  • The study on the adsorption, the surface properties and the antibacterial effects of the metal-treated pitch based activated carbon fibers was carried out. From the adsorption studies on the series of metal-treated activated carbon fiber, the specific surface areas of the metal treated activated carbon fiber obtained from BET equation were in the range of 113.2~1574 $m^2$/g for the Ag-ACFs. And that of Cu treated ACF are distributed to 688.2-887.8 $\m^2$/g. And, the specific surface areas of the Ni-treated pitch based ACFs were in the range of 692.6~895.2 $\m^2$/g. From the ${\alpha}_s$- method, 0.06~1.1 cm^3/g of the micropore volumes were obtained from Ag-ACFs. And, 0.1~0.2 cm^3/ and 0.2~0.6 cm^3/g of the micropore volumes were obtained from Cu and Ni-ACFs, respectively. And, from the SEM morphology results, it was observed that the surface of activated carbon fiber are partially blocked and coated by metal after the treatment. Finally, from the antibacterial effects of metal-treated activated carbon fiber against E. coli, the areas of antibacterial effect become larger with the increase in mole ratio of metal treated. And, from the antibacterial effects using Shake flask method against E. coli, the percentage of the effects was 92.5~100 % and the antibacterial effect was increased with the increase in mole concentration of metal treated.

  • The dyeing properties of protein fiber with pine needles colorants were studied through an investigation of the effect of dyeing conditions such as dye concentration, dyeing temperatures and time on dye uptakes, effect of mordants, and color change. In addition, the various colorfastness of dyed silk and wool fabrics were evaluated for practical use. The antimicrobial ability, ultraviolet-cut ability, and deodorant ability were also estimated. The dye uptake increased as the dyeing concentration increased and this enabled the obtainment of the Langmuir absorption isotherm. The dye uptake increased as the dyeing time and temperature increased. Pine needles colorants showed relatively good affinity to protein fiber and produced a yellow color. Post-mordanting was more effective than the pre-mordanting, and the dye uptake of fabrics improved by mordanting. Except for washing, the colorfastness of dyed fabrics showed a low rating. However, the colorfastness to light and the dry cleaning of fabrics mordanted with N.Cu, and the friction fastness of fabrics mordanted with Cu improved. The guide fabrics showed very good antimicrobial abilities of 99.9%; in addition, the ultraviolet-cut ability and deodorant ability improved in fabrics dyed with pine needles extracts.

  • To assign the functionality of the regenerated fiber from waste MDF(wMDF) made of pitch pine, we examined the dyeing characteristics of natural dyes, sappan wood as a polychromatic natural red series, monochromatic gardenia as a yellow series, and indigo blue series. For nonemordanting dye, the colors of regenerated fiber dyed by sappan wood and gardenia were reddish yellow (YR) and yellow (Y) series, respectively, and dyeing conditions were appropriate a 30 ~ 50 g/L of dyeing materials at 60 ℃ for 60minutes of dyeing time. We obtained regenerated woody dyed fibers (Re-WDF), YR to the red (R) series by premordanting with Al and Cu mordant for sappan wood and the purplish red (RP) series by Fe premordanting. In the case of gardenia, only Y series colors were developed in nonemordanting dye or all three mordants. Indigo dye produced Re-WDF with greenish yellow (GY) tone at 1%, green (G) tone at 3%, and blue (B) tone at 5% concentration or more. Re-WDF with indigo showed the best light fastness followed by sappan wood and gardenia. In particular, the light fastness of Re-WDF with gardenia was very poor. The light fastness was somewhat improved by premordanting(Fe>Cu>Al) both sappan wood and gardenia dyes.

  • This study was intended to research the dyeing with natural walnut hull extracts over cotton, flax, rayon, wool, nylon and silk. We studied the dyeing conditions and mordant effect, and observed dyeability. The result are as follows: 1. In the dyeability with natural walnut hull extracts, protein and polyamide fiber has more dye uptake rather than cellulose fiber. 2. The optimum condition in the dyeing with natural walnut hull extracts was at $90^{\circ}C$, 12%(o.w.b) concentration in 90 mins. 3. In the case of the dyeability by repeated dyeing number, the dyeability of good dyeability fiber is improved in the first or second dyeing, but that of bad dyebality fiber is improved when it is dyed more repeatedly. 4. In the dyeablity treated with mordants, Al, Sn, and Mg don't have any differences, but Cu and Fe have some difference. The color of Fe mordant is green and the color of Cu mordant is blue. 5. In the case of the color fastness with mordant treatment, nylon is better than silk and wool in color fastness to washing but silk is better than nylon and wool in color fastness to light.

