Pervaporation Separation of MTBE-Methanol Mixtures Using PVA/PAA Crosslinked Membranes (가교된 PVA/PAA 막을 이용한 MTBE-Methanol 혼합물에 대한 투과증발분리)

  • Pervaporation separation of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and methanol (MeOH) mixture, of which the former compound is well known as the octane booster was carried out. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes crosslinked with poly(acrylic acid) which have been successfully applied on the water-alcohol mixtures were used in this study. The PVA/PAA ratio in the crosslinked membranes was 95/5, 90/10, 85/15, 80/20, and 75/25 by weight. The operating temperatures were 30, 40, and 50$\circ$C, and the compositions of MTBE and MeOH to be separated were 95/5, 90/10, and 80/20 (MTBE/MeOH) solutions. PVA/PAA=85/15 membrane showed the separation factor $\alpha_{MeOH/MTBE}$=4000 and the permeation rate of 10.1 g/m$^2$hr for MTBE/MeOH=80/20 solution at 50$\circ$. When the same membrane was used, the separation factor and permeation rate for MTBE/MeOH=90/10 solution at 40$\circ$C were $\alpha_{MeOH/MTBE}$=6000 and 8.5 g/m$^2$hr, respectively. Also, the hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance of the membranes would take an important role in the relationships between the membranes and separation performances in terms of the flux and the separation factor.

Wear Resistance of Crosslinked Ultra-high Molecular Weight Polyethylene (가교된 초고분자량 폴리에틸렌의 내마모성)

  • Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) was crosslinked in the melt state to enhance wear resistance, Dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and triallyl cyanurate (TAC) was used as a crosslinking agent and a promoter, respectively. With increasing amount of DCP and TAC used, gel content of crosslinked UHMWPE (XUMPE) increased, while the melting temperature, crystallizaiton temperature, crystallinity, and tensile properties decreased. The results of pin-on-disk wear test and ball-on-disk test with small applied load showed reduced wear volumes of XUMPE from that of the unmodified UHMWPE. As the wear mechanism effected in the experimental condition of this study was thought to be deformation rather than adhesion or fatigue, a new parameter, the ratio of maximum contact stress to yield stress, was proposed to correlate well with observed wear resistance. In ball-on-disk wear test with larger applied load, XUMPE showed higher wear volumes than that of the unmodified UHMWPE which were accompanied with increased friction coefficients and surface roughness of the wear tracks. When contact stress was well above yield stress, the failure of XUMPE, as well as deformation, was thought to be much accelerated.

  • The organic solvent robust polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes were prepared as organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membrane for the recycling of alcoholic solvents using non-solvent induced phase separation with different dope solution concentration and coagulant composition of water/ethanol mixtures to control the membrane morphology and permeation performance. Investigation on crosslinking of polybenzimidazole indicated that the membrane crosslinked with dibromoxylene (DBX) had enough mechanical strength and solvent resistance to be applied as a OSN membranes. The crosslinked PBI membrane prepared by more than 20wt% dope concentration coagulated in water showed a rejection of > 90% to Congo Red (MW of 696.66 g/mol) while pure ethanol permeances was more than 22.5 LMH/bar at 5 bar. Investigation on coagulant composition indicated that ethanol permeance through crosslinked PBI OSN membrane increased with increasing of ethanol concentration in water/ethanol mixture coagulants.

  • 5원환 고리아세탈 화합물인 4-methylenes(4,5)을 합성하고 저온조건 하에서 중합반응을 조사한 결과, 선택적인 개환중합이 일어났다. 보통의 양이온 개시제를 사용한 결과 $-78^{\circ}C$에서 가교체가 얻어졌으며, $CH_3SO_3H$를 개시제로 사용하면 같은 조건에서도 주사슬과 곁사슬에 이중결합을 가지는 개환중합체가 얻어진다. 이 중합체는 반응성을 가지는 불포화기를 포함하고 있으므로 prepolymer로써 널리 사용될 수 있다.

  • Poly(vinyl chloride) was modified by reacting with sodium N-methyldithiocarbamate or N-methyl-N-carboxymethyldithiocarbamate to obtain crosslinked dithiocarbamated PVC(PMD, PSDC). In addition PSDC were substituted with metal ions of $Ma^+, Li^+$ and $Cs^+$. PLMD and PSDC were reacted with copper ions in alcohol or aqueous solution to produce chelate complexes of dithiocarbanated PVC, respectively(PMD-$Cu^{2+}$, PSDC-$Cu^{2+}$). PSDC was irradiated by ultraviolet light to enhance crosslinking(PSDC-UV).

  • Effects of ionic impurities on the dielectric breakdown of the crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) were studied using aqueous electrolytes. It was found that the AC breakdown strength of XLPE decreases considerably when the ions are present in the electrodes composed of aqueous electrolyte. Details of results were described.

  • PVA membrane was widely used in the dehydration pervaporation process. PVA membrane showed remakable selectivity towed water and an excellent film-forming polymer, with a good resistance to orgamic solvents but it has poor stability in aqueous mixtures. Generally the PVA is manufactured by the hydrolysis reaction from poly vinyl acetate(PVAc) and so the degree of PVA hydrolysis is a major parameter for properties of PVA membrane such as the crystallinity and polarity.
