  • Copper fine particles, ranging from $0.11{\mu}m$ to $0.64{\mu}m$ in average size, were prepared by a chemical reduction method using hydrazine ($N_2H_4$) as a reduction agent in waste copper solutions. The effect of the amount of hydrazine addition was investigated on the properties of the obtained powders. Also, the effect of the addition of dispersing agents [Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)] during particle synthesis was studied. The powders, obtained from 1 M waste copper solutions, showed the mixtures of Cu and $Cu_2O$ crystals at low hydrazine addition amounts of 0.8 mol and 1.0 mol, while those exhibited pure Cu crystals at adequate hydrazine addition amount of 0.12 mol. The average size of the Cu powders decreased with increasing the concentrations of hydrazine and dispersing agents. The addition of PVA to the solutions as a dispersing agent was more effective than that of PVP in preventing the aggregation of particles.

  • In order to study effects of Cu and Be on the microstructure and tensile properties of rapidly solidified Al-Mg alloys, Al-Mg-Cu-Be alloys have been rapidly solidified by inert gas atomization process. Microstructure of rapidly solidified Al-Mg-Cu-Be powders exhibited refinement and good dispersion of Be particles as increasing of solidification rate. Solidification rate of atomized powders was estimated to be about $5{\times}10^{3{\circ}}C/s$. Inert gas atomized Al-Mg-Cu-Be powders were hot-processed by vacuum hot pressing at $450^{\circ}C$ under 100 MPa and hot extruded with reduction ratio in area of 25: 1 at $450^{\circ}C$. The extruded Al-Mg-Cu-Be powders consisted of recrystallized fine Al grains and homogeneously dispersed fine Be particles, and exhibited improved tensile properties with increase in Cu content. $Al_2CuMg$ compounds precipitated in grain and grain boundaries of Al-Mg-Cu-Be alloys with aging heat treatment after solution treatment. Hardness and tensile properties were improved by increasing Cu content and Be addition. Compared with extruded Al-Mg-Cu powders, the extruded Al-Mg-Cu-Be powders exhibited finer recrystallized grains and improved tensile properties by dispersion hardening of Be and subgrain boundaries pinned by fine Be particles. After aging treatment, hardness and tensile properties were improved due to restricted precipitation by increasing of dislocation density around Be particles in matrix.

  • To investigate the characteristics of elemental components of atmospheric particles in Cheonan, atmospheric particles were sampled using a high volume air sampler equipped with a 5-stage cascade impactor during 2006. 16 elemental concentrations in fine and coarse particles were determined using ICP-AES and ICP-MS. The total mass concentrations of fine and coarse particles were 33.23 and $20.66{\mu}g/m3$, respectively, and the total elemental concentrations were 1.27, $1.71{\mu}g/m3$, occupying 3.8 and 8.3% of the total mass. Fe, Al, Ti were the most abundant elements in both fine and coarse particles, and the total Pb concentration was 84.55ng/m3, below the National standard. Enrichment factor for Sc, Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Sn, Pb in fine particles were above 1,000. This indicates that the elements in fine particles are mainly from the anthropogenic sources including automobiles.

  • Samples of fine particle $(d_P<2.5 \mum)$ were taken in Chongju area using a dichotomous sampler. The data set was collected on fifty-eight different days with 24 hour sampling period from October 27, 1995 through August 25, 1996. The samples were analyzed using a proton induced x-ray emission (PIXE) for Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, M, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br and Pb. Values of Fe, Ca, Si, Cu, K and Cl exhibit marked seasonal variations. Mean concentrations for this study had the following order S > Cl > Si > K > Al > Fe on fine particle. Concentrations of Ca, Si and Fe were higher during the spring season compared with any other season. These phenomena may be attributable to soil dust. Cl and K were higher in the winter, which may be explained by combustion of fossil fuel. Higher values for Cu and Zn in the Winter may be due to the combustion and incineration.

  • The effects of Si addition on the precipitation processes of in Al-Cu-Si alloy films were studied by the transmission electron microscopy. Deposition of an Al-1.5Cu-1.5Si (wt. %) film at $305^{\circ}C$ resulted in formation of fine, uniformly distributed spherical $\theta$-phase particles due to the precipitation of the $\theta$ and Si phase particles during deposition. For deposition at $435^{\circ}C$, fine $\theta$-phase particles precipitated during wafer cooldown, while coarse Si nodules formed at the sublayer interface during deposition. The film susceptibility to corrosion is discussed in relation to the film microstructure and deposition temperature.

  • With the aim of using a filler material in a conductive paste, fine Cu nanoparticles were synthesized through the high-speed chemical reaction between cuprous oxide ($Cu_2O$) powder and sulfuric acid in distilled water. Under external temperature of $7^{\circ}C$, sulfuric acid concentration of 48%, and $Cu_2O$ amount of 30 g, the $Cu_2O$ particles were eliminated and slightly aggregated Cu nanoparticles were synthesized. Futhermore, Cu nanoparticles of 224 nm, in which the aggregation between particles was obviousiy much suppressed, were synthesized with the choice of an additive. In the particle sample, occasionally there are coarse particles formed by the aggregation of fine nanoparticles and weak linkages between the nanoparticles. However, the coarse particles were destroyed and the linkages were broken after mixing with a resin formulation, indicating the behavior of untangling the aggregation between nanoparticles.

