  • An electric field was applied to a conductive layer to induce Joule heating in order to carry out the crystallization of amorphous silicon. Polycrystalline silicon was produced through a solid state transformation within the range of a millisecond. Uniformly distributed grains were obtained due to enormously high heating rate.

  • In T-mixer crystallization, supersaturation is generated by mixing of another solvent or non-solvent in order to reduce the solubility of the compound. Also, T-mixer is a type of continuous crystallization. In order to induce micro-mixing, two solutions were mixed rapidly by T-mixer, which formed high supersaturation. As the results, mean size of HMX crystals decreased with increasing de-supersaturation rate $(R_s)$. Eventually, HMX particles ranging from 0.5 to $5{\mu}m$ can be obtained by T-mixer crystallization. Mixing efficiency in T-mixer increased with increasing $R_s$ values. In T-mixer crystallization without surfactants, homogeneous nucleation was formed when S and $R_s$ was over 54 and $1.6{\times}10^3/sec$. In T-mixer crystallization with surfactants, homogeneous nucleation was formed when S and $R_s$ was over 26 and 7.4/sec.

  • Composition changes of swine manure and the effects on MAP ($MgNH_4PO_46H_2O$) crystallization by microwave irradiation were examined. The concentration of ${PO_4}^{3-}$ was increased within a fixed period of time and then decreased, but $NH_4$-N was reduced continuously during microwave irradiation. Concentration of ${PO_4}^{3-}$ was started to reduce just from the point of foam formation during microwave irradiation, and the temperature at that time was always $49^{\circ}C$ irrespectively to microwave irradiation rate. Inorganic carbon was reduced with microwave irradiation, but soluble organic carbon (TOCs) was increased proportionally. Crystallization rate under conditions of non-microwave irradiation, irradiation up to $93^{\circ}C$ and $48^{\circ}C$ was 87.8%, 87.3% and 98.5%, respectively, showing 10% enhancement when irradiated up to $48^{\circ}C$. However, removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen was proportional to the microwave irradiation rate or duration, obtaining 2.5%, 4.5% and 10.2%, respectively. Based on these results, it would be a useful strategy to irradiate microwave up to $49^{\circ}C$ to enhance MAP crystallization rate by changing the ionic pattern of nutrients in the manure. Meanwhile, provision of enough microwave irradiation rate might be needed to achieve high $NH_4$-N removal.

  • The distribution of impurity included in benzene layer crystal was explored in layer crystallization of cyclohexane and benzene mixtures. The influence of crystal growth rate on crystal purity was investigated. All experimental results for bezene-cyclohexane system obtained in layer crystallizer have been evaluated with the criterion of Wintermantel. The purity of crystal decreases with increasing degree of subcooling, decreasing feed concentration and increasing crystal growth rate. The crystal growth rate was a key parameter to determine the inclusion of impurity in crystals. The results obtained from runs performed at increasing crystallization time(i.e. crystal thickness) have clearly shown that migration of inclusions within crystal layer to the melt, leading to the removal of impurity occurs. The diffusion of impurity which takes place during the crystallization from the beginning, enhances a further purification of the crystal layer if that underwent a thermal gradient after growth of the layer crystal stops.

  • The study was made to compare the crystallization behavior of polypropylene (PP) with different stereo-regularity. The unit cell parameters, lamellar structure of PP, and the growth of thieir spherulites were strongly dependent upon the crystallization condition. It was shown that metastable structure appeared with increasing cooling rate. The structural change of isotactic PP (iPP) was larger than that of syndiotactic PP (sPP). The crystal structure of sPP showed body centered cell III when it is cooled down with 1 $^{\circ}C$/min. When sPP was grown to primitive cell II structure, both unit cell and lamellar structure were less affected by a cooling rate. The overall crystallization rate of ipp was faster than that of sPP.

  • Blends of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) were prepared by reaction extrusion with para-phenylene diisocyanate (PPDI). The crystallization behavior and biodegradability were investigated by using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), a wide angle X-ray diffractometer (WAXD), a contact angle goniometer, and a buffer solution containing esterase. The addition of PBT into PLA polymer matrix induced the cold crystallization of PLA phase, and the crystallization rate of PLA phase was significantly accelerated when both PBT and PPDI participated in the reaction with PLA simultaneously. But the chain extension caused by PPDI decreased the crystallinity and hydrophilicity of PLA and PBT phases. The crystallinity and hydrophilicity did not affect the biodegradability of PLA/PBT blends. However, phase separation between PLA and PBT in PLA/PBT blends increased the interfacial area exposed to the hydrolysis of enzyme, resulting in the improved degradability rate of PLA phase. In contrast, the improved interfacial adhesion between PLA and PBT matrices by the reaction with PPDI reduced the area exposed to the enzyme to decrease the degradation rate of PLA phase.

  • In this study, we proposed the novel method that can crystallize the amorphous silicon by adjacent Pd-MILC enhanced Ni-MILC. With this method, the MILC rate was about 15 ${\mu}$m/h at 550$^{\circ}C$ which is four times faster than conventional MILC rate. The crystallization rate increased rapidly with the spacing between Ni and Pd decreased. And it was independent on Ni and Pd layer thickness and amorphous silicon active width. However, when Pd was capped by a Ni layer, there's no enhancement on Ni-MILC. This phenomenon implies that the enhancement of Ni-MILC rate comes from not Pd material itself but Pd-MILC induced tensile stress. We can explain these phenomena with a novel MILC mechanism.

  • A simple multistep-concentration setting in capillaries was used to control the water-evaporation rate in vapor-diffusion protein crystallization. In the method used, a variety of evaporation rate curves were obtained by using the secondary precipitant solution referred to as “regulatory solution”, which is not directly exposed to the protein solution. The curves were applied to the crystallization of lysozyme as a model protein. The results clearly showed that crystal growth is dependent on the evaporation rate. Especially, the decoupling curves in which precipitant concentration in protein solutions increases to a certain point and then decreases to the equilibrium concentration gave the best crystals.

  • Effects of the polyol type and the hard segment content of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) on the crystallization of hard segments in TPUs were studied employing differential scanning calorimetry. Diols used for the preparation of TPUs were poly(tetramethylene ether glycol) (PTMEG), poly(propylene glycol) (PPG), polycaprolactone (PCL), poly(butylene adipate) (PBA) the molecular weights of which were 2000 and the hard segments contents of TPUs were $35\~44\;wt\%$. We found that crystallization of hard segments in TPUs were observed at higher temperatures and became faster with increasing hard segment contents of TPUs. The crystallization rate of TPU was also affected by the types of polyols used for the preparation of TPUs. It is postulated that lower miscibility of soft segments and hard segments results in higher crystallization rate and increase of cooling crystallization temperatures due to better hydrogen bending between hard segments in melts.

  • The effect of methylene chloride/1,3-dioxolane co-solvent on the crystallization in the optical polycarbonate film was investigated. Increasing 1,3-dioxolane content in co-solvent resulted in the crystallization due to the lowering of solvent evaporation rate during film drying process. The crystallization in PC film could be minimized by either controlling of solvent composition and increasing solvent drying temperature. It was found that the surface roughness of solution casting PC film was affected by both crystallization and solvent evaporation rate. This morphological effect by alternative solvent is ascribed to a large decrease in light transmissivity on the optical PC film.
