  • Bifunctional silane (TESPD) is added into silica filled SBR compound and its effects with respect to the vulcanization properties, the processability, and the physical properties are investigated. The addition of the TESPD into silica filled SBR compound increases the degree of crosslinking by formation of a strong 3-dimensional network structure with silica surface via coupling reaction, which results in an improved mechanical property. It also improves the processabilities compared to the Control compound.

  • This paper studies on the behaviors of decomposition products from DCP according to various drying conditions of DCP. The decomposition products formed during crosslinking reaction have an harmful influence on XLPE. Especially explosive gases like methane which is one of decomposition products may cause explosion accident. We used the Gas Chromatography and Gas sensor for decomposition gases analysis, FT-IR for investigating the behaviors of decomposition products remained in XLPE.

  • Two kinds of new aliphatic diols were synthesized by the ring-opening reaction of lactide and glycolide with 1,4-butanediol, a difunctional initiator, in the presence of stannous octoate. The resulting aliphatic diols were melt-polymerized with D-tartaric acid at 150 ℃ to produce new crosslinkable polyesters. They were reacted with hexamethylene diisocyanate in THF at 65 ℃ in a teflon mold for 24 h to prepare sequentially ordered crosslinked polyesters (BD/LT/GL/D-tartarate). Degradation of the prepared yellow crosslinked films was carried out in a buffer solution in order to examine the effect of time, pH, temperature and crosslinking degree on their degradation rate and mechanism. The rate of degradation increased with an increase in pH and temperature, but it decreased with increasing degree of crosslinkage incorporated into the crosslinked polyesters. We also found that the crosslinked polymers were converted into the acidic compounds such as lactic, glycolic, and D-tartaric acids during the degradation.

  • Chemical crosslinking is the most widely used method for hydrogel preparations. We prepared a hydrogel using chitosan catechol/polyvinyl alcohol and sodium tetraborate decahydrate (Na2B4O7·10H2O). The formation of hydrogels often presents inconsistent results and issues according to the reaction scale. Therefore, we measured and analyzed the self-healing property and viscoelasticity of hydrogels attributed to scale-up synthesis using a rheometer.

  • Reactions between chlorinated or brominated poly(isobutylene-isoprene) (CIIR and BIIR, respectively) and 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane(MPS) were kinetically studied by gas chromatography in solution state. CIIR and BIIR were mixed with MPS and dibutyltin dilaurate as catalyst on roll mill and then the compounds were cured in hot water or atmosphere. From the gas chromatography, reaction order, activation energy, and frequency factor were determined. Crosslinking density and physical properties of moisture-cured CIIR and BIIR were measured. CIIR and BIIR were effectively moisture-cured and physical properties of these rubbers were comparatively good.

  • Interpenetrating polymer networks(IPNs) composed of castor oil(CO) polyurethane(PU) and epoxy resin were prepared by the simultaneous polymerization technique. Two types of PU were prepared using 1,4-butanediol(BD) and BD/trimethylolpropane(TMP) as a chain extending agent and crosslinking agent. The PU/epoxy based on BD as a chain extending agent showed more shift in the damping peak than PU/epoxy based on BD/TMP as the PU content was increased. BDPU/epoxy simultaneous interpenetrating polymer networks(SINs) had a better compatibility than BD/TMP-PU/epoxy SINs. For both systems, it was postulated that unique network formation of PU/epoxy SINs as a chain extending agent and crosslinking agent had occurred to a significant extent of phase mixing. The types of chain extender in the PU were found to be an important factor in determining the phase mixing of the IPNs. When the BD/TMP-PU reaction was faster than epoxy network, the extent of phase mixing was retarded by decreasing entanglement of networks. It was found that both PU/epoxy SINs provided enhanced flexural properties and fracture toughness, fracture surfaces of BDPU/epoxy and BD/TMP-PU/epoxy SINs showed the localized shear deformation and generation of stress whitening associated with the cavitation.

