As one of the most important parameters in structural health monitoring, structural frequency has many advantages, such as convenient to be measured, high precision, and insensitive to noise. In addition, frequency-change-ratio based method had been validated to have the ability to identify the damage occurrence and location. However, building a precise enough finite elemental model (FEM) for the test structure is still a huge challenge for this frequency-change-ratio based damage detection technique. In order to overcome this disadvantage and extend the application for frequencies in structural health monitoring area, a novel method was developed in this paper by combining the cross-model cross-mode (CMCM) model updating algorithm with the frequency-change-ratio based method. At first, assuming the physical parameters, including the element mass and stiffness, of the test structure had been known with a certain value, then an initial to-be-updated model with these assumed parameters was constructed according to the typical mass and stiffness distribution characteristic of shear buildings. After that, this to-be-updated model was updated using CMCM algorithm by combining with the measured frequencies of the actual structure when no damage was introduced. Thus, this updated model was regarded as a representation of the FEM model of actual structure, because their modal information were almost the same. Finally, based on this updated model, the frequency-change-ratio based method can be further proceed to realize the damage detection and localization. In order to verify the effectiveness of the developed method, a four-level shear building was numerically simulated and two actual shear structures, including a three-level shear model and an eight-story frame, were experimentally test in laboratory, and all the test results demonstrate that the developed method can identify the structural damage occurrence and location effectively, even only very limited modal frequencies of the test structure were provided.
The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of pigment composition on the calendering response and structure of the coated paper. Calendering response of the coated paper was determined from the gloss values of the uncalendered and calendered coated papers, and the relationship between gloss and coating structure was discussed. The surface and cross section of the coating layer was observed using a scanning electron microscope to examine the coating structure. Coating layers were hardened in epoxy resin and polished with carbimet paper disc for preparing SEM samples. Maximum calendering response was obtained for the coated paper prepared from 80pph of clay and 20pph of ground calcium carbonate (GCC) as pigments. Photomicrographs of the surface and cross section of the coating layer show that clay tends to form dense coating structure, while GCC tends to form bulky coating layer.
To elucidate the effect of oxygen radicals on the molecular properties of proteins, the secondary and tertiary structure and molecular weight size of BSA and ${\beta}$-lactoglobulin were examined after irradiation of proteins at various doses. Gamma-irradiation of protein solutions caused the disruption of the ordered structure of protein molecules as well as degradation, cross-linking, and aggregation of the polypeptide chains. As a model system, BSA and ${\beta}$-lactoglobulin were used as a typical ${\alpha}$-helical and a ${\beta}$-sheet structure protein, respectively. A circular dichroism study showed that the increase of radiation decreased the ordered structure of proteins with a concurrent increase of aperiodic structure content. Fluorescence spectroscopy indicated that irradiation quenched the emission intensity excited at 280 nm. SDS-PAGE and a gel permeation chromatography study indicated that radiation caused initial fragmentation of proteins resulting in a subsequent aggregation due to cross-linking of protein molecules.
The existing track structure for urban Maglev system is designed for the Maglev vehicles of HSST in Japan and UTM in Korea. The tracks hvaing cross beams for supporting rails are located on bridge girders and have several draw backs. Linimo in Nagoya, Japan, the first commercial urban Maglev line, has separated tracks from a bridge to overcome the previous track structure. However, the Linimo just put the existing track on bridge deck. This study suggests a improved track structure for urban Maglev system and compares the behavior of the new and existing track through static structural analyses. In the improved track, the power collector of a Maglew vehicle is installed parallel to the bridge deck surface, and, thus, the bottom width of the track structure is not limited by the vehicle's width. Therefore, the live load is distributed more effectively by the wide bottom of the track. Also, steel plates instead of steel cross beams are used to support rails, and, thus, the rail's deflection is improved.
The aim of our study is to automatically analyze how textile is woven which has complicated structure, such as textile with multi-layer structure. For this purpose, we propose a method to reconstruct a textile structure of a textile is visualized. Then, the anteroposterior sections of the same yarn on the cross sectional images is associated each other by superimposing them. Therefore, by this method, 3-D information of each yarn is obtained and the 3-D shape of each yarn is independently expressed. In this research, a 3-D reconstruction of a plain weave fabric is performed.
The effect of braid construction parameters on yarn cross-sectional shape is presented in this paper. The location of the yam within the braid unit cell is quantified by a compaction factor. A range of braided fabrics were produced and optically measured for actual yarn cross-sectional shape. A comparison of the theoretical and experimental values shows good correlation. Design curves can be produced with the developed model to allow selection of appropriate braid process parameter to create yarns with desired cross-sectional geometries.
For a fire cause judgement this paper describes the short circuit characteristics of a electric wire through the cross section analysis under ac condition. The cower wires prepared for the experiment were 1.2mm, 1.6mm, and 2.0mm in diameter. Through the cross section analysis(CSA), it was confirmed that the dendrite structure grew at the angle of about $40^{\circ}\;or\;60^{\circ}$ when the fusing current was applied to the wires. The larger the fusing current is, the more decreased the growth angle of the dendrite structure is. It was confirmed that the dendrite structure was arranged like the columnar structure. In this paper, the characteristics analysis of short circuit was carried out in the range of transient duration and the correlation constant k was investigated by measuring the short circuit duration and the fusing current.
This study examined the water absorption and drying properties of the thirteen types of the knitted fabrics for sports wear. These physical properties were analysed with relation to the constituent fiber cross-sectional shape and structure parameters of the knitted fabrics by regression analysis. Absorption and drying properties of the knitted fabric specimens were increased with increasing the porosity of the constituent yarns, which was attributed to the capillary channels in the yarns. The water absorption and drying properties were increased and decreased with increasing tightness factor and stitch density of the knitted fabric. The absorption property of the knitted fabric for perspiration absorption and fast dry sport-wear clothing was mostly influenced mostly by fiber cross-sectional shape and its characteristics, whereas, drying property was dependent on the structural parameters of the knitted fabric such as tightness factor and stitch density. Therefore, superior perspiration absorption and fast drying knitted fabric could be obtained in the fabric structure with optimum tightness factor and stitch density, and constituent yarn structure with non-circular fiber crosssection and high porosity. GATS method and MMT method are used to measure sweating fast drying properties and it is necessary to carry out studies using these measurement methods in order to compare with the results of this study.
