The development of models for agriculture systems, especially for crop production, has supported the prediction of crop yields under various environmental change scenarios and the selection of better crop species or cultivar. Crop models could be used as tools for supporting reasonable nutrient management approaches for agricultural land. This paper outlines the simplified structure of main crop models (crop growth model, crop-soil model, and crop-soil-environment model) frequently used in agricultural systems and shows diverse application of their simulated results. Crop growth models such as LINTUL, SUCROS, could provide simulated data for daily growth, potential production, and photosynthesis assimilate partitioning to various organs with different physiological stages, and for evaluating crop nutrient demand. Crop-Soil models (DSSAT, APSIM, WOFOST, QUEFTS) simulate growth, development, and yields of crops; soil processes describing nutrient uptake from root zone; and soil nutrient supply capability, e.g., mineralization/decomposition of soil organic matter. The crop model built for the DSSAT family software has limitations in spatial variability due to its simulation mechanism based on a single homogeneous field unit. To introduce well-performing crop models, the potential applications for crop-soil-environment models such as DSSAT, APSIM, or even a newly designed model, should first be compared. The parameterization of various crops under different cultivation conditions like those of intensive farming systems common in Korea, shortened crop growth period, should be considered as well as various resource inputs.

Crop growth simulation models have been developed as research and management tools. When these models are needed to incorporate new knowledge on phenology and physiology of crops, programming languages have been used for development and documentation of these models. However, researchers may have limited skill in programming languages. Furthermore, software developer may find it challenging to improve the crop models because documentation of the models are rarely available. The Unified Modeling Language (UML) can provide a simple approach for development and documentation of model. A template for implementation of the model can be obtained using the UML, which would facilitate code re-use and model improvement.

Spatial and timely information on crop and filed conditions is one of the most important basics for rational and efficient planning and management in agriculture. Remote sensing, GIS, and modeling are powerful tools for such applications. This paper presents an overview of the state of the art in remote sensing of crop and field conditions with some case studies. It is also shown that a synergistic linkage between process-based models and remote sensing signatures enables us to estimate the multiple crop/ecosystem variables at a dynamic mode. Remotely sensed information can greatly reduce the uncertainty of simulation models by compensating for insufficient availability of data or parameters. This synergistic approach allows the effective use of infrequent and multi-source remote sensing data for estimating important ecosystem variables such as biomass growth and ecosystem $CO_2$ flux. This paper also shows a geo-spatial information system that enables us to integrate, search, extract, process, transform, and calculate any part of the data based on ID#, attributes, and/or by river-basin boundary, administrative boundary, or boundaries of arbitrary shape/size all over Japan. A case study using the system demonstrates that the nitrogen load from fertilizer was closely related to nitrate concentration of groundwater. The combined use of remote sensing, GIS and modeling would have great potential for various agro-ecosystem applications.
The traditional crop productivity simulations based on crop models are normally site-specific. To simulate regional crop productivity, the spatial crop model is developed in this study by integrating Geographical Information System (GIS) with Erosion Productivity Impact Calculator (EPIC) model. The integration applied a loose coupling approach. Data are exchanged using ASCII or binary data format between GIS and EPIC model without a common user interface. The spatial EPIC model is conducted to simulate the average corn and wheat productivity of 1980s in North China. The results show that the simulation accuracy of the spatial EPIC model is acceptable. The simulation accuracy can be improved by using the detailed crop management information, such as irrigation, fertilizer and tillage schedule.
Interest is growing in applying simulation models for the South Texas conditions, to better assess crop water use and production with different crop management practices. The Environmental Policy Integrated Climate (EPIC) model was used to evaluate its application as a decision support tool for irrigation management of com (Zea mays L.) in South Texas of the U.S. We measured actual crop evapotranspiration (ETc) using a weighing lysimeter, soil moisture using a neutron probe, and grain yield by field sampling. The model was then validated using the measured data. Simulated ETc using the Hargreaves-Samani equation was in agreement with the lysimeter measured ETc. Simulated soil moisture generally matched with the measured soil moisture. The EPIC model simulated the variability in grain yield with different irrigation regimes with $r^2$value of 0.69 and root mean square error of $0.5\;ton\;ha^{-1}$. Simulation results with farm data demonstrate that EPIC can be used as a decision support tool for com under irrigated conditions in South Texas. EPIC appears to be effective in making long term and pre-season decisions for irrigation management of crops, while reference ET and phenologically based crop coefficients can be used for inseason irrigation management.

