Development of large bore superconducting magnet for wastewater treatment application

  • Water issue, especially water pollution, is a serious issue of 21st century. Being an significant technique for securing water resources, superconducting magnetic separation wastewater system was indispensable. A large bore conduction-cooled magnet was custom-tailored for wastewater treatment. The superconducting magnet has been designed, fabricated and tested. The superconducting magnet was composed of NbTi solenoid coils with an effective horizontal warm bore of 400 mm and a maximum central field of 2.56T. The superconducting magnet system was cooled by a two-stage 1.5W 4K GM cryocooler. The NbTi solenoid coils were wound around an aluminum former that is thermally connected to the second stage cold head of the cryocooler through a conductive copper link. The temperature distribution along the conductive link was measured during the cool-down process as well as at steady state. The magnet was cooled down to 4.8K in approximately 65 hours. The test of the magnetic field and quench analysis has been performed to verify the safe operation for the magnet system. Experimental results show that the superconducting magnet reached the designed magnetic performance.

  • Recent trends in shipbuilding and offshore industries are a huge increase in the ship size and the exploration and production of oil and natural gas in the arctic offshore region. High performance steel plates are required by these industrial trends. Also in IMO(International Maritime Organization) has begun to regulate of fuel of ship to environmental protection, therefore it is little bit difficult to use bunker-C oil to working ship. As the problem of environmental change such as global warming is emerged, the operation of the ship is considered to be involved in the environmental change problem, and the regulation of environmental pollution is gradually strengthened. As these environmental regulations are strengthened demand for LNG fuel ships is rapidly increasing. Currently, cryogenic steels used in LNG tanks include aluminum alloy, SUS 304, and 9%-Ni steel. Those steels are has high cost to construction of large LNG carrier. The new materials were suggested several steel mills to decrease construction cost and easy construction. The new cryogenic steel should be evaluate safety to applied real structure include LNG ship. Therefore, in this study, fracture toughness of weld joints were investigated with cryogenic steel for application of LNG tank.

Measurement of outgassing rates of Kevlar and S-Glass materials used in torque tubes of High Tc Superconducting (HTS) Motors

  • Torque tubes in High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) motor transfer torque from superconducting field winding rotor to the room temperature shaft. It should have minimum heat conduction property for minimizing the load on cryo-refrigerator. Generally, these torque tubes are made with stainless steel material because of high strength, very low outgassing and low thermal contraction properties at cryogenic temperatures and vacuum conditions. With recent developments in composite materials, these torque tubes could be made of composites such as Kevlar and S-Glass, which have the required properties like high strength and low thermal conductivity at cryogenic temperatures, but with a reduced weight. Development and testing of torque tubes made of these composites for HTS motor are taken up at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Hyderabad in collaboration with Central Institute of Plastics and Engineering Technology (CIPET), Chennai and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur. As these materials are subjected to vacuum, it is important to measure their outgassing rates under vacuum conditions before manufacturing prototype torque tubes. The present study focusses on the outgassing characteristics of Kevlar and S-Glass, using an Outgassing Measurement System (OMS), developed at IIT Kharagpur. The OMS facility works under vacuum environment, in which the test samples are exposed to vacuum conditions over a sufficient period of time. The outgassing measurements for the composite samples were obtained using pressure-rise technique. These studies are useful to quantify the outgassing rate of composite materials under vacuum conditions and to suggest them for manufacturing composite torque tubes used in HTS motors.

현무암 섬유 보강 폴리우레탄폼의 열적 성능 및 극저온 환경에서의 기계적 특성 평가 (Evaluation of Thermal Performance and Mechanical Properties in the Cryogenic Environment of Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polyurethane Foam)