  • This study investigated the properties and functions of wool and silk dyed with Catechu by examining the effects of dying conditions such as dye concentration, dying temperature, dyeing time, pH level and pre-mordants. These conditions were examined in relation to dye uptake and color changes, washing fastness, light fastness, ultraviolet-cut ability and antimicrobial ability of the dyed fabrics. Catechu showed good affinity to silk fiber. Langmuir adsorption isotherm was obtained, and so it was considered that ionic bondings are formed between Catechu and protein fiber. As the dyeing time and temperature is increased, the dyeability of both silk and wool fabrics also increases. At high temperatures the color of dyed fabrics changes from Y and YR to R. Wool is effective in using Al, Cu, Fe mordant, while silk is effective only in using only Cu mordants. The dyeability was shown to be improved at low pH levels. Additionally, both washing fastness and light fastness were shown to be low. However, the fabric color gradually changed to red was due to mailard reaction of catechol tannin causingby repeated washing and sunlight. The ultraviolet-cut ability was improved for cotton fabric dyed with Catechu. Also, dyed fabric with Catechu showed very good antimicrobial abilities at 99.9%.

  • Based on the sheath-core bicomponent composite fibers with modified polystyrene (PS) and the modified polypropylene (PP), composite fibers obtained were further cross-linked and sulphonated with chlorosulphonic acid to produce strong acidic cation ion exchange fibers. The structures of the fibers obtained were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) etc. The optimal technology of the fibers obtained is discussed. The static absorption capacity of the sheath-core bicomponent composite cation exchange fibers for $Zn^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$ was determined. The absorption kinetics and major factors affecting the absorption capacities of $Zn^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$ were studied, and its chemical stability and regenerating properties were probed. The results suggest that cation exchange fibers with better mechanical properties and higher exchange capability were obtained. Moreover, this type of ion exchange fiber has good absorption properties and working stability to various metal ions. Hence, they have higher practicability.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the stability of archival documents produced using papers. The properties of archival documents depend on the type of fillers of papers that are used such as fiber, non cellulose fiber, and mineral. The physio-chemical characteristics of archival documents were analyzed by employing acid hydrolysis against cellulose fiber substances. Fibers of Korean hand-made (Hanji), flex, and cotten papers showed higher pH and the degree of polymerization (DP) than wood fiber and mechanical fiber. Mechanical pulp containing 12.8% of lignin showed the greatest decrease of DP due to acid hydrolysis, and this resulted in increase of degree of aging. The filler found to clay and talc did not contain metal such as $Fe^{+2}$, $Fe^{+3}$, and $Cu^{+2}$. The alkaline metals such as Mg, Ca, and Ti showed greater resistance to acid hydrolysis.

  • Copper alloy metal fiber was incorporated into the conventional water-soluble metal working fluids to increase the antimicrobial activity. Fluid treated by copper alloy metal fiber is shown that bacteria is disappeared whereas that untreated metal fiber is increased bacteria as increasing the life time. When the electrochemical potential of Cu/Zn ion is -268mV, radicals with molecular oxygen are easily made. Especially, hydroperoxide radical shows strong toxicity to the strains, leading to the conformational change of plasma membrane. As a result antimicrobial activity of copper alloy metal fiber in metal working fluid is superior to that of copper fiber.

  • This study is focused on the possibility of copper alloy metal fiber for an antimicrobial activity in the water soluble metal working fluids. Electrochemical potential of Cu/Zn ion is -268mV, and easily makes radicals with molecular oxygen. Especially, hydroperoxide radical shows strong toxicity to the strains. Plasma membrane causes conformational change when hydroperoxide radical binds to plasma membrane. Elution of copper ion from copper alloy metal fiber is detected in metal working fluid. As a result antimicrobial activity of copper alloy metal fiber in metal working fluid is superior to that of copper fiber.
