Effectiveness of an extraoral cold and vibrating device in reducing pain perception during deposition of local anesthesia in pediatric patients aged 3-12 years: a split-mouth crossover study

  • Background: Local anesthetic injections may induce pain in children, leading to fear and anxiety during subsequent visits. Among the various approaches recommended to reduce pain, one is the use of a Buzzy BeeTM device that operates on the concept of gate control theory and distraction. The literature regarding its effectiveness during the deposition of local anesthesia remains limited; hence, the aim of the present study was to determine the efficacy of extraoral cold and vibrating devices in reducing pain perception during the deposition of local anesthesia. Methods: A split-mouth crossover study in which 40 children aged 3-12 years requiring maxillary infiltration or inferior alveolar nerve block for extractions or pulp therapy in the maxillary or mandibular posterior teeth were included. The control intervention involved the application of topical anesthetic gel for one minute (5% lignocaine gel), followed by the administration of local anesthetic (2% lignocaine with 1:80,000 adrenaline) at a rate of 1 ml/ minute. Along with the control protocol, the test intervention involved using the Buzzy BeeTM device for 2 minutes before and during the deposition of the local anesthetic injection. The heart rate and face, legs, arms, cry, and consolability revised (FLACC-R) scale scores were recorded by the dentist to assess the child's pain perception. Results: The mean age of the participants in Group A and Group B was 7.050 ± 3.12 years and 7.9 ± 2.65 years respectively. A reduction in the mean heart rate and FLACC-R score was observed during the deposition of local anesthetic solution in the tissues when the Buzzy BeeTM was used in both groups at different visits in the same subjects (P < 0.05) The Buzzy BeeTM device was effective in reducing the heart rate and FLACC-R scores when used during maxillary infiltration and inferior alveolar nerve block local anesthesia techniques (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The use of extraoral cold and vibrating devices significantly reduces pain perception during local anesthetic deposition in pediatric patients. Considering the results of this study, the device may be incorporated as an adjunct in routine dental practice while administering local anesthesia in children.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to review the recent trends in the clinical trial studies that have been published since 2004. Methods : We reviewed the Medline & Pubmedcentral databases by using searching word of "acupuncture". Then 20 articles were selected within total 803 articles. In oriental medicine journals in Korea, we investigated 6 journals represented Korean Oriental medicine and chose 13 articles. Results & Conclusions : 1. We found 33 articles in journals. 2. The patterns of study were as follows: Randomized Controlled Trials(18), Single case series clinical study(9), Case-Control clinical study(4), Randomized crossover Trial(1) and Prospective Clinical analysis(1). 3. The fields of study were as follows: Combined anxiety, depression & other psychiatic symptoms(18), Stress & heart rate variablity(5), The single study of anxiety(5), The single study of depression(3), Stress & pupil variablity(1), Stress and heart rate & pupil variablity(1). 4. The methods of acupuncture were as follows: Acupuncture on points of 14 meridians(24), Auricular acupuncture(3), Electro acupuncture(2) and Both Auricular & Electro acupuncture(1). 5. Stomach meridian(足陽明胃經) and ST36(足三里) were used mostly.

Influence of Smokers's Jogging Exercises on Cardiopulmonary Function of Normal Adults in Their Twenties (20대 성인 흡연자의 조깅운동이 심장호흡기능에 미치는 영향)

  • Background and Purpose : Effects of smokers's jogging exercises on oxygen uptake, ventilation, heart rate, and vital-capacity of normal adults have not been studied in details on. In this study, people that had completed the established jogging exercises was selected for the study. We could examine the effects of imposed jogging in smokers who might be considered by an experienced physical therapist to be well practiced and proficient in this exercises. Subjects and Methods : A total number of 24 young healthy subjects participated in a randomized crossover controlled study and completed the study. The subjects of this study were divided into jogging and controlled groups which were composed 14 people respectively. The members of exercise group had jogging exercises 50 minutes a day, five times a week, for 5 weeks in same conditions, otherwise controlled group did not. Results : The results of this study were as follows. The jogging group demonstrated significant increases in cardiopulmonary function, vital-capacity and exercise capacity, compared with control group, which demonstrated no change in baseline measurements of 5 weeks. Conclusion : Jogging exercises can increase cardiopulmonary function in people after they have undergone successful PA. These results suggested that it was improved on cardiopulmonary function and lung capacity, since jogging exercise had. The results of this study could be applied for valuable criterion cardiopulmonary function. It is necessary to selects in various groups of the purpose of enhancing confidence in of this research.

Eurycoma longifolia Increases Sexual Motivation in Sexually Naive Male Rats

  • The aim of this study is to provide evidence on the aphrodisiac property of Eurycoma longifolia Jack. An electric grid was used as an obstruction in the electrical copula tion cage in order to determine how much an aversive stimulus the sexually naive male rat for both the treated with E. longifolia Jack and control groups were willing to overcome to reach the estrous receptive female in the goal cage. The intensity of the grid current was maintained at 0.12mA and this was the intensity in which the male rats in the control group failed to crossover to reach the goal cage. Results showed that E. longifolia Jack continued to enhance and also maintain a high level of both the total number of successful crossovers, mountings, intromissions and ejaculations during the 9-12 th week observation period. In conclusion, these results further enhanced and strenghtened the aphrodisiac property of E.longifolia Jack.

