  • To achieve good cryogenic circumstances by Gifford-McMahon cryocooler, we have to constitute optimal conditions with various factors for G-M cryocooler. In this study, cool-down characteristics were presented with some factors using brass matrix mesh (1st stage) and Pb ball (2nd stage) as regenerator materials for the heat exchangers. The effects of the variations of Helium gas pressure and cycle frequency on the cooling capacity of G-M cryocooler are investigated experimentally. The presented results could be summarized as follows : 1) As the steady state pressure increases, 'no load temperature' decreases but cooling capacity increases. 2) It is confirmed that the characteristics of the specific heat of the regenerator materials agree well with the cool-down characteristics of 10 K cryocooler.

  • A free piston and free displacer(FPFD) Stirling cryocooler for cooling infrared and cryo-sensors is currently under development at KIMM(Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials). The FPFD Stirling cryocooler employs 1) the Stirling cycle for refrigeration, 2) linear motors for driving the cryocooler, 3) spring and gas support systems, and 4) fine gap for clearance seals. It is the most suitable design for a mechanical cryocooler utilized in night vision environment. The experimental results show KIMM-E1 Stirling cryocooler (with expander manufactured by KIMM) has the higher cooling power and faster response time at optimum charging pressure.

  • A free piston and free displacer (FPFD) Stirling cryocooler has been widely used for the cooling infrared and cryo-sensor. The thermodynamic performance of the free piston and free displacer type (FPFD) Stirling cryocooler is highly dependent on the operating frequency of the linear compressor and the natural frequency of the displacer. In this study, to find optimal relation between operating and natural frequency of the displacer the dynamic characteristics of the displacer in the expansion space of the Stirling cooler was investigated by experiment. The experimental results show that the Stifling cryocooler has maximum cooling capacity at the operating frequency of about 0.8 times of the natural frequency of displacer. Therefore the operating frequency of the Stirring cryocooler should be determined by natural frequency of the linear compressor and displacer.

  • The conductive link is used as a cooling medium between a cryocooler and magnet in a cryogen-free superconducting magnet system. The low temperature superconducting (LTS) magnet has one solenoidal configuration with a metal former which has a 52 mm room temperature bore. The superconducting coil is installed in the cryostat maintaining high vacuum and cooled by a two-stage cryocooler. In order to maintain the operating temperature of magnet at the designed level, the cold head temperature of the cryocooler must be lower so that heat can be removed from the superconducting coil. Also, temperature difference is occurred between the magnet and cryocooler and its magnitude is dependent upon the contact resistance at the interfacial surface between metals in the conductive link. In the paper, the performance of the LTS magnet is investigated with respect to the conductive link between the magnet former and the cold head of the cryocooler. The effects of the contact pressure and interfacial materials on the temperature distribution along the conductive link are also presented.

  • To obtain superconducting state, a reliable cryocooler system is required. Structural and thermal design have been performed to design cryocooler system operated with reverse Brayton cycle using gas neon as refrigerant. This cryocooler system consists of compressor recuperator, coldbox, control valves and has 1 ㎾ cooling capacity. Heat loss calculation was conducted for the given cryocooler system by considering the conduction and radiation through the multi-layer insulation (MLI) and high vacuum. The results can be summarized as; conduction heat loss is 7 W in valves and access port and radiation heat loss is 18 W through the surface of cryocooler. The full design specifications were discussed.

  • Stirling cryocooler is relatively compact, reliable, commercially available. and uses helium as a working fluid. Over the past decade and a half, there has been rapid development of Stirling cryocooler, mainly for military and space applications. Stirling cryocoolers have been widely used lot the cooling of infrared sensors and high temperature superconducting filters to the temperature of the liquid nitrogen. The Stirling cryocooler with the rotary compressor is applicable to the cooling device for the compact mobile thermal imaging system, because the cryocoolers have the compact structure and light weight. In this paper, integral Stirling cryocooler is designed, manufactured and fabricated, and performance characteristics are investigated. This cooler delivers approximately 0.6W cooling at 80K for 20W of input power from 24V DC power supply.

  • Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials (KIMM) has developed a high efficient Stirling cryocooler with moving magnet linear compressor for precooling hydrogen liquefier and cooling high temperature superconductor (HTS) devices, such as superconductor cable and superconductor fault current limiters. Hydrogen liquefier and HTS electric devices require cryocooler with cooling capacity of hundred watts to kilowatts at 77 K. The compressor in the Stirling cryocooler uses opposed moving magnet linear motors to drive opposed pistons. High efficient Stirling cryocooler is designed by SAGE-software, manufactured and tested systematically. A cooling capacity of 1 kW at 77 K with an electric input power of 9.6 kW has been analyzed. But prototype test results of the Stirling cryocooler have the cooling capacity of 0.65 kW at 76.8 K with an electric input power of 8.1 kW. And then, 21.5% Carnot COP (Coefficient of performance) of the prototype Stirling cryocooler is achieved. The comparison analysis between SAGE-model and experimental results has shown the direction for further design optimization of the Stirling cryocooler.

  • The Joule-Thomson cryocooler with $H_2$gas has been developed. Cool-down characteristics and the cooling performance of a JT cryocooler have been investigated in detail. The JT cryocooler consists of JT expansion valve, heat exchanger, expansion chamber, compressed $H_2$gas storage tank, $LN_2$precooler, heater and a cryostat. The precooling process using both $GN_2$and $LN_2$was peformed to cool down the inside components of cryocooler under the maximum inversion temperature of $H_2$. The $H_2$expansion experiments have been peformed for 2-5MPa of H$_2$pressure to evaluate steady state temperatures of the cryocooler. It is found that the steady state temperatures are decreased as the H$_2$pressures are increased. The effects of cooling temperatures on the performance have been evaluated for various $H_2$and $N_2$pressures. It is seen that the cooling loads are increased, as the cooling temperature and operating pressure are increased.

  • Cryogenic cooling system for HTS electric power devices requires a reliable and efficient high-capacity cryocooler. A Striling cryocooler with a linear compressor can be a good candidate. It has advantages of low vibration and long maintenance cycle compared with a kinematic-driven Stirling cryocooler. In this study, we developed dual-opposed linear compressor of 12 kW electric input power with two 6 kW linear motors. Electrical performance of fabricated linear compressor is verified by experimental measurement of thrust constant. The developed Stirling cryocooler has gamma-type configuration. Piston and displacer are supported with flexure spring. A slit-type heat exchanger is adopted for cold and warm-end, and the generated heat is rejected by cooling water. In cooling performance test, waveforms of voltage, current, displacement and pressure are obtained and their amplitude and phase difference are analysed. Moreover, temperatures of cooling water, housing and linear motor are recorded and electric power parameters of driving circuit are also obtained. The developed Stirling cryocooler reaches to 47.8 K within 23.4 min. with no-load. From heat load tests, it shows cooling capacity of 440 W at 78.1 K with 6.45 kW of electric input power and 19.4 of % Carnot COP.
