Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the status of tuberculosis (TB) infection control in hospitals. Method: This study was a cross-sectional descriptive study in which self-administered questionnaires were used to survey 77 hospitals. Data were collected from August 12 to September 15, 2012. Results: Only 27 institutions (35.1%) were monitoring patients infected with or suspected of having TB. Most hospitals were conducting TB prevention education for patients' family and employees, and TB screening for employees along with follow-up examinations. However, private negative pressure rooms were more often available in wards and intensive care units than in outpatient departments, and in institutions with over 700 beds located in Seoul or GyeongGi Province. Most hospitals ensured that masks were placed on infected patients while transporting them. In addition, efforts to control TB infection such as placing respiratory etiquette posters in outpatient departments and airborne infection signs on the doors in the wards were also well established in most institutions. Conclusion: More efforts are needed to improve the status of TB infection control to ensure quality care, especially in terms of monitoring patients with TB infections and making private negative pressure rooms available in outpatient departments.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the infection control education experiences of dental hygienists and the state of their infection control. Methods : The subjects in this study were the dental hygienists who worked in Seoul. The relationship of their infection control education experiences to their gender, marital status, academic credential, workplace, length of service, infection control implementation, experience of being exposed to infection, way of coping with it, hand washing, use of personal protection devices and equipment management was analyzed. Results : It is found that the variable to affect the state of infection control was educational experiences about handpiece water pipe management, ultrasonic scaler water pipe management and three-way syringe water pipe management. Conclusions : Dental hygienists who are one of major dental personnels should receive systematic education on infection control to acquire accurate knowledge to ensure the successful prevention of cross infection.
The work of visiting nursing personnel consists mostly of direct nursing and it is absolutely necessary that training of the nursing personnel for infection control be emphasized because most of patients are composed of elderly people with chronic diseases and malnutrition who are highly susceptible to infection. Accordingly. this study was designed to provide basic data for the development of an infection control program in public health centers as well as the promotion of perception and performance of infection control by analysing the perception of importance and performance in the infection control of visiting nursing personnel who carry out visiting nursing services. The subjects of this study consisted of a number of visiting nursing personnel working for 15 public health centers. 15 health-center branches. and 16 health clinics. The collection of data was grounded on a questionnaire method. The questionnaire breaks down to 8 questions about general characteristics and 108 questions in connection with the perception and performance of infection control. The results of this study are as follows: 1. 82 subjects (78.1%) responded that it is necessary to control infection. 79 subjects(75.3%) responded that education is necessary for infection control. 50 respondents (47.6%) answered in the affirmative in regard to the role of infection carriers. 2. The mean score for the perception of importance in infection control was 4.55 and that performance accounts for 4.03. this turns out to be very high. 3. In terms of the perception of importance per each field of infection control. medication. the management of contamination and sterilization, the control of environments and instruments. washing hands and individual hygiene as well as the prevention of cross-infection and the supervision of infection stand at 4.72. 4.64. 4.60. 4.58. 4.52 and 4.21 respectively. In terms of performance. the supervision of infection. the control of environments and instruments, individual hygiene and the prevention of cross infection. medication. washing hands, and the management of contamination and sterilization was 4.21. 4.12. 4.10. 4.03. 3.91 and 3.81 respectively. 4. In terms of the correlation between the perception of importance and the performance of infection control. the score stands high in all fields: this means the high perception of importance leads to high performance statistically (P< .05). 5. In terms of the perception of importance in general characteristics. there is no significant difference while the form of working places. working career and the career as visiting nursing personnel show a significant difference in terms of performance(P< .05). From the results. it is suggested that the visiting nursing personnel should be constantly educated with the aid of the development of infection control programs and that instructions and instruments for the management of infection should be worked out so as to enhance the performance of infection control on the part of nurses in applicable communities.
Purpose: This study was conducted to provide basic data necessary to develop a program to improve infection control by examining nurses' perception of accreditation and by identifying its relationship with awareness and performance of infection control. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed using questionnaires. Data were collected from 210 nurses who were working at one hospital between May 14 and May 19, 2015. Data were analyzed using SPAW. Results: The mean score for nurses' perception of accreditation was 3.10 points out of 5 points. Score for awareness of infection control was $4.63{\pm}0.39$ points and for performance of infection control, $4.39{\pm}0.39$ points. There were significant positive correlation among perception of accreditation, awareness of infection control, and performance of infection control. In the regression analysis, performance of infection control was influenced by awareness of infection control which accounted for 42.6% of the variance. It also showed additional improvement of 1.4% of the variance by when perception of accreditation was added. Conclusion: The result of this study show that nurses' perception of accreditation is relatively positive and that performance of infection control is highly enhanced according to nurses' positive recognition of accreditation as well as attaching importance to accreditation.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between empowerment and performance of infection control by emergency department nurses. Method: Participants were 190 nurses working in emergency departments in 14 hospitals located in Busan. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficients with SPSS PC+ WIN 12.0 were used to analyze the data. Results: There were significant differences in empowerment by years in ED (emergency departments) and position. There was a significant differences in performance of infection control by position. There were significant differences in empowerment by infection control-related characteristics and by regular conference for infection control. There was a significant and positive relationship between empowerment and performance of infection control in ED nurses. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that improvement in the level of ED nurse's empowerment would lead to an increase in the performances of infection control.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify awareness and competency for Multi-Drug Resistant Organisms (MDRO) infection control in nursing students with experience of clinical practice. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from March 2019 to May 2019 by including 231 nursing students in four nursing schools located in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheongnam-do. The data were collected using self-report questionnaires. Results: The awareness and the competency for Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) infection control were lower than that of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The agreement between the awareness and the competency of MDRO infection control in participants was low with regard to isolation, contact precautions, and disinfection for MRSA. Also, it was low with respect to disinfection, isolation, contact precautions, and carrier identification for CRE. The awareness and the competency of MDRO infection control exhibited significant positive correlation. Conclusion: The infection control competency is required to prevent MDRO infection. In order to enhance the infection control competency, it is important to raise awareness about MDRO infection control by providing education based on the guidelines and the principles of infection control.
