A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE ANGLES BETWEEN CROWN AXIS AND ROOT AXIS IN MESIODISTAL DIRECTION BY USING ORTHOPANTOMOGRAM

  • Orthopantomogram is commonly used to evaluate root parallelism. "Good parallelism" between roots is widely accepted as one of the guidelines of a successful orthodontic treatment. In case there was a large angle between crown axis and root axis, and if we valued only the position of crown in establishing occlusal relationship without considering of the situation of root, the problem of root arrangement between adjacent teeth would be occurred. The estimate of root parallelism in mesiodistal direction before and after orthodontic treatment must be emphasized. The intent of this study was to determine the clinical importance and correlation of the angle between crown axis and root axis. Orthopantomograms of 105 orthodontic patients being treated in Yonsei university were used in this study. Twenty-eight teeth in both maxilla and mandible were selected and analyzed quantitively to evaluate the angle between crown axis and root axis, and obtain the correlationship among the individual teeth. The results are as follows: 1. Among the teeth presenting normal distribution, the maxillary right canine showed the largest mean value( $5.73{\pm}4.42^{\circ}$), which was composed of the crown-root angles, and the mandibular left lateral incisor showed the smallest mean value( $0.60{\pm}3.76^{\circ}$). 2. The crown-root angles of the maxillary incisors and the first molars, and the mandibular central incisors and the first molars didn't show normal distribution and the ranges of these angles were dispersed. 3. Significant differences were present between the crown axis and the root axis except for lower first premolars. (p<0.05) 4. No significant difference was present for the crown-root angle between right and left side, (p<0.05) 5. No significant difference was present for the crown-root angle between male and female except for lower left first premolar. (p<0.05) 6. In the upper right quadrant, significant correlations were present between crown-root angles of the central incisor and lateral incisor, lateral incisor and canine. In the upper left quadrant, significant correlations were present between crown-root angles of the central incisor and lateral incisor. In the lower right quadrant, significant correlations were present between crown-root angles of the central incisor and lateral incisor, first molar and second molar. In the lower left quadrant, significant correlations were present between crown-root angles of the central incisor and lateral incisor, lateral incisor and canine, first molar and second molar. Volume difference in upper central incisor preparation according to the changes of restorative design and marginal location (상악 중절치 삭제 시 수복 디자인과 변연부 위치에 따른 부피 변화)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the volumetric change of teeth after preparation for various designs and margin locations through Micro CT analysis (Skyscan 1076: SKYSCAN, Konitch, Belgium). Materials and methods: The 36 artificial teeth were used to determine reduction volume of upper central incisor. According to the restorative design these 36 teeth were divided into 4 groups and according to the marginal location each group was divided into 3 subgroups. The volume of unprepared teeth was obtained by using Micro CT and the volume of prepared teeth was obtained in the same method. The CT scanned images before and after preparation were superimposed. Results: The volume difference was significantly increased as follows: traditional laminate veneer < full laminate veneer < all ceramic crown < metal ceramic crown. One-way ANOVA and Tukey multiple comparison analyses were used to analyze the data in this study. In each group the volume difference was significantly increased as follows: 1 mm above CEJ < CEJ < 1 mm below CEJ (P<.05). The % volume difference of all ceramic crown and metal ceramic crown was 31 - 48% and that of laminate veneer was 14 - 30%. The volume difference of the traditional laminate veneer was 1/3 of that of metal ceramic crown. The full laminate (1 mm below CEJ) and all ceramic crown (1 mm above CEJ) showed a similar volume difference. Metal ceramic crown showed 13.7% more volume difference than all ceramic crown. Conclusion: There exists the difference in volumetric change according to designs of restoration and margin locations of preparation.

A study on the production environment of crown prosthesis for National Health Insurance benefit (건강보험 급여화 관련 크라운보철물 제작실태 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the production environment of crown prosthesis for National Health Insurance(NHI) benefit. Methods: This study carried out self-administered questionnaire survey from September 1, 2016 to October 31 by having research subjects as 261 dental technician. Except 100 copies with incomplete response, 161 copies were used as the materials of final analysis. Results: Unlike gold crowns, the material cost of metal crowns was paid at the dental laboratory(86.3%). Total material consumption for making metal crown was more than gold crown(63.4%), especially for the finishing and polishing processes(78.3%). The subjects responded that a routine dental laboratory fee of crown prosthesis is unreasonable, and it is necessary to adjust and improve it(metal crown 96.2%, gold crown 96.9%). NHI coverage dental prosthesis was not marked on the order form(46.0%), and the dental laboratory fee of that was nor received(64.0%). Conclusion : It is necessary to estimate the NHI cost level of the crown prosthesis by reflecting the production environment and engineering process in dental laboratories. In addition, institutional arrangement should be backed up so that dental laboratories can receive appropriate dental laboratory fee.

