Cryogenic air separation unit(ASU) was developed about 100 year ago in Europe. However, because there is not any ability of process design or manufacturing of ASU in Korea, many ASUs come from advanced countries every year. The purpose of this study is the development of cryogenic air separation unit by our own ability, especially cold box for nitrogen production. On this study, we developed the computer program for physical properties of gases and process simulation. We also did process design and manufactured of cold box, including air separation column, liquid air heat exchanger and condenser. The result of cold box test was successful.

An apparatus was developed to repetitively apply a -196 $^{\circ}C$ thermal load to coupon-sized mechanical test specimens. Using this device, IM7/5250-4 (carbon / bismaleimide) cross-ply and quasi-isotropic laminates were submerged in liquid nitrogen (L$N_2$) 400 times. Ply-by-Ply micro-crack density, laminate modulus, and laminate strength were measured as a function of thermal cycles. Quasi-isotropic samples of IM7/977-3 (carbon / epoxy) composite were also manually cycled between liquid nitrogen and an oven set at 120 $^{\circ}C$ for 130 cycles to determine whether including elevated temperature in the thermal cycle significantly altered the degree or location of micro-cracking. In response to thermal cycling, both materials micro-cracked extensively in the surface plies followed by sparse cracking of the inner plies. The tensile modulus of the IM7/5250-4 specimens was unaffected by thermal cycling, but the tensile strength of two of the lay-ups decreased by as much as 8.5 %.
Cryogenic insulation systems, with proper materials selection and execution, can offer the highest levels of thermal performance. Insulations are listed in order of increasing performance and, generally, in order of increasing cost. The specific insulation to be used for a particular application is determined through a compromise between cost, ease of application and the effectiveness of the insulation. Consequently, materials, representative test conditions, and engineering approach for the particular application are crucial to achieve the optimum result. The present work is based on energy cost balance for optimizing the thickness of insulated chambers, using foamed or multi layered cryogenic shell. The considered insulation is a uniformly applied outer layer whose thickness varies with the initial and boundary conditions of the studied vessel under steady-state radial heat transfer. An expression of the optimal insulation thickness derived from the total cost function and depending on the geometrical parameters of the container is presented.
Since the fiber reinforced polymeric (FRP) composites are considered in next generation of space transportation systems, reliable thermal expansion properties should be well provided for structural design of composite materials. To obtain accurate mechanical behaviors at a cryogenic temperature, precise strain measurement and calibration must be provided. In this work, apparent strains (or thermal output) of temperature self-compensated strain gages were deliberately investigated for epoxy, CTBN modified epoxy and carbon fabric composite system from room temperature to liquid nitrogen temperature. Also, fourth-order thermal output curves were presented for the further calibration. The results showed that the thermal output is heavily dependent on test materials and a large amount of apparent strains were observed for the polymer resins.

The temperature of cryogenic propellant in the propellant tank increases during flight due to heat input from surroundings. The propellant which temperature rises up over the required condition of turbo-pump remains as unusable propellant at the end of flight. In this paper the estimation method of the heat transfer coefficient at the upper layer of cryogenic propellant was presented. The heat transfer mode at the propellant upper layer was considered as conduction. Temperature distributions near propellant surface obtained from heat transfer coefficient were compared with test data to show the possibility of this method.
In order to evaluate the cryogenic fracture characteristics of structural steels for superconducting magnets of fusion reactor, small punch (SP) testing was performed on austenitic stainless steel (JN1 base metal) and its TIG weldments at 293K, 77K and 4K. The mechanical properties with respect to the extracted location of the weld metal, on the effects of welding heat cycle about base metal near fusion line in TIG weldments were investigated. The mechanical property of the weld metal in TIG weldments depends on distance from welding root, root region of weldments having the lowest mechanical property. The base metal near fusion line showed degradation of mechanical property caused by cyclic heating during the TIG welding. Based on the test results, HAZ was found to be up to 5mm from the fusion line. It is shown that SP testing is a useful tool to evaluate the mechanical properties with respect to the microstructures changes such as HAZ as well as weld metal in TIG weldments at cryogenic temperature.

This study represents basic research for the development of submerged pump technology applicable to transfer and storage of a cryogenic liquids. Its purpose is to secure baseline design data by applying reverse engineering to the process of developing a submerged cryogenic pump. The two-stage model included in the ARTICK Series LNG Submerged Pump produced by Vanzetti of Italy was selected for analysis for development of a localized product, and was disassembled for reverse engineering. The pump was disassembled after analyzing its processing/assembly characteristics such as shrinkage of fittings. In addition, the materials used in manufacturing of the main components were analyzed, and the ingredients were confirmed. As a result, a design drawing for each component required for product development was secured via foundational design, and a test product was manufactured by maximizing the application of appropriate domestic technologies.
Recently, research on applying composite materials to various industrial fields is being actively conducted. In particular, composite materials fabricated by Fused Deposition Modeling 3D printers have more advantages than existing materials as they have fewer restrictions on manufacturing shape, reduce the time required, weight. With these advantages, it is possible to consider utilizing composite materials in cryogenic environments such as the application of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen, which are mainly used in an aerospace and mobility. However, FDM composite materials are not verified in cryogenic environments less than 150K. This study evaluates the characteristics of composite materials such as tensile strength and strain using a UTM (Universal Testing Machine). The specimen is immersed in liquid nitrogen (77 K) to cool down during the test. The specimen is fabricated using 3D print, and can be manufactured by stacking reinforced fibers such as carbon fiber, fiber glass, and aramid fiber (Kevlar) with base material (Onyx). For the experimental method and specimen shape, international standards ASTM D638 and ASTM D3039 for tensile testing of composite materials were referenced.
Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research(KSTAR) device is composed of 30 superconducting magnets, magnet structure, vacuum vessel, cryostat, current feeder system, and etc. KSTAR device is operated in the cryogenic temperature and high magnetic field. We install about 800 sensors - temperature sensors, stain gages, displacement gages, hall sensors - to monitor the thermal, mechanical, electrical status of KSTAR during operation. As a tremendous numbers of sensors should be installed for monitoring the KSTAR device, the method of effective installation was developed. The sensor test was successfully carried out to check its reliability and its reproduction in the cryogenic temperature. The sensor signal is processed by PXI-based DAQ system and communicated with central control system via machine network and is shown by Operator Interface(OPI) display in the main control room. In order to safely operate the device, any violations of mechanical & superconductive characteristic of the device components were informed to its operation system & operator. If the monitored values exceed the pre-set values, the protective action should be taken against the possible damage. In this paper, the system composition, operation criteria, operation result were presented.