Purpose: This study aimed to identify the factors influencing competency for Multi-Drug Resistant Organisms (MDRO) infection control in nursing students with clinical practice experience. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from May 2020 to August 2020 by including 175 nursing students in two nursing schools located in Daegu. The data were collected using self-report questionnaires. The data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 25.0 program with descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA, correlation, and multiple regression. Results: The competency of MDRO infection control was 3.41.±0.38. The attitude to patient safety management and - knowledge of MDRO infection control were 3.81±0.47 and 16.98±3.02, respectively. Factors influencing the competency of MDRO infection control were perceived benefit(β=.38, p<.001), knowledge toward MDRO infection control(β=.21, p=.001), attitude in patient safety management(β=.17, p=.028), and perceived barrier(β=-.15, p=.029) with an explanatory power of 34.2%. Conclusion: A systemic education program regarding MDRO infection control is needed for nursing students to provide knowledge related to MDRO infection control and help establish positive beliefs toward MDRO infection control and attitudes in patient safety management.
Purpose: This study aimed to identify factors relating to COVID-19 knowledge and resilience that impact elementary school health teacher performance at infection control. Methods: This study adopted a cross-sectional design. Data were collected from 140 elementary school health teachers by convenience sampling. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS Ver. 26.0. Results: Mean scores were as follows COVID-19 knowledge 17.99±2.37 (range 0-23), resilience 120.36±16.90 (range 30-150), and performance at infection control 85.91±10.07 (range 25-100). A positive correlation was observed between resilience and infection control performance (r=0.57, p<.001). Factors found to influence participant performance at infection control were resilience (𝛽=0.54, p<.001) and two categories of educational experience: 11-15 years (𝛽 = 0.24, p=.011) and more than 20 years (𝛽=0.29, p=.044). Conclusion: These results indicate the resilience of elementary school health teachers positively affects their performance at infection control. Generally, both age and work experience affected ability to perform infection control. Therefore, this study supports the need to develop programs to increase the resilience of elementary school health teachers according to infection control performance and age.
Purpose: This study aimed to identify factors affecting the carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae (CRE) infection control performance of nursing staff, who closely contact patients with CRE in long-term care hospitals. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used. A total of 135 nursing staffs working in seven long-term care hospitals in the southern and northern areas of the K province in Korea were included. We measured the CRE infection control general characteristics, knowledge, perception, and performance. Results: The main factors affecting the CRE infection control performance were education, knowledge, and perception. The model explained the 60.8% total variance in CRE infection control. Conclusion: Appropriate infection control strategies should be prepared to provide high quality nursing care and prevent the spread of CRE infection in long-term care hospitals. Establishing an efficient infection control system in long-term care hospitals is necessary.
Objectives: Emergency medical personnel (EMPs) are pre-hospital emergency responders who are at risk of exposure to infections and may also serve as a source for the transmission of infections. However, few studies of infection control have specifically addressed EMPs in the Republic of Korea (hereafter Korea). The goal of this study was to assess the current status of infection prevention and control programs (IPCPs) for EMPs in Korea. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted to quantitatively assess the resources and activities of IPCPs. A total of 907 EMPs in five metropolitan cities completed a structured questionnaire from September 2014 to January 2015. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, multi-response analysis, and the chi-square test. Results: The mean age of the participants was $34.8{\pm}15.1years$. IPCPs were found to have weaknesses with regard to the following resources: the assignment of infection control personnel (ICP) (79.5%), hand hygiene resources such as waterless antiseptics (79.3%), the use of paper towels (38.9%), personal protective equipment such as face shields (46.9%), and safety containers for sharps and a separated space for the disposal of infectious waste (10.1%). Likewise, the following activities were found to be inadequately incorporated into the workflow of EMPs: education about infection control (77.5%), post-exposure management (35.9%), and the decontamination of items and spaces after use (88.4%). ICP were found to have a significant effect on the resources and activities of IPCPs (p<0.001). The resources and activities of IPCPs were found to be significantly different among the five cities (p<0.001). Conclusions: IPCPs for EMPs showed some limitations in their resources and activities. IPCPs should be actively supported, and specific IPCP activities for EMPs should be developed.
