  • This paper presents an investigation into cross-cultural transfiguration of Buddhist faith in Goryeo Dynasty, with a focus on $\acute{S}\bar{u}$raṃgama-s$\bar{u}$tra that used to be in vogue in East Asia. There are three major types of $\acute{S}\bar{u}$raṃgama-s$\bar{u}$tra faith in Goryeo: the first one was concerned about the scripture itself including its citation and publication and the compilation of its annotation books; the second one involved establishing Buddhist rituals related to the scripture; and the final one was to create Dh$\bar{a}$ran$\bar{i}$ stone poles with Dafoding Dh$\bar{a}$ran$\bar{i}$ in Volume 7 of the scripture engraved in stone. While it was the common practice to engrave Zunsheng Dh$\bar{a}$ran$\bar{i}$ in China, the number of stone poles on which Dafoding Dh$\bar{a}$ran$\bar{i}$ was engraved was overwhelmingly large. There are a couple of reasons behind the difference: first, there was a tendency of Zunsheng Dh$\bar{a}$ran$\bar{i}$ being worshiped at the national level in Goryeo, which probably explains why the percentage of Zunsheng Dh$\bar{a}$ran$\bar{i}$ stone poles designed to pray for a personal mass for the dead by engraving Dh$\bar{a}$ran$\bar{i}$ on a stone pole was considerably low. In addition, there were esoteric sects in Goryeo, and it is estimated that they must have got involved in the establishment of Dafoding Dh$\bar{a}$ran$\bar{i}$ stone poles in the former half of Goryeo. Furthermore, the Zen sects had a deep non-Zen understanding of Esoteric Buddhism and tended to practice Dh$\bar{a}$ran$\bar{i}$ in Goryeo. It is estimated that Dafoding Dh$\bar{a}$ran$\bar{i}$ stone poles were set up in large numbers in Goryeo as the prevalence of $\acute{S}\bar{u}$raṃgama-s$\bar{u}$tra faith that continued on since the former half of Goryeo was combined with the Zen sects' active position about Dh$\bar{a}$ran$\bar{i}$.

  • The cross-shore sediment transport in a coastal region causes the important changes in beach morphological properties. The accurate estimation of the cross-shore sediment transport is important for the designing of the marine structures such as seawalls, jetties, breakwaters etc, and the preventing coastal erosion and accretion due to on-off shore sediment transportation. In this study, the experiments on cross- shore sediment transport carried out in a laboratory wave channel for initial beach slopes of 1/8, 1/10 and 1/15. Using the regular waves with different deep-water wave steepness generated by a pedal-type wave generator, the geometrical characteristics of beach profiles under storm conditions and the parameters affecting on-off shore sediment transport are investigated for the beach materials having medium diameters of $d_{50}$=0.25, 0.32, 0.45, 0.62 and 0.80 mm. The experimental results obtained from this study compared with previous experimental work and found to be of the same magnitude as the experimental measurements and followed the expected basic trend.

  • Recently, solvent-resistant nanofiltration membranes have been studied for the separation of solvents or solutes using a molecular weight cut-off system of the polymer which is resistant to a specific solvent. Required conditions for these membranes must have are excellent physical properties and solvent resistance. Polybenzimidazole, which is known to be one of the most heat-resistant commercially available polymers, has an excellent inherent solvent resistance and it is even insoluble in stronger organic solvents when cross-linked. Therefore, in this study, the applicability of polybenzimidazole as a solvent resistant nanofiltration membrane was discussed. The membrane was fabricated using the non-solvent induced phase separation method and showed a suitable morphology as a nanofiltration membrane confirmed by field emission scanning electron microscopy. In addition, the permeance of the solvent in the presence or absence of cross-linking was investigated and the stability was also confirmed through long operation. The permeance test was carried out with five different solvents: water, ethanol, benzene, N, N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) and n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP); each of the initial flux was $6500L/m^2h$ (water, 2 bar), $720L/m^2h$ (DMAc, 5 bar), $185L/m^2h$ (benzene, 5 bar), $132L/m^2h$ (NMP, 5 bar), $65L/m^2h$ (ethanol, 5 bar) and the pressure between 2 and 5 bar was applied depending on the type of membrane.

  • As a new type of large-span space structure, suspendome is composited of the upper single-layer reticulated shell and the lower cable-strut system. It has better mechanical properties compared to single-layer reticulated shell, and the overall stiffness of suspendome structure increases greatly due to the prestress of cable. Consequently, it can cross a larger span reasonably, economically and grandly with high rigidity, good stability and simple construction. For a better assessment of the advantages of mechanical characteristic of suspendome quantitatively, the static behavior of Kiewitt6 suspendome was studied by using finite element method, and ADINA was the software application to implement the analysis. By studying a certain suspendome, the internal forces, deformation and support constrained forces of the structure were obtained in this paper. Furthermore, the influences of parameters including prestress, stay bar length, cross-sectional area and rise-to-span ratio were also discussed. The results show that the increase of prestress and vertical stay bar length can improve the stiffness of suspendome; Cross-sectional area has nearly no impact on the static behavior, and the rise-to-span ratio is the most sensitive parameter.