  • LNG CCS which is a special type of cargo hold operated at -163℃ for transporting liquefied LNG is composed of a primary barrier, plywood, insulation panel, secondary barrier, and mastic. Currently, glass fiber is used to reinforce polyurethane foam. In this paper, we evaluated the possibility of replacing glass fiber-reinforced polyurethane foam with basalt fiber-reinforced polyurethane foam. We conducted a thermal conductivity test to confirm thermal performance at room temperature. To evaluate the mechanical properties between basalt and glass-fiber-reinforced polyurethane foam which is fiber content of 5 wt% and 10 wt%, tensile and an impact test was performed repeatedly. All of the tests were performed at room temperature and cryogenic temperature(-163℃) in consideration of the temperature gradient in the LNG CCS. As a result of the thermal conductivity test, the insulating performance of glass fiber reinforced polyurethane foam and basalt fiber reinforced polyurethane foam presented similar results. The tensile test results represent that the strength of basalt fiber-reinforced polyurethane foam is superior to glass fiber at room temperature, and there is a clear difference. However, the strength is similar to each other at cryogenic temperatures. In the impact test, the strength of PUR-B5 is the highest, but in common, the strength decreases as the weight ratio of the two fibers increases. In conclusion, basalt fiber-reinforced polyurethane foam has sufficient potential to replace glass fiber-reinforced polyurethane foam.

화재 안전용 볼밸브의 열·구조 연성해석 (Thermal-structural Coupled Field Analysis for Fire Safety Type Ball Valve)

  • The safety of transporting equipment in a cryogenic condition is one of important problems under the circumstances that the application weight of natural gas is gradually increasing. As a larger disaster may be generated by leakage of oil or gas from valves in case of fire occurrence of a ship, the present research applied a numerical analysis method on thermal stress distribution and deformation, etc. to the design of ball valves satisfying fire safety test's specification(API607) to prevent this. In addition, the present research progressed fire safety tests and compared the test result with numerical analysis results. The Max stress by parts was confirmed through thermal analysis of major parts to evaluate safety. The fire safety test was progressed according to the regulation of API607.

멤브레인 LNG 저장탱크용 STS304L의 인장 및 피로강도 (Tensile and Fatigue Strengths of STS304L for LNG Membrane Storage Tank)

  • STS304L of membrane structure has been used for a LNG storage tank and has exposed long time under the cryogenic temperature. The purposes of this study are to evaluate the mechanical properties of base and used materials for STS304L of membrane. The tensile and high cycle fatigue tests were investigated for STS304L of membrane used over 20 years at room temperature and $-162^{\circ}C$. In addition, the test of base STS304L was performed in order to compare with used material properties. The chemical composition and phase change were investigated from EDS and XRD. From results of tensile test, yield and ultimate tensile strengths of used STS304L are smaller than those of base STS304L. S-N curves were obtained from fatigue tests at both temperatures. Also, P-S-N curves were presented with statistical method recommend by JSME-S002. Fractography was conducted for analysis of fracture mechanisms.

  • In the response to increasing the demands for electrical energy, much effort aimed to develop and commercialize 1MVA HTS power equipments that is supported by a grant from center for Applied Superconductivity Technology of the 21st Century Frontier R&D Program funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology is going on in Korea. For the development, the cryogenic insulation and winding insulation of it in this paper are discussed. In the first many types of dielectric insulating tests were carried out. In detail Breakdown characteristics of $LN_2$, FRP and turn insulating films, flashover characteristics along the FRP surface in $LN_2$ were verified after distinguishing insulation components in HIS windings. And then model windings were designed and insulation test was conducted. These included a AC withstand voltage test of 50kV rms and a lightning impulse test of 150kV at peak.

Vacuum Test of Cavity with Liquid Nitrogen

  • Schematic of RAON vacuum system is introduced. Vacuum test for superconducting cavity with liquid nitrogen is performed. Schematic plan for RAON vacuum system is introduced and vacuum control system for superconducting cavity test is constructed. Vacuum pressure of cavity is shown as a function of pumping time. The temperature of cavity is shown as a function of cooling time. Outgassing species from cavity is also detected. Detailed experimental procedure is presented to test the cavity vacuum with liquid nitrogen.

  • 본 연구에서 적용한 발사체용 산화제 터널형 배관은 액체산소를 터보펌프까지 전달하는 장치로 산화제 탱크 하부에 설치된 연료탱크를 관통하여 설치된다. 터널형 배관은 연료탱크를 우회하여 설치되는 우회 배관에 비해 무게가 절감되나 열전달 표면적이 커져 연료 탱크에 저장된 연료의 온도를 변화 시킬 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 터널형 배관의 극저온 성능시험을 통하여 배관 특성 및 연료 탱크로의 열전달 현상을 고찰하였으며, 또한 발사체에 적용가능성을 확인하였다.
