Mechanical shear connectors are commonly used to transfer longitudinal shear forces across the steel-concrete interface in composite beams. Steel pipe as a new shear connector is proposed in this research and its performance to achieve composite strength is investigated. Experimental monotonic push-out tests were carried out for this connector. Then, a nonlinear finite element model of the push-out specimens is developed and verified against test results. Further, the finite element model is used to investigate the effects of pipe thickness, length and diameter on the shear strength of the connectors. The ultimate strengths of these connectors are reported and their respective failure modes are discussed. This paper comprises of the push-out tests of ten specimens on this shear connector in both the vertical and horizontal positions in different reinforced concretes. The results of experimental tests are given as load-deformation plots. It is concluded that the use of these connectors is very effective and economical in the medium shear demand range of 150-350 KN. The dominant failure modes observed were either failure of concrete block (crushing and splitting) or shear failure of pipe connector. It is shown that the horizontal pipe is not as effective as vertical pipe shear connector and is not recommended for practical use. It is shown that pipe connectors are more effective in transferring shear forces than channel and stud connectors. Moreover, based on the parametric study, a formula is presented to predict the pipe shear connectors' capacity.
The shear failure modes of FRP strengthened concrete beams are quite different to those of the beams strengthened with steel stirrups. When the beams are externally wrapped with FRP composites, many beams fail in shear due to concrete crushing before the FRP reaches its rupture strain. In order to predict the shear strength of such beams, the effective strain of the FRP must be blown. This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the performance of reinforced concrete beams externally wrapped with FRP composites and infernally reinforced with steel stirrups. The main parameters of the tests were FRP reinforcement ratio, the type of fiber material (carbon or glass) and configuration (continues sheets or strips). The experimentally observed effective strain of the FRP was compared with the strain calculated using a proposed method.

This study has been carried out in two-phases to develop Fiber Reinforced Self-Compacting Concrete (FRSCC) performance. In the first phase, the composition of the quaternary composite binder compromised CEM I 42.5N (58-70%), Rice Husk Ash (25-37%), quartz sand (2.5-7.5%) and limestone crushing waste (2.5-7.5%) were optimized. And in the second phase, the effect of two fiber types (steel brass-plated and basalt) was investigated on the SCC optimized with the optimum CB as disperse reinforcement at 6 different ratios of 1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0% by weight of mix for each type. In this study, the theoretical principles of the synthesis of self-compacting dispersion-reinforced concrete have been developed which consists of optimizing structure-formation processes through the use of a mineral modifier, together with ground crushed cement in a vario-planetary mill to a specific surface area of 550 m2 / kg. The amorphous silica in the modifier composition intensifies the binding of calcium hydroxide formed during the hydration of C3S, helps reduce the basicity of the cement-composite, while reducing the growth of portlandite crystals. Limestone particles contribute to the formation of calcium hydrocarbonate and, together with fine ground quartz sand; act as microfiller, clogging the pores of the cement. Furthermore, the results revealed that the effect of fiber addition improves the mechanical properties of FRSCC. It was found that the steel fiber performed better than basalt fiber on tensile strength and modulus of elasticity; however, both fibers have the same performance on the first crack strength and sample destruction of FRSCC. It also illustrates that there will be an optimum percentage of fiber addition.

This study investigated the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) wall-slab frames with masonry infills. Four RC wall-slab frames with or without masonry infill were tested under cyclic loading. The RC frames were composed of in-plane and out-of-plane walls and top and bottom slabs. For masonry infill walls, cement bricks were stacked applying mortar paste only at the bed joints, and, at the top, a gap of 50 mm was intentionally left between the masonry wall and top RC slab. Both sides of the masonry walls were finished by applying ordinary or fiber-reinforced mortars. The tests showed that despite the gap on top of the masonry walls, the strength and stiffness of the infilled frames were significantly increased and were different depending on the direction of loading and the finishing mortars. During repeated loading, the masonry walls underwent horizontal and diagonal cracking and corner crushing/spalling, showing a rocking mode inside the RC wall-slab frame. Interestingly, this rocking mode delayed loss of strength, and as a result, the ductility of the infilled frames increased to the same level as the bare frame. The interaction of masonry infill and adjacent RC walls, depending on the direction of loading, was further investigated based on test observations.

A vast amount of experimental and analytical research has been conducted related to the seismic behavior and performance of concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) columns. This research has resulted in a wealth of information on the component behavior. However, analytical and experimental data for structural systems with CFT columns is limited, and the well-known behavior of steel or concrete structures is assumed valid for designing these systems. This paper presents the development of an analytical model for nonlinear analysis of composite moment resisting frame (CFT-MRF) systems with CFT columns and steel wide-flange (WF) beams under seismic loading. The model integrates component models for steel WF beams, CFT columns, connections between CFT columns and WF beams, and CFT panel zones. These component models account for nonlinear behavior due to steel yielding and local buckling in the beams and columns, concrete cracking and crushing in the columns, and yielding of panel zones and connections. Component tests were used to validate the component models. The model for a CFT-MRF considers second order geometric effects from the gravity load bearing system using a lean-on column. The experimental results from the testing of a four-story CFT-MRF test structure are used as a benchmark to validate the modeling procedure. An analytical model of the test structure was created using the modeling procedure and imposed-displacement analyses were used to reproduce the tests with the analytical model of the test structure. Good agreement was found at the global and local level. The model reproduced reasonably well the story shear-story drift response as well as the column, beam and connection moment-rotation response, but overpredicted the inelastic deformation of the panel zone.

