A Study on the Evaluation Index of Crown Height given Marine Environmental Factors and Ship Characteristics (해상 환경 및 선박 특성을 반영한 마루높이 평가지표에 관한 연구)

  • Korea has recently selected twenty-two ports for reinforcement breakwater installation of protection facilities, due to rise sea level caused by global warming and increase in the number of typhoon and tsunami. In addition, due to consistent enlargement of ship size, dredging for depth of water for large vessel's berthing and enlargement of berth is under construction. However, no definite construction plan for the reinforcement and lengthening of crown height, which has close relationship with the safe mooring of ships. In this study, domestic and foreign design criteria of crown height were analyzed, and the crown height evaluation index and evaluation method were developed by dividing it into environment and ship elements. In particular, in the case of ship evaluation index, each step was set up in 4 steps according to domestic and foreign regulations, weighted by each step, and the safety level of crown height was evaluated. As a result of the mooring safety simulation of the 100,000 ton cruise ship, the appropriate minimum crown height standard was derived to be 3 m above A.H.H.W. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data to propose the crown height standard reflecting ship characteristics.

  • On January 13th 2012 Italian flag Costa Concordia was partly sunk. The ship was carrying 4,252 passengers and crew; in the next few days the bodies of 30 people were found. Two are still missing. Two South Korean passengers and an Italian crew member was rescued from the ship on January 15th, more than 24 hours after the accident. As of June 18th 2012 (The date of presentation) around 32 people had not been accounted for. In this paper, it is viewed and pointed out the cause, problem, and implication for the future. As a result, intelligent innovative evacuation system for the VLPS (Very Large Passenger Ship) should be set up in terms of international maritime safety.

  • Passenger casualties in the case of ship accidents have increased because of the increase in size and complexity of current ships (such as cruise ships). Therefore, in recent years, emergency evacuation systems are receiving increased interest so as to ensure the safety of passengers. Currently, there are only basic instructions provided, such as announcements regarding the situation, alarms, and exit signs; however, no guidance toward a proper escape route has yet been provided. To solve this problem, several emergency guiding schemes have been proposed. However, these systems ignore some of the realities of ship accidents and are impractical because various risk factors are not considered. Therefore, this paper proposes an optimal route guiding system based on an $A^*$ algorithm for emergency escape during disaster situations. This system takes into account various possible risk factors. Performance evaluation using computer simulations showed that the proposed scheme is effective and leads to safe escape routes.

Efficient Handover Scheme for a Peer-to-Peer Download Service on Board (선박 내 Peer-to-Peer 다운로드 서비스를 위한 효율적인 핸드오버 기법)

  • Internet traffic is rapidly increasing due to the spread of personal smart devices and the demand for multimedia contents. When designing a large ship such as cruise, network architecture is also considered which supports various IT services in a maritime environment similar to the ground environment. In this paper, we consider wireless P2P (peer-to-peer) communication for efficient multimedia content sharing and propose novel handover scheme for efficient download service. The proposed handover method shows that it can improve the download symbol rates for handover in a wireless P2P system considering the signal strength and quality of peers as well. The proposed system is expected to provide efficient contents distribution and reliable communication in the ship-area-network (SAN).

Rescue Support Communication System in Case of Emergency of Large Passenger Ship (대형 여객선 긴급 재난 시 구조 지원 통신 시스템)

  • We propose an emergency rescue support communication system to quickly rescue passenger ships, such as large cruise ships, when a ship sinks or a disaster such as a fire occurs. A beacon is installed in the inside of the vessel, and the position and the status of the passenger are detected in real time through the Bluetooth communication in the mobile terminal carried by the passenger and transmitted to the server. When an emergency occurs, the server sends information on the passenger to the rescue agency, informs the passenger of the emergency, and guides evacuation. As a result of simulations using the designed system, it was confirmed that the server immediately notifies all terminals when an emergency occurred in more than half of the area. This system, which detects the accident in real time and notifies all terminals in the vessel, unlike the existing system that notifies the position of the accident vessel or simply the position of the passenger in the vessel, will be helpful for the rapid evacuation and rescue of the passenger.