  • This study has been carried out to determine the seasonal characteristics of concentration of various ionic (CI-, NO3-, SO42-, Na+, NH+, K+, Ca2+) and heavy metallic (Pb, Mn, Cu, Ni) species in Pusan from August 1997 to April 1998. The concentrations of CI-, Na+, K+ were higher during summer with 2.98 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/㎥. Seasonal variation of total concentration of but the concentration of NH4+ was higher during winter with 2.46${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/㎥. Seasonal variation of total concentration of heavy metals(Pb, Cu, Mn, Ni) were 186.0 ng/㎥ in summer, 222.6 ng/㎥ in autumn, and 135.83 ng/㎥ in winter. Over the seasons inspected, the concentration of Mn was higher in coarse particles than fine particles and concentration of Ni was higher in fine particles than coarse particles. during yellow sand period, the concentration of TSP was increased about two times than that of other period. SO42-, Ca2+ concentrations were higher than other ionic components because of soil particles. The concentration of Ni showed 94.62ng/㎥ was increased about 4~5 times than other period. Principal component of the yellow sand, SO42-, Ca2+ could be discreased by rainfall and washout effect of atmospheric aerosol was higher in coarse particles than fine particles. Results from PCA(principal component analysis) showed that major pollutant was NaCl by seasalt particulate and (NH4)2SO4.

  • In order to prepare the uniform copper particles from copper sulfate solution by using hydrazine as a reduction agents, the reduction behavior of copper particles from copper sulfate was investigated in detail at room temperature by the observation of reaction products. The effects of $NH_4$OH and $Na_4$$P_2$$O_{7}$ on the formation of uniform copper particles were discussed. ($NHCu_3$)$_4$$SO_4$was completely formed at over pH 11 by adding $NH_4$OH in copper sulfate solution. The fine $Cu_2$O with the particle size of 50 nm was produced in the initial reduction process of (NH$Cu_3$)$_4$$SO_4$solution with $Na_4$$P_2$$O_{ 7}$ and then the Cu$_2$O was converted into copper particles by inserting additional hydrazine. When Cu(NH$_3$)$_4$SO$_4$solution with $Na_4$$P_2$$O_{ 7}$ was reduced at $80^{\circ}C$ by hydrazine, the highly dispersed copper particles with the particle size of about 0.8 $\mu\textrm{m}$ was obtained.

  • Ultra-fine Copper particles for a conductive paste in electric-electronic field were prepared using wet-reduction process with hydrazine hydrate ($N_{2}H_4{\cdot}H_{2}O$) as a reductor. The effect of reaction conditions such as the amount of dispersion ($Na_{4}O_{7}P_2{\cdot}10H_{2}O$) and reductor ($N_{2}H_4{\cdot}H_{2}O$) on the particle size and shape for the prepared Cu powders was investigated. The quantity of dispersion and reductor varied from 0 to 0.0025 M and from 5 to 40 ml at a reaction temperature of $70^{\circ}C$, respectively. The particle size, shape, and structure for the obtained Cu particles were characterized by means of XRD, SEM, TEM, EDS and TGA. The aggregation of Cu particles was reduced with relatively increasing of the amount of dispersion at fixed other reaction conditions. The smaller Cu particle with size of approximately 300nm was obtained from 0.032 M $CuSO_4$ with adding of 0.0025 M $Na_{4}O7P_2{\cdot}10H_{2}O$ and 40ml $N_{2}H_4{\cdot}H_{2}O$ at a reaction temperature of $70^{\circ}C$.

  • Recent epidemiologic studies revealed that the concentration of air pollutants and fine particulated matter have some effects on health status and are associated with increased mortality and morbidity. The purpose of this study was to characterize background mass concentration of fine particle (PM2.5) and metallic composition from September 2001 to August 2002 in comparison with a medium city, Asan and metropolitan city, Seoul. Conclusively, proper management for fine particles was required in a medium city, Asan, considering the concentrations of metallic elements in fine particles in Asan were relatively higher than those in Seoul. The results were as followed. 1. Average mass concentrations of fine particles in Asan and Seoul were 37.70(${\pm}18.41{\;}{\mu}g/\textrm{m}^3$) and 5.83(${\pm}38.50$) ${\mu}g/\textrm{m}^3$, respectively. When the weather conditions were classified as normal and yellow-sand, measured average mass concentrations of fine particles in yellow-sand weather condition was significantly higher than those of normal weather condition in both cities (p<0.05). 2. Depending on seasons, measured average mass concentrations of fine particles in Asan and Seoul in spring were 47.76(${\pm}19.07$) ${\mu}g/\textrm{m}^3$m and 61.53 (${\pm}4.37$) ${\mu}g/\textrm{m}^3$, respectively. In summer, the average mass concentrations of fine particles in Asan and Seoul were 29.44(${\pm}9.85$) ${\mu}g/\textrm{m}^3$ and 25.42(${\pm}8.10$) ${\mu}g/\textrm{m}^3$, respectively. Especially, the concentration was the highest in spring and the lowest in summer among four seasons. 3. Average concentrations of manganese(Mn), iron(Fe), chromium(Cr), cadmium(Cd), lead(Pb) and silicon(Si) in fine particles in Asan were significantly higher in Seoul (p<0.05). Average concentration of Si in fine particle in Asan was statistically higher than that of Seoul during yellow -sand condition (p<0.05). 4. Considering the characterization of four seasons, average Pb concentration of fine particle in Asan is significantly higher than that of Seoul in spring(p<0.01). In summer, average Mn and Cr concentrations of fine particle in Asan is higher than those of Seoul (p<0.05). Average Mn, Fe. Cr and Si concentrations in fall (p<0.05), and average Mn, Fe, Cr, Pb, and Si concentrations in winter (p<0.05) in Asan were higher than those of Seoul, respectively. 5. Mass concentrations of each Mn, Fe, Cd and Si in fine particles were significantly correlated with both cities. In normal weather condition, Mn, Cu and Si concentrations are statistically significant in Asan, while Mn, Fe, Cu and Si concentrations are statistically significant in Seoul. Mn, Fe and Si concentrations in both cities were statistically significant during yellow-sand weather.