FRACTURE STRENGTH OF ZIRCONIA MONOLITHIC CROWNS (지르코니아 단일구조 전부도재관의 파절강도)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the fracture strength of the zirconia monolithic all-ceramic crowns according to the thickness(0.5 mm, 0.8 mm, 1.1 mm) and IPS Empress II ceramic crown of 1.5 mm thickness. Material and method: Eight crowns for each of 3 zirconia crown groups were fabricated using CAD/CAM system(Kavo, Germany) and eight Empress II crowns were made from silicone mold and wax pattern. Each crown group was finished in accordance with the specific manufacturer s instruction. All crowns were luted to the metal dies using resin cement and mounted on the testing jig in a universal testing machine. The load was directed at the center of crown with perpendicular to the long axis of each specimen until catastrophic failure occurred. Analysis of variance and Tukey multiple comparison test(p<.05) were applied to the data. Results and Conclusion: 1. The fracture strength of the zirconia monolithic all-ceramic crown was higher thickness increased(p<.05). 2 The fracture strength of 1.1 mm thickness zirconia monolithic all-ceramic crown was higher than the fracture strength of 1.5 mm thickness IPS Empress II crown(p<.05). 3. The fracture strength of 0.5 mm thickness zirconia monolithic all-ceramic crown exceeded maximum occlusal forces.

Growth and Yield as Affected by Controlled Crowns of the New Ever-bearing Strawberry 'Goha' in Highlands (신품종 사계성 딸기 '고하'의 고랭지 여름재배 시 관부수와 화방제거에 따른 생육 및 수량)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of crown numbers on growth and yield of ever-bearing strawberry (Fragaria ${\times}$ ananassa Duch.) 'Goha' cultivar. Strawberry seedlings were planted with $55{\times}30cm$ distance on April 29, and the randomized block experimental was designed by putting the crown numbers by 1, 3, 5 and crown-unremoved as the control. At the early growth stage, as the numbers of crown decreased, the size of leaf became larger and inflorescence diameter became thicker. Plant height became higher as the number of crown increased at the final harvesting time. Fresh weight of crown-unremoved plants was 118 g, showing 77.2 g higher than that of plants with one crown. Numbers of the developed inflorescence of plants with five crowns and crown-unremoved was 20.1, whereas 6.8 of plants with one crown, resulted in 13.3 more crowns. However, crown number did not significantly affect the fruit quality. As the crown number increased, the average fruit weight was lighter and the marketable fruit rate was shown to decrease significantly. The marketable yield of crown-unremoved plants was $17,372kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$, showing 68% higher than plants with one crown. Therefore, crown management without thinning crowns was recommended and inflorescence thickness less than 3 mm should be removed for successful production of ever-bearing strawberry 'Goha' cultivar during summer season.

Studies on Ion-Selective Crown Ether Dyes (이온선택성 크라운 에테르 염료에 관한 연구)

  • New crown ether dye-Ⅰ and dye-Ⅱ having an azo group(-N=N-) were synthesized from monobenzo-15-crown-5 and dibenzo-18-crown-6. These dyes showed ${\lambda}_{max}$ of 377 and 383nm respectively. The complexes of alkali metal ions ($Na^+$, $K^+$, $Cs^+$) with dye ligands showed band shift (390~400nm) and intensity increased. For a given anion, the extraction constants are in the order of $K^+$ < $Cs^+$ < $Na^+$ for dye-Ⅰ and $Cs^+$ < $Na^+$ < $K^+$ for dye-Ⅱ. These results show that the selectivity of crown ethers toward the alkali metal ions is dependant on the charge density of cation and the size of crown ether cavity. For a given cation, the order of the extraction constant is $Cl^-$ < $Br^-$ < $I^-$ < picrate. This order coincides with the degree of anion solvation effect.

EFFECT OF TAPER AND SURFACE AREA OF INNER CROWN ON THE RETENTIVE FORCE OF ELECTROFORMED OUTER CROWN (전기성형술로 제작된 외관의 유지력에 내관의 축면경사도와 표면적이 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: With gold electroforming system fir the double crown, the secondary crown is electroformed directly onto the primary crown. An even thick layer of high precision can be acquired. It is thought that the retention of electroformed outer crown is primarily acquired by the adhesive force (surface tension) through the saliva which is interposed between precisely fitted inner and outer crown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of taper and surface area of inner crown on the retentive force of electroformed outer crown according to the presence of saliva. Materials and methods: 32 titanium inner crowns with cervical diameter of 8 mm and cone angles of 0, 2, 4, 6 degrees, which had same surface area by regulated height, were machined on a lathe. Another 32 titanium inner crowns with cone angles of 0, 2, 4, 6 degrees, which had doubled surface area by increased cervical diameter. were fabricated. Eight specimens of each group, for a total of 64 titanium inner crowns, were prepared. The electroformed outer crowns were fabricated directly on the inner crowns by using electroforming machine(GAMMAT free, Gramm Technik, Germany). The tertiary frameworks were waxed-up on the electroformed outer crown and cast using nonprecious alloy($Rexillium^(R)III,\;Jeneric^(R)/Pentronh^(R)$ Inc., USA). The cast metal frameworks were sandblasted with alubimium oxides and cemented using resin cement(Superbond C&B, Sun Medical Co., Japan) over the electroformed copings of each specimen. Then, artificial saliva($Taliva^(R)$, Halim Pharm. Co., Korea) was sprayed between the inner and outer crown, and they were connected under 5 kg force. The retentive force was measured by the universal testing machine(Tinius Olsen 1000, Tinius Olsen, USA) with a cross-head speed of 66.67 mm/sec. The direction of cross-head travel was exactly aligned with the path of removal of the respective specimens. This measurement procedures for retentive force of electroformed outer crown with artificial saliva were repeated in the same way without presence of artificial saliva. Results and Conclusion: The following conclusions were drawn: 1. The retentive force of electroformed outer crown was decreased according to increased taper of inner crown(P<.05). 2. The retentive force of electroformed outer crown showed no significant differences according to surface area and the presence of artificial saliva(P>.05).

