  • Aircrews and passengers are exposed to radiation from cosmic rays and secondary scattered rays generated by reactions with air or aircraft. For aircrews, radiation safety management is based on the exposure dose calculated using a space-weather environment simulation. However, the exposure dose varies depending on solar activity, altitude, flight path, etc., so measuring by route is more suggestive than the calculation. In this study, we developed an instrument to measure the cosmic radiation dose using a general-purpose Si sensor and a multichannel analyzer. The dose calculation applied the algorithm of CRaTER (Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation), a space radiation measuring device of NASA. Energy and dose calibration was performed with Cs-137 662 keV gamma rays at a standard calibration facility, and good dose rate dependence was confirmed in the experimental range. Using the instrument, the dose was directly measured on the international line between Dubai and Incheon in May 2023, and it was similar to the result calculated by KREAM (Korean Radiation Exposure Assessment Model for Aviation Route Dose) within 12%. It was confirmed that the dose increased as the altitude and latitude increased, consistent with the calculation results by KREAM. Some limitations require more verification experiments. However, we confirmed it has sufficient utilization potential as a cost-effective measuring instrument for monitoring exposure dose inside or on personal aircraft.

  • The individual dose equivalent, $H_p$, effective dose, E, and gender specific effective dose, $E^m$ and E$^f$, were evaluated using the male and female phantoms of MIRD type located in the radial gamma radiation field near a point source. The point sources were placed at the distances of 15, 40 and 100 cm in front of the body at different heights. Two radionuclides, $^{137}Cs$ and $^{131}I$, were selected for the illustrative examples. In terms of the gender specific effective doses, $E^f$ is higher than $E^m$ with a few exceptions, e.g. the case where the point source is at the height of reproductive organs, but the differences from the sex- averaged values are not significant enough to justify use of gender specific dose conversion factors for the radial gamma field. The ratios $H_p$/E were in the range of 1 to 3 depending on the source and dosimeter positions when the dosimeter is worn on the front surface of the torso covering from chest to lower abdomen, but varied from 0.34 to 6.5 in extreme cases. When it is assumed that the typical handling procedure of radioactive source material and the typical dosimeter position(on the chest) be respected, the dosimeters calibrated against the broad parallel field appear to provide estimates with acceptable errors for the effective dose of workers exposed to radial broad gamma field around a point source.

  • Gamma irradiation (${\gamma}IR$) is widely used for radiotherapy as a treatment of cancer cells although it has a risk to damage normal cells. Inflammation is regarded as one of side effects of ${\gamma}IR$ while the effect of low dose of ${\gamma}IR$ on inflammation has not been researched well. Here, we investigated the inflammatory responses of low dose of ${\gamma}IR$ on murine spleen cells. It was evaluated if ${\gamma}IR$ affected the mitogen-induced lymphocyte proliferation, the regulation of various inflammatory cytokines (IFN-${\gamma}$, IL-2, IL-17, IL-4, IL-10), and the involvement of Ikaros and MAPK/NF-${\kappa}B$ medicated mechanism. Exposure of $^{137}Cs-{\gamma}IR$ below 2 Gy decreased the lymphocytes proliferative response to mitogens (LPS, ConA) except at the lowest dose, 0.05 Gy. IL-17, IL-2 and IL-4 mRNA increased at 0.5 and 2 Gy, but not altered at 0.05 Gy. IL-10, anti-inflammatory cytokine, increased only at 0.05 Gy. In regard to intracellular signaling, p-JNK, p-p38 and p-$I{\kappa}B{\alpha}$ were not changed, whereas the activation of ERK and Ikaros increased at the lowest dose. These results suggest that exposure of ${\gamma}IR$ less than 0.5 Gy (or below 0.05 Gy) has beneficial effects as a radiation hormesis on immune function.

