The correlation was investigated between the observed heat of ligation and calculated bond energy for square planar and octahedral Cu(II) complexes by EHMO (Extended Huckel Molecular Orbital) method. It was found that net charge of $Cu^{2+}$ ion of both square planar $[Cu(H_2O)_{4-x}(NH_3)_x]^{2+}$(X = 0, 1, 2,${\ldots}$4) and octahedral $[Cu(H_2O)_{6-x}(NH_3)_x]^{2+}$complexes (X = 0, 1, 2,${\ldots}$6) is decreased with substituting $NH_3$ for $H_2O$ molecule. It was found that a good relationship exists between the observed heat of ligation and the calculated bond energy. From this fact, we can obtain a linear equation ${\Delta}H$ = 0.1194$E_{diss}$ + 0.4718, theoretical equation.
Soil samples collected from paddy field adjacent to zinc-mining sites were sequentially extracted to assess chemical fractions of Cd, Zn, Cu and Pb. The purpose of this study was two fold; (i) to examine the chemical forms of heavy metal in soils by sequential extraction. and (ii) to determine relationships between the chemical distribution of heavy metal in the soil and the heavy metal content of the brown rice. The results are summarized as follows. The content of exchangeable, organically bound and carbonate Cd and residual Zn was 73.9% and 63.8% of total Cd and Zn in the soil, respectively. The content of exchangeable Cd, Zn and Pb in soil showed highly negative correlations with pH, organically bound Cd, carbonate Cd, sulfide Cd, Zn and Pb in soil showed highly positive correlations with pH. The content of organically bound Cd, Zn, Pb and carbonate Cu in soil showed highly positive correlations with organic matter content, while the content of sulfide Cu and residual Cd in soil showed highly negative correlation with organic matter content. The content of carbonate Cd, Zn, Pb and residual Cu in soil showed highly positive correlations with CEC, but the content of exchangeable Cd, Zn, Cu, Pb and organically bound Cu in soil showed highly negative correlations with CEC. The content of total, organically bound, carbonate, sulfide and residual Cd in soil were highly correlated with that of Cd in brown rice. The content of any Pb fractions in soil were not correlated with that of Pb in brown rice. The content of water soluble and exchangeable Zn in soil were highly correlated with that of Zn in brown rice.
This experiment was conducted to investigate heavy metal speciation and bioavailability from soil to the edible parts of water dropwort near industrial complex. The soils and water dropwort were collected from the paddies cultivating water dropwort(10 sites), stream sediments(5 sites), and background soils(3 sites) near industrial complex. The total concentrations of Cd Cu, and Ni were higher than those of permissible level for soil contamination(Cd 3, Cu 100, Ni $50mg\;kg^{-1}$ in soil) suggested by Kloke(1979). Dominant chemical forms of Cd in paddies cultivating water dropwort and stream sediments were exchangeable form(49.1-56.3%), and those of Cu, Zn, and Ni were Fe and Mn oxide bound and residual forms. The mobility factor of heavy metals in paddies cultivating water dropwort and stream sediments was in the order Cd>Zn>Ni>Cu>Pb, specially, the mobility factor of Cd (62-72%) were relatively higher than that of other metals in soils. The total concentrations of Cd in soils showed significant positive correlation with the ratios of exchangeable and Fe and Mn oxide bound forms, while correlated negatively with residual form. Heavy metal contents in root parts were higher than those in top parts of water dropwort. The bioavailability of water dropwort varied considerably between the different parts and heavy metals. Cd, Cu and Ni contents in water dropwort were correlated with each fractions in soils. Specially, the exchangeable form of Cd and Ni in soils showed significant positive correlation with the those contents of water dropwort.

An investigation of the interaction of Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) and Ag(I) with two N,N'-dibenzylated nitrogen-oxygen mixed donor macrocyclic ligands, has been carried out. Tle log K values for the respective complexes in 95% methanol have been determined potentiometrically. Both ligands have formed stable complex with only Cu(II) and Ag(I) ion. Transport measurements in a bulk liquid membrane system exhibited a very high selectivity of Ag(I) ion over the other metal ions used.
Ti-Cu-N and Ti-Ag-N nanocomposite films with various copper and silver contents were synthesized by arc ion plating and magnetron sputtering hybrid system. The structure and mechanical properties of these films were found to be dependant on the copper and silver concentration. The maximum hardness of Ti-Cu-N and Ti-Ag-N films showed approximately 40 ㎬ below 2 at%Me. The role of soft metallic phase in Ti-Me-N nanosturctured films containing one hard and one soft phase is also discussed.
The crystallographic site dependent substitution of $^{18}O$ for $^{16}O$ in $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Ca_{0.8}Y_{0.2}Cu_{2}^{16}O_{8+\delta}$ has heen investigated. In the Kaman spectra of $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Ca_{0.8}Y_{0.2}Cu_{2}^{16}O_{8+\delta}$ three prominent Raman bands are observed at 297. 464, and $623cm^{-1}$. As the $^{16}O$ arc replaced hy $^{18}O$, all the three bands shift to lower wavewnumbers. The rate of this isotopic shift is similar for the hands at 397 and $464cm^{-1}$. whereas it is quite slower for the hand at $623cm^{-1}$ '['his implys that the $^{16}O-^{18}O$ exchange reaction is crystallographic sites dependent. .Assuming a tetragonal symmetry, we assign the bands at 623. 464, and $297cm^{-1}$ to the vibrations of $O_{pl}(A_{g}),\;O_{ap}\;and\;O_{Bi}$ respectively.

The bentonite, a buffer material, is essential for the deep geological disposal of HLW (high-level radioactive waste), and it is important to know its characteristic long-term evolution in the underground environment. With an assumption that the concentration of aqueous copper ions will increase if copper-coated materials on a metal canister are corroded, we examined some characteristic ion-exchanges and cation release phenomena occurring in the bentonite clay (montmorillonite) interacted with aqueous Cu cations. During the interaction between dissolved copper and bentonite, Na rather than Ca cations in the expandable clay were preferentially replaced by Cu ions in the experiment. In addition, the Cu-exchanged montmorillonite was characterized by an asymmetric X-ray diffracted pattern with relatively collapsed interlayers compared to the raw sample. These results indicate that the gradual change of the original bentonite property may occur in a underground disposal condition. We are going to further study the characteristic chemical and mineralogical changes of the bentonite buffer to be used for the disposal site by conducting additional experiments.
Fe-based powders, Fe-M(M=Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn), were prepared in Ar gas by mechanical alloying and their crystallographic and magnetic properties were investigated. X-ray diffraction indicates that the cubic lattice parameter increases for the M substitution. The distance of closest approach around M can explained the increase of lattice constant in Fe-M powders. $M\"{o}ssbauer$ spectroscopy measurements on Fe-M samples indicates the coexistence of ferromagnetic phases and paramagnetic phase that are created by the distribution of local environment M on Fe atom. On the other hand, The spread of line-width on $M\"{o}ssbauer$ spectra can be explained by the distribution of hyperfine magnetic fields. The results of quadrupole shift and isomer shift revealed that M substitutions in Fe-M powders didn't change both structure and the local charge distribution around Fe atom severely.