The stress analysis of supporting tissues according to crown restorative materials in Brånemark osseointegrated implant (Brånemark 골유착성 매식체의 금관 수복재료에 따른 지지조직의 응력분석)

  • This study was to analyze the stress distribution of implant and supporting tissue in $Br{\aa}nemark$ osseointegration implant. The analysis has been conducted by using the axisymmetric finite element method and type of model according to crown material. Tests have been performed at 1 kg load on central fossa of crown portion. Each type of model was designed differently according to crown material. 1) Porcelain fused to metal crown(Model A) 2) Composite resin veneered crown(Model B) 3) Acrylic resin veneered crown(Model C) 4) Type III gold crown(Model D) The displacements and stresses of implant and supporting structures were analyzed to investigate the influence of the type of crown material. The results were obtained as follows : 1. Displacement of implant was shown uniformly downward displacement in all models and abutments were observed distally downward displacement. 2. In supporting tissues, stress was concentrated on the crest of compact bone and the spongy bone below implant. 3. The PFM and the type III gold crown showed the largest concentration of stress at the crest of compact bone and the spongy bone below implant, respectively. Acrylic resin artificial teeth and composite resin veneered crown indicated almost the same distribution of stress. 4. The gold screw, the abutment screw and the top of abutment showed the concentration of stress in implants of every model.

Crown Fuel Characteristics of Japanese Red Pine (Pinus densiflora) in Mt. Palgong, Daegu (대구 팔공산 지역의 소나무 수관층 연료 특성)

  • Crown fuel characteristics such as crown bulk density, crown base height, and fuel moisture content of Japanese red pine were analyzed. Ten trees in Mt. Palgong at Daegu, were destructively sampled and their crown fuels were weighed separately for each fuel category. Fuel content of live and dead crown component were 53%, and 15.3%, respectively. Foliar moisture content was 56%. Needles and twigs with diameter less than 1cm diameter accounted for 16.2%, 55% of total and crown fuel load. Average crown bulk density of Japanese red pine was 0.24 kg/$m^3$, effective crown fuel bulk density was 0.1325 kg/$m^3$.

Ceramic molar crown reproducibility by digital workflow manufacturing: An in vitro study

  • PURPOSE. This in vitro study aimed to analyze and compare the reproducibility of zirconia and lithium disilicate crowns manufactured by digital workflow. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A typodont model with a prepped upper first molar was set in a phantom head, and a digital impression was obtained with a video intraoral scanner (CEREC Omnicam; Sirona GmbH), from which a single crown was designed and manufactured with CAD/CAM into a zirconia crown and lithium disilicate crown (n=12). Reproducibility of each crown was quantitatively retrieved by superimposing the digitized data of the crown in 3D inspection software, and differences were graphically mapped in color. Areas with large differences were analyzed with digital microscopy. Mean quadratic deviations (RMS) quantitatively obtained from each ceramic group were statistically analyzed with Student's t-test (${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. The RMS value of lithium disilicate crown was $29.2\;(4.1){\mu}m$ and $17.6\;(5.5){\mu}m$ on the outer and inner surfaces, respectively, whereas these values were $18.6\;(2.0){\mu}m$ and $20.6\;(5.1){\mu}m$ for the zirconia crown. Reproducibility of zirconia and lithium disilicate crowns had a statistically significant difference only on the outer surface (P<.001). The outer surface of lithium disilicate crown showed over-contouring on the buccal surface and under-contouring on the inner occlusal surface. The outer surface of zirconia crown showed both over- and under-contouring on the buccal surface, and the inner surface showed under-contouring in the marginal areas. CONCLUSION. Restoration manufacturing by digital workflow will enhance the reproducibility of zirconia single crowns more than that of lithium disilicate single crowns.