  • The flow rate measurements in a multi-phase flow pipeline were evaluated quantitatively by means of a clamp-on sealed radioisotope based on a cross correlation signal processing technique. The flow rates were calculated by a determination of the transit time between two sealed gamma sources by using a cross correlation function following FFT filtering, then corrected with vapor fraction in the pipeline which was measured by the ${\gamma}$-ray attenuation method. The pipeline model was manufactured by acrylic resin(ID. 8 cm, L=3.5 m, t=10 mm), and the multi-phase flow patterns were realized by an injection of compressed $N_2$ gas. Two sealed gamma sources of $^{137}Cs$ (E=0.662 MeV, ${\Gamma}$ $factor=0.326\;R{\cdot}h^{-1}{\cdot}m^2{\cdot}Ci^{-1}$) of 20 mCi and 17 mCi, and radiation detectors of $2"{\times}2"$ NaI(Tl) scintillation counter (Eberline, SP-3) were used for this study. Under the given conditions(the distance between two sources: 4D(D; inner diameter), N/S ratio: $0.12{\sim}0.15$, sampling time ${\Delta}t$: 4msec), the measured flow rates showed the maximum. relative error of 1.7 % when compared to the real ones through the vapor content corrections($6.1\;%{\sim}9.2\;%$). From a subsequent experiment, it was proven that the closer the distance between the two sealed sources is, the more precise the measured flow rates are. Provided additional studies related to the selection of radioisotopes their activity, and an optimization of the experimental geometry are carried out, it is anticipated that a radioisotope application for flow rate measurements can be used as an important tool for monitoring multi-phase facilities belonging to petrochemical and refinery industries and contributes economically in the light of maintenance and control of them.

  • In order to establish a testing system for personnel dosimetry performance, the radiation fields from photons, beta particles and neutrons are required, in recent, Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety(KINS) established the reference radation fields except neutrons and tested a variety of their properties. As a result of the test, the reference beams were shown to meet satisfactorily not only the standards of the International Organization for Standardization(ISO), but also the standard levels of the developed countries which are intercomparable with the international traceability. This paper describes the reference beam of gamma radiation. The self-designed and established reference radiation fields were investigated and analyzed by ISO and other international standards. The secondary photon contribution and the beam uniformity of the gamma radiation field were measured and evaluated to fulfill those requirements suggested by the ISO-4037. The measured air kerma rate for the $^{137}$Cs and $^{60}$Co gamma fields was 0.1891 $\sim$ 23.4967 $\mu$Gy/s sand 0.5844 $\sim$ 15.9954 $\mu$Gy/s respectively. The uncertainty with 95 % confidence level of the measured air kerma rate was determined to be less than 2.5 % which is comparable to the international reference gamma radiation fields. It was found that the evaluated air kerma calibration factors of Exradin ionization chamber were in good agreement within 0.9 % and 0.03 % with those given by PTB and NIST, respectively. The gamma radiation fields installed at KINS can maintain traceability systems in Korea, Germany and United State.

  • Prototype double-scattering Compton camera, which consists of three gamma-ray detectors, that is, two double-sided silicon strip detectors (DSSDs) as scatterer detectors and a NaI(Tl) scintillation detector as an absorber detector, could provide high imaging resolution with a compact system. In the present study, the energy resolution and the timing resolution of component detectors were measured, and the parameters affecting the energy resolution of the DSSD were examined in terms of equivalent noise charge (ENC). The energy resolutions of the DSSD-1 and DSSD-2 were, in average, $25.2keV{\pm}0.8keV$ FWHM and $31.8keV{\pm}4.6keV$ FWHM at the 59.5 keV peak of $^{241}Am$, respectively. The timing resolutions of the DSSD and NaI(Tl) scintillation detector were 57.25 ns FWHM and 7.98 ns FWHM, respectively. In addition, the Compton image was obtained for a point-like $^{137}Cs$ gamma source with double-scattering Compton camera. From the present experiment, the imaging resolution of 8.4 mm FWHM (angular resolution of $8.1^{\circ}$ FWHM), and the imaging sensitivity of $1.5{\times}10^{-7}$ (intrinsic efficiency of $1.9{\times}10^{-6}$) were obtained.