  • In this study, micro genetic algorithm is used to find an optimum cross section of grid structures with pretension. Design optimization of trusses consists of arriving at optimum sizes of cross-section and prestressing force parameters, when weight of the truss is minimum, satisfying a set of specified constraints. The present approach is verified by ten-bar truss example showing good agreements with previous results. Features of the proposed method, which help in modeling and application to optimal design of pretensioned truss structures, are demonstrated by solving a problem of seventy two bar truss structures. The minimum weight design of seventy two bar truss is performed for various magnitudes of pretension and optimal prestressing forces are also found for various configurations of pretensioned truss structures.

  • In this study, we presented comparative discrimination methods to identify various line and planar defects observed in nonpolar a-GaN epilayers on r-sapphire substrates. Unlike the case of conventional c-GaN, which is dominated by perfect threading dislocations, systematic identification of undistinguishable defects using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is necessary to suppress the propagation of defects in nonpolar GaN epilayers. Cross-sectional TEM images near the [0001] zone axis revealed that perfect mixed and pure screw type dislocations are visible, while pure edge, partial dislocations, and basal stacking faults (BSFs) are not discernible. In tilted cross-sectional TEM images along the [$1\bar{2}10$] zone axis, the dominant defects were BSFs and partial dislocations for the $g=10\bar{1}0$ and 0002 two-beam images, respectively. From plan view TEM images taken along the [$11\bar{2}0$] axis, it was found that the dominantpartial and perfect dislocations were Frank-Shockley with b=${\pm}1/6$<$20\bar{2}3$> and mixed type without an 1 component including b=${\pm}1/3$<$1\bar{2}10$> and ${\pm}1/3$<$\bar{2}110$>, respectively. Prismatic stacking faults were observed as inclined line contrast near the [0001] zone axis and were visible as band contrast in the two-beam images along the [$1\bar{2}10$] and [$11\bar{2}0$] zone axes.

  • We propose a novel ultra-short asymmetric vertical directional coupler switch (VDCS) with high extinction ratios larger than 30㏈ composed of switching operation induced section (SOIS), extinction ratio adjusted section (ERAS), and extinction ratio enhanced section (ERES). In this VDCSs, switching operation is achieved by changing the refractive index of one core in SOIS. The improvement of extinction ratios larger than 30㏈ for both cross and bar states is achieved by controlling the asymmetry of refractive indices between both cores in ERES. After propagating through ERAS with symmetry in the structure, different extinction ratios between cross and bar states at the end of SOIS are changed to the same value. For this reason, the optimum asymmetry of the refractive indices of cores to have the maximum extinction ratios and the lengths of ERES are the same for cross and bar states. Design guidelines to achieve high extinction ratios with large tolerances are presented.

  • Since catalyst technology is one of the promising technologies to improve the working performance of next generation energy and electronic devices, many efforts have been made to develop various catalysts with high efficiency at a low cost. However, there are remaining challenges to be resolved in order to use the suggested catalytic materials, such as platinum (Pt), gold (Au), and palladium (Pd), due to their poor cost-effectiveness for device applications. In this study, to overcome these challenges, we suggest a useful method to increase the surface area of a noble metal catalyst material, resulting in a reduction of the total amount of catalyst usage. By employing block copolymer (BCP) self-assembly and nano-transfer printing (n-TP) processes, we successfully fabricated sub-20 nm Pt line and cross-bar patterns. Furthermore, we obtained a highly ordered Pt cross-bar pattern on a Ni thin film and a Pt-embedded Ni thin film, which can be used as hetero hybrid alloy catalyst structure. For a detailed analysis of the hybrid catalytic material, we used scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), which revealed a well-defined nanoporous Pt nanostructure on the Ni thin film. Based on these results, we expect that the successful hybridization of various catalytic nanostructures can be extended to other material systems and devices in the near future.

  • With the increase of the skyscraper center, the development of large-diameter and high-strength reinforcing bars is being carried out to solve the dense reinforcement. In case of the steel reinforced concrete with a small cross section such as beam-column joints, the development length becomes short when straight bars are used. Therefore, it is possible to solve the problem that the development length becomes short by using the bearing strength of the hooked bar and headed bar. In this study, the exterior beam-column joint test of SD700 hooked bar and headed bar with anchorage length of 20db was conducted to extend the development length limitation of hooked bar and headed bar. As a result of the evaluation of the anchorage strength using the design equation by KCI, the average of the [measured value]/[predicted value] ratio was 1.31 for the hooked reinforcing bars. In the case of headed bars, the average of the [measured value]/[predicted value] ratio was 1.12. In addition, in order to compare the anchorage performance of the hooked bar and the headed bar, the measured values were divided by the square root of the compressive strength of the concrete to compare the anchorage strength. Under the same conditions, the anchorage strength of headed bars was 8.5% higher than the hooked bars.

  • The influence of reinforcement buckling on the flexural response of reinforced concrete members is studied. The stress-strain response of compression reinforcement is determined computationally using a large-strain finite element model for bars of varied diameter, length, and initial eccentricity, and a mathematical expression is fitted to the simulation results. This relationship is used to represent the response of bars in compression in a moment-curvature analysis of a reinforced concrete cross section. The compression bar may carry more or less force than a tension bar at a corresponding strain, depending on the relative influence of Poisson effects and bar slenderness. Several cross-section analyses indicate that, for the distances between stirrups prescribed in modern concrete codes, the influence of inelastic buckling of the longitudinal reinforcement on the monotonic moment capacity is very small and can be neglected in many circumstances.
