  • The conceptual determination of mixed-refrigerant (MR) for a closed Joule-Thomson cryocooler is described in this paper. The thermodynamic cycle design was mainly considered to develop a cryocooler by using a compressor of domestic air-conditioning unit. The target cooling performance of the designed cryocooler is 10 W around 70 K with less than 5 kJ/kg enthalpy rise. The systematic approach of choosing a proper refrigerant among 20 different kinds of mixture for such cryogenic temperature was introduced in detail. The main components of the cryocooler are compressor, evaporator, oil separator, after-cooler, counterflow heat exchanger, and J-T expansion device. Due to the limitation of the compressor operation range, the temperature after the compression was limited below $117^{\circ}C$ (390 K) and the temperature before compression was restricted above $5^{\circ}C$ (278 K). 20 atm of discharging pressure (high pressure) and less than 3 atm suction pressure (low pressure) were the design conditions. The inlet temperature of a counterflow heat exchanger in the high Pressure side was about 300 K. The proper composition of the mixed refrigerant for the designed J-T cryocooler is 15% mol of$ N_2, 30% mol of $CH_4,\; 30% mol\; of C^2H^ 6,\; 10%\; mol\; of\; C_3H_8\; and \;15%\; mol\; of\; i-C_4H_10$.

  • The thermal stability conditions are investigated for superconducting magnet systems cooled conductively by cryocooler without liquid cryogens. The worst scenario in the systems is that the heat generation in the resistive state exceeds the refrigeration. causing a rise in the temperature of the magnet winding and leading to the burnout. It is shown by an analytical solution that in the continuous resistive state, the temperature may increase indefinitely or a stable steady-state may be reached, depending upon the relative size of the magnet with respect to the refrigeration capacity of the cryocooler. The stability criteria include the temperature-dependent Properties of the magnet materials and the refrigeration characteristics of the cryocooler. A useful graphical scheme is Presented and discussed to demonstrate the physical importance of the results.

  • The helium recondensing type cryostat with 4 K GM cryocooler is fabricated in order to keep cryogenic state of two saddle type superconducting magnet opposite to each other designed maximum 0.3 T magnetic field, and 1270 mm diameter open bore. The current leads which consist of metal current leads made for brass sheet and HTS current leads made in American Superconductor$^{TM}$ intermediate cool down with cryocooler Thus , the cryocooler for helium recondensing is a 1.5W/4.2 K GM SUMITOMO cryocooler. While superconducting magnet is working of 1600 gauss to 200 A, the cryostat keep constantly the level of liquid helium at 0.05 bar gauge pressure.e.

  • The design parameters to affect the cooling capacity of a cryocooler were examined with the application of numerical modeling to optimize an inertance pulse tube cryocooler. This modeling includes the regenerator, pulse tube, inertance tube, gas reservoir, and heat exchangers. One-dimensional modeling on strings of acoustic and thermoacoustic elements was applied to compare the design parameters. The diameter and length of the pulse tube can significantly affect the cooling capacity and efficiency. The aftercooler was optimized by maintaining a certain size. The efficiency also improved as the length of inertance tube and volume of gas reservoir are increased. It was confirmed that effective design parameters are critical to the performance of an inertance pulse tube cryocooler considering the comparison of the dimensions of each part to optimize its cooling power and efficiency.

  • A Stirling cryocooler is relatively compact, reliable, commercially available, and uses helium as a working fluid. The FPFD stirling cryocooler consists of two compressor pistons driven by linear motors which makes pressure waves and a pneumatically driven displacer piston with regenerator. It is the most suitable design for a mechanical cryocooler utilized in night vision environment. In order to get optimum operating frequency, natural frequency of piston and displacer, optimum phase angle between piston and displacer, cooling capacity, performance tests of the Stirling cryocooler by the frequency characteristics were performed.

  • The needs for the cryocooler which has high reliability and long MTTF are increased in the military and commercial thermal imaging system The gas contamination wear, leakage of the working fluid, fatigue and etc. have the significant effects on the reliability and MTTF(Mean Time To Failure) or MTBF(Mean Time Between Failure) of the Stirling cryocooler. In the KIMM, the Stilting cryocooler with the linear compressor was released after the several performance tests were performed. This paper describe the experimental facility for the MTTF evaluation and some typical results of the Stilling cryocooler.

  • This paper presents the results of a series of performance tests for the Stilting cryocooler. A free piston and free displacer(FPFD) Stilting cryocooler for cooling infrared and cryo-sensors is currently under development at KIMM. Our coolers are specifically designed to work in the thermal imaging device and to meet requirements such as cooling capacity, COP and high reliability. In this work, Stilting cryocooler is designed, manufactured and fabricated, and performance characteristics for the vibration, acoustic noise, EMI and leak rate are evaluated. Vibration outputs are measured to 20KHz for compressor and expander, respectively. And, the objective of noise test is a noise level, less than 30㏈ at 5 m. EMI tests are carried out according to the standard MIL-STD-461C tests RE01 and RE02. Leak test for the Stilting cryocooler is performed by bombing method.

  • This paper presents the results of a series of performance and reliability tests for the Stirling cryocooler. Infrared sensor systems incorporating cryocoolers are required to be qualified to the appropriate specification for the performance and reliability. FPFD Stirling cryocooler is currently under development for cooling infrared detector. Manufactured Stirling cryocooler delivers approximately 0.9W cooling at 80K for 30W∼40W of input power. It takes approximately 2 minutes to cool down to 80K at the ambient temperature of 23$^{\circ}C$. Performance characteristics for the vibration, acoustic noise, EMI and leak rate of the Stirling cryocooler are evaluated. We performed low and high temperature keeping test from -32$^{\circ}C$ to +52$^{\circ}C$ and operating test at high and low temperature cyclic range with acceptance tests performed at scheduled intervals. Cooling capacity is determined as a function of the temperatures at the compressor, hot end and cold tip at the expander. Finally, we describe the experimental facility for the MTTF evaluation and some typical results of the Stirling cryocooler.