  • In the natural, there exist several kinds of radioactive isotopes. From atmospheric weapon tests and then some isotopes are naturally radioactivity above all things, nuclear power plant operation and man-made radioactive isotopes concern steadily growing in the environment. During the fission process of nuclear weapon tests and nuclear power plant operation, more than 200 radioactive isotopes are generated. Among them, $^{90}Sr$ and $^{137}Cs$ has been regarded as very important isotopes due to characteristics. In this paper, a quantitative analysis method of environment low level $^{90}Sr$ is studied. Radioactivity level of the environmental $^{90}Sr$ is very low, and it emits continuous beta spectrum, and $^{90}Sr$ exists together with $^{89}Sr$, $^{90}Y$ and other radioactive isotopes. It very difficult to make the quantitative analysis of $^{90}Sr$. For the analysis of low level radioactive strontium, enrich and chemical separation of strontium from the other radioactive isotopes are needed. For the estimation of strontium recovery ratio, so called SGAT(Strontium Gravimetric Analysis Technique) was generally used among the domestic research groups, and chemical procedures were developed appropriation for the SGAT, Recently, by using ICP(Inductively Coupled atomic Plasma emission spectrophotometer), amounts of stable atoms can be measured easily and accurately to the extend of ppm or ppb. In this paper, new chemical procedures are developed to exploits the ICP technique. New developed method has simpler chemical treatment procedures and then it gives more accurate results compared with the traditional SGAT.

  • Pregnant ICR mice were treated with 137Cs gamma-ray / ultrasound on day 8 of gestation. In combined treatments, pregnant mice were treated with both 1.5 Gy of radiation and $1.0W/cm^2$ ultrasound at time intervals of -1, 0, 1, 3 and 6 hours. The mortalities and external malformations were investigated on day 18 of gestation. The threshold dose of mortality induced by radiation on day 8 of gestation was between 0.5 and 1.0 Gy, and that which was induced by ultrasound was between 1.0 and $1.5W/cm^2$. The mortalities in the late-stage of gestation induced by combined treatment with radiation and ultrasound increased synergistically. The threshold dose of exencephaly and anophthalmia induced by radiation were between 0.5 and 1.0 Gy and between 1.0 and 1.5 Gy, respectively. Those of exencephaly and anophthalmia induced by ultrasound were between 1.0 and $1.5W/cm^2$ and more than $1.5W/cm^2$, respectively. In combined treatments, the incidence of exencephaly and anophthalmia were found to increase synergistically. In the mice treated with both agents at a time interval of one hour, the incidence of exencephaly and anophthalmia reached maximum levels.

  • he scintillation detector having $BaF^2$ crystal with 3.6cm dia${\times}$2.0 cm thick was provided. The energy and timing characteristics were measured and compared with NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors, which widely used in unclear medicine. In order to measure the energy spectrum, the radioactive sources used were $^{22}Na,\;^{54}Mn,\;^{57}Co,\;^{137}Cs$ and the source to detector distance was 7cm. For the timing characteristic, NaI(Tl)(1" ${\times}$ 1")-$BaF^2$ and NaI(Tl)(3" ${\times}$ 3")-$BaF^2$ timing coincidence systems were prepared and the used source was $^{22}Na$ emitting 511keV annihilation photons. For the 511keV gamma-ray emitted from $^{22}Na$, It was revealed that the timing response of the $BaF^2$ detector was faster than NaI(Tl)(1" ${\times}$ 1") and NaI(Tl)(3" ${\times}$ 3") detector used in this experimental investigation. The energy characteristics of the $BaF^2$ detector had a good values for about 500keV energy range.

  • This study was conducted to develop a method for depth assessment of embedded sources using gamma-spectrum ratio and for the evaluation of field applicability. To this end, Peak to Compton and Peak to valley ratio changes were evaluated according to 137Cs, 60Co, 152Eu point source depth using HPGe detector and MCNP simulation. The effects of measurement distance of PTV and PTC methods were evaluated. Using the results, the source depth assessment equation using the PTC and PTV methods was derived based on the detection distance of 50 cm. In addition, the sensitivity of detection distance changes was assessed when using PTV and PTC methods, and error increased by 3 to 4 cm when detection distance decreased by 20 cm based on 50 cm. However, it was confirmed that if the detection distance was increased to 100 cm, the effects of detection distance were small. And PTV and PTC methods were compared with the two distance measurement method which evaluates the depth of source by the change of net peak counting rate according to the detection distance. As a result of source depth assessment, the PTV and PTC showed a maximum error of 1.87 cm and the two distance measurement method showed maximum error of 2.69 cm. The results of the experiment confirmed that the accuracy of the PTV and PTC methods was higher than two distance measurement. In addition, Sensitivity evaluation by horizontal position error of source has maximum error of less than 25.59 cm for the two distance measurement method. On the other hand, PTV and PTC method showed high accuracy with maximum error of less than 8.04 cm. In addition, the PTC method has lowest standard deviation for the same time measurement, which is expected to enable rapid measurement.