A high-performance reactive powder concrete (RPC) has been readied alongside river sand, with 1.25 mm particle size when under the condition of 80C steam curing. As a heat and sound insulation, expanded perlite aggregate (EPA) provides economic advantages in building. Concrete containing EPA is examined in terms of cement types (CEM II 32.5R and CEM I 42.5R), doses (0, 2%, 4% and 6%) as well as replacement rates in this research study. The compressive and density of concrete were used in the testing. At the end of the 28-day period, destructive and nondestructive tests were performed on cube specimens of 150 mm150 mm150 mm. The concrete density is not decreased with the addition of more perlite (from 45 to 60 percent), since the enlarged perlite has a very low barrier to crushing. To get a homogenous and fluid concrete mix, longer mixing times for all the mix components are necessary due to the higher amount of perlite. As a result, it is not suggested to use greater volumes of this aggregate in RPC. In the presence of de-icing salt, the lightweight RPC exhibits excellent freeze-thaw resistance (mass is less than 0.2 kg/m2). The addition of perlite strengthens the aggregate-matrix contact, but there is no apparent ITZ. An increased compressive strength was seen in concretes containing expanded perlite powder and steel fibers with good performance.
The plastic stress distribution method and the strain compatibility method are the two representative methods to calculate the P-M interaction strength of RCFT (rectangular concrete filled tube) columns. The plastic stress distribution method is approximate while the stress compatibility method should approach the exact solution if accurate constitutive relations of the materials involved are used. Recent study by the authors pointed out that, because of lack of accurate constitutive model for the concrete confined by the rectangular steel tube, no strain compatibility method according to the current structural provisions provides a satisfactory prediction of the P-M interaction strength of RCFT columns under various material combinations. An empirical constitutive model which can capture the stress-strain characteristics of the confined concrete of RCFT columns is proposed based on analyzing extensive exisitng test database. The key idea was to define the concrete crushing strain as a function of steel-to-concrete strength ratio and width-to-thickness ratio of steel tube. It was shown that the proposed model leads to more accurate and more consistent prediction of the P-M interaction strength of RCFT columns under general design conditions.

This paper presents a mathematical model derived from the upper-bound theorem of concrete plasticity to rationally evaluate the shear friction strength of concrete interfaces with a construction joint. The upper limit of the shear friction strength was formulated from the limit state of concrete crushing failure on the strut-and-tie action along the construction joints to avoid overestimating the shear transfer capacity of a transverse reinforcement with a high clamping force. The present model approach proposed that the cohesion and coefficient of friction of concrete can be set to be $0.27(f_{ck})^{0.65}$ and 0.95, respectively, for rough construction joints and $0.11(f_{ck})^{0.65}$ and 0.64, respectively, for smooth ones, where $f_{ck}$ is the compressive strength of concrete. From the comparisons with 155 data compiled from the available literature, the proposed model gave lower values of standard deviation and coefficient of variation of the ratios between predictions and experiments than AASHTO and fib 2010 equations, indicating that the proposed model has consistent trends with test results, unlike the significant underestimation results of such code equations in evaluating the shear friction strength.

This study intended to manufacture high quality cement, such as solving the quality problem of cement which has been emerging recently, along with improving grinding efficiency. To this end, the synthesis of melamine-functional pulverizing agents and the physical properties of cement applying them were reviewed and the reaction was carried out by dividing the melamine airborne compound into three stages of polymerization using methylation, sulfonation, and acid catalyst to improve the crushing efficiency of cement clinker and the physical properties of manufactured cement. The obtained melamine type copolymer was applied to the grinding process of cement clinker. And it's grinding efficiency and compressive strength were compared with DEG(diethylene glycol) and TIPA(triisopropanol amine). When it comes to the grinding efficiency, by lowering surface energy with stable adsorption from organic polymer to cement particles, the fineness showed 4-6% up. In the meantime, the compression strength hiked 30% from its initial strength compared to the conventional DEG. At the age of 28days, the strength showed approximately 13% improvement. Therefore, it is confirmed that the overall quality has been elevated in comparison with the conventional one.

The failure mode of concrete reinforced with FRP is defined as the concrete crushing and the fiber rupture and the definition of limit state is a slightly different according to the design methods. It is relatively difficult to predict of FRP reinforced concrete because the mechanical properties of fibers are quite depending on its of fibers. The design code by ACI440 committee, which has been developed mainly on GFRP having low modulus of elasticity, is widely used, but the applicability on other FRPs of this code has not been sufficiently verified. In addition, the ultimate and serviceability limit state based on the ACI440 are comparatively difficult to predict the behavior of member with the 0.8~1.2 𝜌b because crushing and rupturing failure can be occurred simultaneously is in this region of reinforcement ratio, and predicted deflection is too sensitive according to the loading condition. Therefore, in this study, reliability and convenience of the prediction of structural performance by design methods such as ACI440 and MC90 concept, respectively, were examined through the experimental results and literature review of the beam and slab with the reinforcement ratio of 0.8 ~ 1.4. As a result of the analysis, it can be applied to the FRP reinforced structure in the case of the simple moment-curvature formula (LIM-MC) of Model Code, and the limit state design method based on the EC2 is more reliable than the ultimate strength design method.