  • Yacht have an high powered main engine relatively light hull, so the noise generated from the engine have a bad influence upon the crew and passenger. Recently, cruise yacht is made an attempt by domestic production skill, however the insulation skill of the noise made by the main engine is not satisfy the real purchasing power of the buyer. Like this, yacht cabin's noise level is becoming the barometer to decide the purchase. the method to insufficient. However, if we use the skill of the monitoring equipment and the genetic algorithm system, the circumference of the main engine can be enclosed by an high quality absorbtion wall and the noise levels of the cabins are improved. In this study, the sound absorbtion barrier is experimentally researched by change the volume and the length of the neck for the Helmholtz resonator as the resonator can absorb the noise effectively.

  • Recently, electric propulsion systems are been increasingly used in large cruise ships and merchant vessels. When abnormal electrical conditions occur in the motor of an electric propulsion ship, they can cause serious damage to the motor and propeller shaft. Research on abnormal conditions of propulsion motors used in electric propulsion vessels and electric ships difficult to find. In this study, a mathematical model of the electric propulsion system is proposed to analyze transient phenomena that occur in the case of electric propulsion motor or propeller shaft malfunction. A synchronous motor was used in the MATLAB computer simulation of this study. In the event of electrical malfunction of the electric propulsion motor at rated operation, over current occurs in the condition of 1 phase ground, over torque occurs at 3 and 2 phases ground and over current and torque occur when exciting power fails at rated operation.

Analysis of Sound Insulation Performance of Honeycomb Composite Panels for Cruise Ships (크루즈선박용 허니컴 패널의 차음 성능 해석)

  • In this paper, the interface matrix of honeycomb composite panel has been derived by the governing equation of a honeycomb sandwich panel. The interface matrix of honeycomb panel is added to the previously developed transfer matrix method, thus analysis of the multi-layered insulation composite panel with honeycomb is accomplished. Furthermore, predictions of sound transmission loss(STL) for the ship's insulation panel with honeycomb and mineral wool are presented. The insulation performance of the honeycomb used for skin of the ship's insulation panel is better than that of 0.35 mm steel panel by 2dB, approximately. Although honeycomb panel has inefficient insulation performance beside steel panel, honeycomb panel achieve improvements in the performance of weight reduction. The surface density of the panel with honeycomb is rather than with steel by $5.2kg/m^2$. It is decrease in weight by 31.7 %.

A Study on Decision of Minimum Required Channel Width Considering Ship Types by Fast Time Simulation (배속 시뮬레이션 기반의 선종별 최소 항로 폭에 관한 연구)

  • Waterway design should prioritize appropriate channel width to ensure preferential safe passage for the arrival and departure of vessels. To calculate the minimum channel width required for safe passage a comprehensive review of several factors is required. These factors include vessel maneuverability, determined by vessel size, type and speed; environmental factors such as wind, tide, and wave action; human factors, including personal experience and operator judgment as well as marine traffic and navigation support facilities for decision making. However, the Korean channel width design standard is based only on vessel length, and requires improvement when compared with the standards of PIANC, USA, and Japan. This study aims to estimate the appropriate channel width required for one-way traffic in a straight channel, considering various vessel and environmental factors, using Fast Time Simulation (FTS). When the wind speed is 25 knots, with a current speed of 2 knots and a normal vessel speed of 10 knots FTS shows that a 150K GT Cruise Ship requires a minimum channel width of 0.67-0.91 the vessel length (L), whereas a 120K TEU Container Ship and a 300K DWT VLCC require 0.79-1.17 and 1.02-1.59, respectively. Such results can be used to calculate the minimum channel width required for safe passage as an improved Korean design standard.

  • In the worst maritime accidents, people should abandon ship, but ship structures are narrow and complex and operation takes place on rough seas, so escape is not easy. In particular, passengers on cruise ships are untrained and varied, making evacuation prospects worse. In such a case, the evacuation management of the crew plays a very important role. If a rescuer enters a ship at distress and conducts rescue activities, which zones represent the most effective entry should be examined. Generally, crew and rescuers take the shortest route, but if an accident occurs along the shortest route, it is necessary to select the second-best alternative. To solve this situation, this study aims to calculate evacuation routes using Q-Learning of Reinforcement Learning, which is a machine learning technique. Reinforcement learning is one of the most important functions of artificial intelligence and is currently used in many fields. Most evacuation analysis programs developed so far use the shortest path search method. For this reason, this study explored optimal paths using reinforcement learning. In the future, machine learning techniques will be applicable to various marine-related industries for such purposes as the selection of optimal routes for autonomous vessels and risk avoidance.