Crop status monitoring and yield prediction at higher spatial resolution is a valuable tool in various decision making processes including agricultural policy making by the national and local governments. A prototype crop forecasting system was developed to project the size of rice crop across geographic areas nationwide, based on daily weather pattern. The system consists of crop models and the input data for 1,455 cultivation zone units (the smallest administrative unit of local government in South Korea called "Myun") making up the coterminous South Korea. CERES-rice, a rice crop growth simulation model, was tuned to have genetic characteristics pertinent to domestic cultivars. Daily maximum/minimum temperature, solar radiation, and precipitation surface on 1km by 1km grid spacing were prepared by a spatial interpolation of 63 point observations from the Korea Meteorological Administration network. Spatial mean weather data were derived for each Myun and transformed to the model input format. Soil characteristics and management information at each Myun were available from the Rural Development Administration. The system was applied to the forecasting of national rice production for the recent 3 years (1997 to 1999). The model was run with the past weather data as of September 15 each year, which is about a month earlier than the actual harvest date. Simulated yields of 1,455 Myuns were grouped into 162 counties by acreage-weighted summation to enable the validation, since the official production statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is on the county basis. Forecast yields were less sensitive to the changes in annual climate than the reported yields and there was a relatively weak correlation between the forecast and the reported yields. However, the projected size of rice crop at each county, which was obtained by multiplication of the mean yield with the acreage, was close to the reported production with the $r^2$ values higher than 0.97 in all three years.

The crop growth simulation model could be adopted to evaluate the impact not only of the long term climate change such as atmosphere $CO_2$ concentration rising and global warming but also of the predicted short term weather variability on the national crop production. There are several growth simulation models for predicting rice crop performance such as ORYZA1, CERES-Rice, Rice Clock Model, and SIMRIW.(omitted)

The needs for precise diagnostics and farm management-decision aids have increased to reduce the risk of climate change and environmental stress. Crop simulation models have been widely used to search optimal solutions for effective cultural practices. However, limited knowledge on physiological responses to environmental variation would make it challenging to apply crop simulation models to a wide range of studies. Advanced research facilities would help investigation of plant response to the environment. In the present study, the sunlit controlled environment chambers, known as Korean SPAR (Soil-Plant-Atmosphere-Research) system, was developed by renovating existing SPAR system. The Korean SPAR system controls and monitors major environmental variables including atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration, temperature and soil moisture. Furthermore, plants are allowed to grow under natural sunlight. Key physiological and physical data such as canopy photosynthesis and respiration, canopy water and nutrient use over the whole growth period are also collected automatically. As a case study, it was shown that the Korean SPAR system would be useful for collection of data needed for understanding the growth and developmental processes of a crop, e.g., soybean. In addition, we have demonstrated that the canopy photosynthetic data of the Korean SPAR indicate the precise representation of physiological responses to environment variation. As a result, physical and physiological data obtained from the Korean SPAR are expected to be useful for development of an advanced crop simulation model minimizing errors and confounding factors that usually occur in field experiments.

Climate change caused by elevated greenhouse gases would affect crop production through different pathways in agricultural ecosystems. Because an agricultural ecosystem has complex interactions between societal and economical environment as well as organisms, climate, and soil, adaptation measures in response to climate change on a specific sector could cause undesirable impacts on other sectors inadvertently. An integrated system, which links individual models for components of agricultural ecosystems, would allow to take into account complex interactions existing in a given agricultural ecosystem under climate change and to derive proper adaptation measures in order to improve crop productivity. Most of models for agricultural ecosystems have been used in a separate sector, e.g., prediction of water resources or crop growth. Few of those models have been desiged to be connected to other models as a module of an integrated system. Threfore, it would be crucial to redesign and to refine individual models that have been used for simulation of individual sectors. To improve models for each sector in terms of accuracy and algorithm, it would also be needed to obtain crop growth data through construction of super-sites and satellite sites for long-term monitoring of agricultural ecosystems. It would be advantageous to design a model in a sector from abstraction and inheritance of a simple model, which would facilitate development of modules compatible to the integrated prediction system. Because agricultural production is influenced by social and economical sectors considerably, construction of an integreated system that simulates agricultural production as well as economical activities including trade and demand is merited for prediction of crop production under climate change.
Remote sensing data can be integrated into crop models, making simulation improved. A crop model that uses remote sensing data was evaluated for its capability, which was performed through comparing three different methods of canopy measurement for cotton(Gossypium hirsutum L.). The measurement methods used were leaf area index(LAI), hand-held remotely sensed perpendicular vegetation index(PVI), and satellite remotely sensed PVI. Simulated values of cotton growth and lint yield showed reasonable agreement with the corresponding measurements when canopy measurements of LAI and hand-held remotely sensed PVI were used for model calibration. Meanwhile, simulated lint yields involving the satellite remotely sensed PVI were in rough agreement with the measured lint yields. We believe this matter could be improved by using remote sensing data obtained from finer resolution sensors. The model not only has simple input requirements but also is easy to use. It promises to expand its applicability to other regions for crop production, and to be applicable to regional crop growth monitoring and yield mapping projects.
