It is well known that the Cu-Cr alloys are very difficult to be made by conventional sintering methods. This difficulty originates both from limited solubility of Cr in the Cu matrix and from limited sintering temperature due to high vapor pressures of Cr and Cu components at the high temperature. Densification of Cu-50%Cr Powder compacts by conventional Powder metallurgy Process has been studied. Three kinds of sintering methods were tested in order to obtain high-density sintered compacts. Completely densified Cu-Cr compacts could be obtained neither by solid state sintering method nor by liquid phase sintering method. Both low degree of shrinkage and evolution of large pores in the Cu matrix during the solid state sintering are attributed to the anchoring effect of large Cr particles, which inhibits homogeneous densification of Cu matrix and induces pore generation in the Cu matrix. In addition, the effect of undiffusible gas coming from the reduction of Cu-oxide and Cr-oxide was observed during liquid phase sintering. A two-step sintering method, solid state sintering followed by liquid phase sintering, was proved to have beneficial effect on the fabrication of high-dendsity Cu-Cr sintered compacts. The sintered compacts have properties similar to those of commercial products.
Since the first discovery of carbon nanotube (CNT) in 1991, a window to new technological areas has been opened. One of the emerging applications of CNTs is the reinforcement of composite materials to overcome the performance limits of conventional materials. However, because of the difficulties in distributing CNTs homogeneously in metal or ceramic matrix by means of traditional composite processes, it has been doubted whether CNTs can really reinforce metals or ceramics. In this study, CNT reinforced Cu matrix nanocomposite is fabricated by a novel fabrication process named molecular level mixing process. This process produces CNT/Cu composite powders whereby the CNTs are homogeneously implanted within Cu powders. The CNT/Cu nanocomposite, consolidated by spark plasma sintering of CNT/Cu composite powders, shows to be 3 times higher strength and 2 times higher Young’s modulus than Cu matrix. This extra-ordinary strengthening effect of carbon nanotubes in metal is higher than that of any other reinforcement ever used for metal matrix composites.
The possibility of Cu-Al-Ni intermetallic coating on the mild steel through the combustion synthesis has been investigated. In particular, the effect of the ball milling energy on the microstructure of the coating layer was examined to obtain the best coating condition. Experimental results show that Cu-Al-Ni powder compact was explosively synthesized and successfully coated with the steel matrix. It was revealed that the formation of $Cu_9Al_4$ intermetallic decreased with increase in the ball milling energy. This result supports that the high energy ball milling would be effective for obtaining the most suitable microstructure for Cu-Al-Ni coating layer. However, the excessive ball milling energy seems to decrease the bonding strength between the coating layer and the matrix.
To investigate an effect of phase separation on precipitation characteristics of CuCl nanocrystals in CuCl doped nonlinear optical glasses, borosilicate glass systems with 9 different compositions with ~2wt% of CuCl were selected and CuCl doped glasses were prepared by melting and precipitation method. Microstructural properties of the CuCl doped glasses were analyzed by optical absorption spectroscopy, acid elution test, TEM, and EDXS. While phase separation did not occur in Glass A~D, interconnected and droplet microstructures due to phase separation were found in Glass E, F and Glass G~I, respectively. In the particular composition of the matrix glasses in this study, the precipitation of the CuCl particles was observed in the phase separable glasses, not in phase non-separable glasses. The CuCl particles were precipitated in both silica-rich phase region and boronrich phase region of the glass matrix. In the case of 7.7Na2O-36.6B2O3-52.7SiO2(mole%) glass, the larger CuCl particles than those in the silica-rich phase region were observed in the boron-rich phase region.
Effects of liquid phase and reinforcing particle morphology on the sintering of Al-6 wt%Cu-10 vol% $Al_2O_3$ or SiC particles were studied in regards to densification, structure and transverse rupture properties. The Al-Cu liquid phase penetrated the boundaries between the aluminum matrix powders and the interfaces with reinforcing particles as well, indicating a good wettability to the powders. This enhanced the densification during sintering and the resulting strength and ductility. Since most of the copper added, however, was dissolved in the liquid phase and formed a brittle $CuAl_2$ phase upon cooling rather than alloyed with the aluminum matrix, the strengthening effect by the copper was not fully realized. Reinforcing particles of agglomerate type were found less suitable for the liquid phase sintering than solid type particles. $Al_2O_3$ and SiC particles protluced little difference on the sintering behavior but their size had a large effect. Repressing of the sintered composites increased density and bending properties but caused debonding at the matrix-particle interfaces and also fracturing of the particles.