  • The crystallization behavior of irradiated polypropylene (PP) and the blend is an important parameter for polymer processing. Blends of PP/low density polyethylene (LDPE) with different LDPE contents were prepared by melt mixing in a twin screw extruder. The effect of the LDPE content on the irradiation effectiveness of the PP/LDPE blend with trimethylolpropane-trimetacrylate (TMPTMA) as a crosslinking co-agent was investigated in conjunction with the LDPE loading in the blend. The non-isothermal crystallization and crystal structure were measured by DSC, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and polarized optical microscopy (POM). A decrease in the melting temperature of PP was observed due to irradiation, which may be due to the PP chain scissioning effect of irradiation. The Ozawa component n represents a rod shaped, disc shaped and sphere-shaped geometry of the crystal if the value corresponds to 2, 3 and 4, respectively. Based on Ozawa analysis, the values of n were 3.8 and 2.3 for the pure PP and PP blends with 30 wt% LDPE, respectively. The fact that the crystal geometry of PP changed from spherical to disc and rod shaped was confirmed by Ozawa analysis and POM. The ${\beta}$ form XRD peak of the PP/LDPE blend at $16.1^{\circ}$ disappeared after irradiation due to the crosslinking reaction.

  • Crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes were prepared at various crosslinking temperatures using poly(acrylic acid-co-maleic acid) (PAM) containing different PAM contents. The thermal properties of these PVA/PAM membranes prepared at various reaction temperatures were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The proton conductivity and methanol permeability of PVA/PAM membranes were then investigated as PAM content was varied from 3 to 13 wt%. It was found that the proton and methanol transport were dependent on PAM content in their function both as crosslinking agent and as donor of hydrophilic -COOH groups. Both these properties decreased monotonously with increasing PAM concentration. The proton conductivities of these PVA/PAM membranes were in the range from $10^{-3}\;to\;10^{-2}S/cm$ and the methanol permeabilities from $10^{-7}\;to\;10^{-6}cm^{2}/sec$. In addition, the effect of operating temperature up to $80^{\circ}C$ on ion conductivity was examined for three selected membranes: 7, 9 and 11 wt% PAM membranes. Ion conductivity increased with increasing operating temperature and showed and S/cm at $80^{\circ}C$, respectively. The effects of crosslinking and ionomer group concentration were also examined in terms of water content, ion exchange capacity (IEC), and fixed ion concentration. In addition, the number of water molecules per ionomer site was calculated using both water contents and IEC values. With overall consideration for all the properties measured in this study, $7{\sim}9\;wt%$ PAM membrane prepared at $140^{\circ}C$ exhibited the best performance. These characteristics of PVA/PAM membranes are desirable in applications related to the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC).

  • Ultra high temperature treated (UHT) skim milk and colloidal calcium phosphate-free skim milk were treated with microbial transglutaminase (TGase), ultracentrifuged at various rates, lyophilized, and observed for morphological properties with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). UHT skim milk showed small holes of associated micelles at lower centrifugal rates, and became thick and irregular, and fine particles were associated regularly at higher centrifugal rates. When UHT skim milk with TGase was incubated for 1 hour, casein micelles aggregated and broadened as centrifugation rate increased. When UHT skim milk with TGase was incubated for 8 hours, casein micelles were associated irregularly to large aggregates and widened. Colloidal calcium phosphate-free skim milk with TGase incubated for 1 hour and separated by two-step centrifugation showed aggregated lump, while the milk incubated for 8 hours with TGase was associated with broadened, compact, and regular layers as the centrifugation rate increased. Such phenomena were caused by heat treatment, protein crosslinking reaction catalyzed by TGase and conformational changes of casein molecules, and could be dependent on reaction time, temperature and ultracentrifugation rate.

  • A graft copolymer consisting of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) backbone and poly(hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) side chains was synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Direct initiation of the secondary chlorines of PVC facilitates grafting of hydrophilic PHEA monomer. This graft copolymer, i.e. PVC-g-PHEA was cross-linked with sulfosuccinic acid (SA) via the esterification reaction between -OH of the graft copolymer and -COOH of SA, as confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy. Ion exchange capacity (IEC) continuously increased to 0.87meq/g with increasing concentrations of SA, due to the increasing portion of charged groups in the membrane. However, the water uptake increased up to 20.0wt% of SA concentration above which it decreased monotonically. The membrane also exhibited a maximum proton conductivity of 0.025 S/cm at 20.0 wt% of SA concentration, which is presumably due to competitive effect between the increase of ionic sites and the crosslinking reaction.