  • DMFC(Direct Methanol Fuel Cell) has been considered as an attractive option to produce electric power in many application. In this study, in order to estimate the effects of the methanol concentration, wind velocity and temperature on the performance of DMFC, a physical prototype of DMFC was designed and manufactured, and the stack voltage of DMFC was measured during the operation of DMFC. Expecially, the experimental results showed that a low stack temperature, a low wind velocity and an excess methanol concentration lead to the increase of the time to reach the maximum stack voltage.

의학연구에서 실험계획의 원리와 교차계획법

  • 실험은 과학적 사실을 규명하기 위한 적극적인 수단이다. 실험이란 문자 그대로 검정 (test)을 의미하는데 좀 더 공식적으로 표현하자면 '연구자가 어떤 체계(system) 혹은 과정 (process)속으로 의도하는 변화를 투입 변수 (input variable)로 넣었을 때 그 결과로 얻게되는 반응에서 어떠한 변화가 초래되었는지 그 원인을 찾아내는 일련의 검정(series of tests)'이라고 정의할 수 있다. 넓은 의미에서 볼 때 실험의 형태는 발생조사(outbreak investigation)와 같이 현장 (fidld)에서 진행되는 관찰연구 (observational study)와 실험실 연구로 대별된다. 어떠한 연구형태이든 실험의 객관성을 달성하기 위해서는 연구의 목적에 합당한 실험계획을 작성하는 것이 필수적이다. 아무리 완벽하게 실험을 수행했다고 하더라도 실험계획에서 심각한 문제가 있다면 그 결과에 대해서는 신뢰성을 부여할 수 없기 때문이다. 본 논문에서는 실험을 계획할 때 적용되는 원리와 분산분석에서의 다중비교 및 의학연구에서 활용빈도가 높은 교차계획법 (crossover design)에 대하여 소개하고자 한다.

Assembly sequence generation using genetic algorithm (유전자 알고리즘을 이용한 조립순서 추론)

  • An assembly sequence is considered to be optimal when it minimizes assembly cost while satisfying assembly constraints. to generate such sequences for robotic assembly, this paper proposes a method using a genetic algorithm (GA). This method denotes an assembly sequence as an individual, which is assigned a fitness related to the assembly cost. Then, a population consisting of a number of individuals evolves to the next generation through genetic operations of crossover and mutation based upon the fitness of the individuals. The population continues to repetitively evolve, and finally the fittest individual and its corresponding assembly sequence is found. Through case study for an electrical relay, the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated. Also, the performance is evaluated by-comparing with those of previously presented approaches such as a neural-netowork-based method and a simulated annealing method.

  • In this paper, we propose a "Distance Correlation Selection operator (DCS)" as a new selection operator. For Genetic Algorithm (GA), many improvements have been proposed. The MGG (Minimal Generation Gap) model proposed by Satoh et.al. shows good performance. The MGG model has all advantages of conventional models and the ability of avoiding the premature convergence and suppressing the evolutionary stagnation. The proposed method is an extension of selection operator in the original MGG model. Generally, GA has two types of selection operators, one is "selection for reproduction", and the other is "selection for survival"; the former is for crossover and the latter is the individuals which survive to the next generation. The proposed method is an extension of the former. The proposed method utilizes distance information between individuals. From this extension, the proposed method aims to expand a search area and improve ability to search solution. The performance of the proposed method is examined with several standard test functions. The experimental results show good performance better than the original MGG model.

  • Movie Films and Games, to be close to their industries, needs in crossover fields, are affected to each other. Interactive movie is an effective authoring method accommodating this trend on demands. However, studies which explore and examine various forms of Interactive effected films and storytelling approaches are scarce. This call for elucidation is basis of this research which applies the notion of Interactive movies and games to analyzing of trends and composition limits of Interactive movies, and improvised methodology of ability on merits for the next generation media cultures.

A Study on the Stabilization Control of IP System Using Evolving Neural Network (진화 신경망을 이용한 도립진자 시스템의 안정화 제어기에 관한 연구)

  • The stabilization control of inverted pendulum (IP) system is difficult because of its nonlinearity and structural unstability. In this paper, an Evolving Neural Network Controller (ENNC) without Error Back Propagation (EBP) is presented. An ENNC is described simply by genetic representation using an encoding strategy for types and slope values of each active functions, biases, weights and so on. By an evolutionary programming which has three genetic operation; selection, crossover and mutation, the predetermine controller is optimally evolved by updating simultaneously the connection patterns and weights of the neural networks. The performances of the proposed ENNC(PENNC)are compared with the one of conventional optimal controller and the conventional evolving neural network controller (CENNC) through the simulation and experimental results. And we showed that the finally optimized PENNC was very useful in the stabilization control of an IP system.