The effect of heat treating temperature and ${\alpha}$ phase In the ${\beta}$ phase matrix were investigated for ${\beta}-CuZnAl$ shape memory alloys by tension test, fatigue test, and shape memory effect test. After heat treatment at $677^{\circ}C$, $750^{\circ}C$, $800^{\circ}C$ and $850^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. respectively, static fracture stress(${\sigma}_f$), fatigue fracture stress(${\tau}_{max}$) at $10^6$ cycle, and elongation(${\epsilon}_f$) was $24.2kg/mm^2$, $17.21kg/mm^2$ and 11.8%, respectively. As heat treating temperature decreased, fracture surfaces of the specimens were changed from the intergranular to the transgranular fracture mode. Especially, the a phase precipitated in the ${\beta}$ phase matrix had an effect on crack propagation and the fracture surface was characterized by dimple-like pattern when crack propagated in transgranular cracking mode. Precipitation of the ${\alpha}$ phase in the ${\beta}$ phase matrix lowered the transformation temperature by $10^{\circ}C$, and about 2.5 vol.% ${\alpha}$ phase did not affect the shape memory effect examined by the bending test.
This work is to present a new synthesis of metallic glass (MG)/metallic glass (MG) composites using gas atomization and spark plasma sintering (SPS) processes. The MG powders of $Cu_{54}Ni_6Zr_{22}Ti_{18}$ (CuA) and $Ni_{59}Zr_{15}Ti_{13}Nb_7Si_3Sn_2Al_1$(NiA) as atomized consist of fully amorphous phases and present a different thermal behavior; $T_g$ (glass transition temperature) and $T_x$ (crystallization temperature) are 716K and 765K for the Cu base powder, but 836K and 890K for the Ni base ones, respectively. SPS process was used to consolidate the mixture of each amorphous powder, being $CuA/10\%NiA\;and\;NiA/10\%CuA$ in weight. The resultant phases were Cu crystalline dispersed NiA matrix composites as well as NiA phase dispersed CuA matrix composites, depending on the SPS temperatures. Effect of the second phases embedded in the MG matrix was discussed on the micro-structure and mechanical properties.
The effect of Cu content on microstructure and mechanical properties of nano-sized Cu dispersed $Al_2O_3(Al_2O_3/Cu)$ nanocomposites was investigated. The nanocomposites with Cu content of 2.5 to 10 vol% were prepared by reduction and hot-pressing of $Al_2O_3/CuO$ powder mixtures. The nanocomposites with Cu content of 2.5 and 5vol% exhibited the maximum fracture strength of 820MPa and enhanced toughness compared with monolithic $Al_2O_3$. The strengthening was mainly attributed to the refinement of $Al_2O_3$ matrix grains. The toughening mechanism was discussed by the observed microstructural feature based on crack bridging.
In order to investigate the effect of Ge addition to the Cu Matrix on the microstructure and the critical current density, four kinds of internal tin processed Nb$_3$Sn strands with pure Cu and Cu 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 wt% Ge alloy were drawn to 0.8 mm diameter. The microstructure and critical current of internal tin processed Nb$_3$Sn wires that were heat treated at temperatures ranging from 68$0^{\circ}C$ to 74$0^{\circ}C$ for 240 h were investigated. The Ge addition to the matrix did not make workability worse. A Ge rich layer in the Cu-Ge matrix suppressed the growth of the Nb$_3$Sn layer and promoted grain coarsening. The greater the Ge content in the matrix, the lower the net Jc result after Nb$_3$Sn reaction heat treatment. There was no significant variation in Jc observed with heat treatment temperature ranging from 68$0^{\circ}C$ to 74$0^{\circ}C$.
