  • Cryogenic rolling combined with warm rolling has been found to be more effective than only cryogenic rolling procedure in improving the strength of a 5052 Al alloy. In this study, cryo-rolled 5052 Al alloys were aged at $175^{\circ}C$. Warm rolling was conducted after dipping plates into silicon oil bath. A notable increase of tensile strength is achieved by the precipitation during warm rolling. The mechanical behavior of this alloy was investigated by hardness and tensile tests. The microstructure was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the cryogenic rolling combined with warm rolling was very effective in improving tensile strength.

  • The effect of cryogenic heavy rolling method on grain refinement has been studied and compared with those obtained by previous methods of cryogenic rolling and heavy rolling developed separately. Both grain structure and grain size were analyzed using electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD), which can distinguish grains each other by means of crystallographic misorientations between them. The cryogenic rolling and heavy rolling exhibit reduction in grain size of 39% and 87%, respectively, and the cryogenic heavy rolling shows reduced grain size similar to that observed in the heavy rolling. The heavy rolling was proved more effective in grain size refinement than the cryogenic rolling.

  • In order to investigate the effect of cryogenic rolling on the critical current density (Jc), 54 and 55-multi-filament Bi-2223/hg tapes have been fabricated using a PIT process including two different types of cooling methods. The densification of oxide filament was found to occur due to the cryogenic rolling, and this enhanced the critical current density. However, when the wire was fully immersed in liquid nitrogen used as the coolant in cryogenic rolling, Jc degradation appeared caused by the nitrogen penetration into the filament. The cryogenically rolled tape with an improved type of cooling showed approximately 10% Jc's increase.

  • The large deformation at cryogenic temperature would be one of the effective methods to produce large bulk UFG materials. The effects of annealing temperature 150∼300$^{\circ}C$, on microstructure and mechanical properties of the sheets received 85% reduction at cryogenic temperature were investigated. In comparison with those at room temperature. Annealing of 5083 Al alloy deformed 85%, at 200$^{\circ}C$ for an hour, results in the considerable increase of tensile elongation without the great loss of strength and the occurrence of equiaxed grains less than 300nm in diameter.

  • The effect of annealing temperature on microstructures and mechanical properties of the 5052 Al sheets rolled 88% reduction at cryogenic temperature was investigated for the annealing temperature of 150 ~ $300^{\circ}C$, in comparison with those rolled at room temperature. The presence of equiaxed grains, whose size is about 200nm in a diameter, was observed in the alloy deformed 88% and annealed $200^{\circ}C$ for an hour. When compared with the deformation at room temperature, the deformation at cryogenic temperature showed the higher strengths and equivalent elongation after annealing at the annealing temperature below $200^{\circ}C$. However, for annealing above $250^{\circ}C$ materials deformed at cryogenic temperature showed the lower strength than those deformed at room temperature. This behavior might be attributed to the higher rate of recrystallization and growth in materials deformed at cryogenic temperature during annealing, due to the lager density of dislocations accumulated during the deformation.

  • This paper is concerned with the prediction of micro structural changes of Al alloys during cryogenic rolling using an Eulerian finite element analysis. The main objective of cryogenic rolling is to obtain ultra-fine grains by severe plastic deformation at the extremely low temperature. Thereby, this simulation focuses on micro structural developments - the texture development and the changes in the size and shape of grains. The former one may be modeled using a crystal plasticity theory while the other can be predicted by a streamline technique. Applications to three pass rolling are given.

  • The annealing behavior of a 5083 Al alloy deformed at cryogenic temperature was investigated, focusing on the evolution of microstructures and mechanical properties. Especially, the effects of annealing temperature, $150~300^{\circ}C$, and time, 3∼60min., on microstructures and mechanical properties of the sheets received 85% reduction at cryogenic temperature were investigated. The optimization of the annealing conditions resulted in a mixture of equiaxed grains and elongated subgrains, exhibiting a good combination of uniform elongation and high strength.
