  • FeNi alloy nanofibers have been prepared by an electrospinning process followed by air-calcination and H2 reduction to develop electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbers in the giga-hertz (GHz) frequency range. The thermal behavior and phase and morphology evolution in the synthetic processes were systematically investigated. Through the heat treatments of calcination and H2 reduction, as-spun PVP/FeNi precursor nanofiber has been stepwise transformed into nickel iron oxide and FeNi phases but the fibrous shape was maintained perfectly. The FeNi alloy nanofiber had the high aspect ratio and the average diameter of approximately 190 nm and primarily composed of FeNi nanocrystals with an average diameter of ~60 nm. The FeNi alloy nanofibers could be used for excellent EM wave absorbing materials in the GHz frequency range because the power loss of the FeNi nanofibers increased up to 20 GHz without a degradation and exhibited the superior EM wave absorption properties compared to commercial FeNi nanoparticles.

  • View factor determination is very important in thermal analysis problems with surface radiation but it is very difficult to determine view factors for complex geometries. Exact calculation of view factors for crystal growth furnace is essential due to not only its high surface temperature but the radiation shield, complicated heating system. In this study, view factor calculation algorithm is introduced and applied to cylindrical crystal growth furnace. This algorithm is based on the Hemi-Cube Algorithm and the results obtained with this algorithm show good agreements with those of analytical solution. As an application of this algorithm, temperature profiles and heating value distributions for various furnaces are calculated and the shape criteria for better furnace are suggested.

  • To effectively utilize resources of reject ash and dredged soil, globular shape-formed artificial lightweight aggregate were manufactured in 8~10 mm size. Starting materials were changed various grading and composition, sintered at $1050{\sim}1250^{\circ}C$. The specific gravity, water absorptance of artificial lightweight aggregates were measured on the basis of the KS. In this study could make a prediction about application of bloating mechanism by ferrous materials and alkali/alkali-earth oxide at high temperature.

  • The finite element formulation and simulation of drying process for ceramic electric insulators are investigated. The heat and moisture movements in green ceramics caused by the interaction of temperature gradient, moisture gradient, conduction, convection and evaporation are considered. The variations of temperature and moisture not only change the volume but also induce the hygro-thermal stress. The finite element formulation for solving the temperature and moisture distributions as well as the associated hygro-thermal stresses is derived. Using the computer code developed, the drying process of a ceramic electric insulator is simulated. Temperature distribution, moisture distribution, hygrothermal stress and deformed shape during the drying process are predicted.

  • YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{x}$ (Y123) single crystal was grown by TSMG (top seeded melt growth) method. Physical properties of Y123 single crystal were dependent on the shape and distribution of Y2BaCuOx (Y211) in it and on the oxygenation temperature and the holding time. In this work, It was investigated to an optimal oxygenation condition and a dependence of melting temperature and holding time on physical properties. The optimal oxygenation condition was found that it was heat-treated for 30 hours at 45$0^{\circ}C$, Also it was found that the critical current density and the size of Y211 were increased with the melting temperature and the holding time.e.

  • In this work, we report a highly deformable covalent adaptable-liquid crystal elastomer (CA-LCE) comprising dynamic thiourea bonds that enable macromolecular network rearrangement at elevated temperatures. The exchange of chain network is verified through stress-relaxation analyses and follows Arrhenius-type behavior. The unique capability of rearranging the chain network in the CA-LCE provides useful properties, such as welding, melt reprocessing, and shape reprogramming, that cannot be achieved by the conventional LCE comprising permanent crosslinks. Reversible actuation is further demonstrated by reprogramming the polydomain CA-LCE into a monodomain via mechanical stretching at elevated temperatures.

  • Burr and shape distortion are two main problems in micro-grooving. In this study, a simplified model is proposed based on large thrust force due to the tool edge radius. Experiments are conducted with a single crystal diamond tool on a 3-axis snaper-like machine varying the depth of cuts, and groove angles on brass, aluminum and OFHC. Experiments have shown that the thrust force becomes a dominant variable in burr generation compared to the principal force when the depth of cut is less than 2${\mu}m$. And fewer burrs develop on more brittle materials. Shape distortion is significant only when the groove angle is small and the depth of cut is larger than 30 ${\mu}m$.

  • This paper deals with the non contact optical sensor to measure the shape of transparent plates such as glass panel of LCD(Liquid Crystal Display). The conventional methods to obtain the shape or thickness of a transparent plates are contact type sensor such as LVOT(Linear Variable Differential Transformer). Due to the contact between the tip of the sensor and the surface of objects, the tip is abraded. In addition, the high temperature glass casting makes the size of sensor body changed. These reasons makes the sensor degraded. In this paper, to overcome these problem, we proposed a low cost noncontact optical sensor this is composed of the Hologram laser unit of a CD-Pickup and a plastic lens. To evaluate the performance of the proposed optical sensor, a series of experiments were performed for various measurement condition. Based upon observation of the experimental result, the developed sensor shows good result for measuring the shape of transparent plates.

  • Effects of reaction conditions such as power input and feeding time and feeding mode of reactants on the reaction crystallization of lanthanum oxalate in semi-batch reactor were investigated experimentally. Even though the crystal size distribution of lanthanum oxalate was always monomodal, its mean crystal size was significantly varied with the reaction conditions. As the power input and reactant feeding rate increased, the mean crystal size was reduced and the relative induction time was prolonged. The mean crystal size produced in oxalic acid feeding mode was smaller than that in lanthanum chloride feeding mode, but the trend of the relative induction time with the feeding mode was reverse to that of the mean crystal size. The crystal morphology of lanthanum oxalate, which was produced within the ranges of the reaction conditions in our experiment, was maintained as a needle shape.
