In the entrained-flow coal gasifier, coal ash turns into a molten slag most of which deposits onto the wall to form liquid and solid layers. Critical viscosity refers to the viscosity at the interface of the two layers. The slag layers play an important role in protecting the wall from physical/chemical attack from the hot syngas and in continuously discharging the ash to the slag tap at the bottom of the gasifier. For coal with high ash melting point and slag viscosity, CaO-based flux is added to coal to lower the viscosity. This study evaulates the effect of critical viscosity temperature and ash/flux ratio on the slag behavior using numerical modelling in a commercial gasifier. The changes in the slag layer thickness, heat transfer rate, surface temperature and velocity profiles were analyzed to understand the underlying mechanism of slag flow and heat transfer.

The viscosities of $CaO-SiO_2-Al_2O_3-MgO$ flux were measured under the condition of $CaO/SiO_2=1.0-1.3$ and 5-20 wt%MgO. Submerged arc welding flux with $5wt%Al_2O_3$ content had the lowest critical temperature and widest solid-liquid coexisting region at about 5 wt%MgO. It indicateds that both critical temperature and viscosity depend on the kind of primary phase of molten flux. Viscous behavior of the molten flux at 1773 K was analyzed in the view of silicate structure changed by FT-IR spectroscopy. Based on the critical temperature and the behavior of viscosity at a fixed temperature, it could be proposed that the contents of MgO and $Al_2O_3$ in SAW flux show a pronounced effect on preventing contamination in maintaining the liquid phase flux after welding process.

Numerical analysis has been carried out to investigate transient turbulent convective heat transfer in a vertical tube for supercritical water near the thermodynamic critical point. Heat transfer and fluid flow in the tube we strongly coupled due to the large variations of thermodynamic and transport properties such as density, specific heat, and turbulent viscosity. As pressure in the tube approaches to the critical pressure, the properties variation with time becomes larger. Heat transfer coefficient rapidly decreases along the tube near the pseudocritical temperature at the tube wall for $P_R<1.2$. Stanton number variation with time is largely reduced in the region of gas-like phase in comparison with Nusselt number. Turbulent viscosity ratio close to the wall increases near the pseudocritical temperature and it gradually decreases with time.
An experimental technique was developed to determine the strain-rate in a tensile specimen. Then one can calculate the transient isothermal elongational viscosity. Both shear and elongational viscosities were measured to study the effect of shear and elongational fields on the flow properties. The comparison between these viscosities shows that the onset of rapid viscosity growth as crystallization solidification proceeds occurs at about the same value of time at very small deformation rates (0.0028 and 0.0047 $s^{-1}$). The comparison of these measured viscosities as functions of shear and elongational Hencky strains also reveals that the onset of rapid viscosity growths starts at critical Hencky strain values. The behaviour of steady shear viscosity as function of temperature sweep was also explored at three different low shear rates. Finally, the influence of changing oscillatory frequencies and strain rates was also investigated.

Among other poly(4,4'-terephthanilidealkylamide)s (PTAA's), poly (4,4'-terephthanilideadipamide) (PTAd) gave clear critical concentration curves. For PTAA's with methylene units more than 6, the critical concentration (C*) seemed to be beyond the solubility limit of H₂SO₄. Under shearing conditions, the nematic domains were easily oriented and stretched in the direction of shear , and a fibrillar structure resulted. At low frequencies, a monotollous reduction of loss tangent (tan) was observed as concentration increased. At high frequencies, however, tan was increased above C* again, and showed maximum at saturation concentration (Cs). With increasing temperature, viscosity of isotropic and anisotropic phases was normally decreased, while viscosity of biphases was increased. Plot of complex viscosity (If) against temperature based on rheological measurements exhibited a good correlation with phase diagram constructed by polarizing microscope observations. Rheological parameters suggested the optimum dope concentration of PTAd with inherent viscosity 2.02 at 30oc is in the vicinity of 19.2 wt%, which seemed to agree well with spinning experiments (around 19.4 wt%). In general, effects of spinning and annealing conditions on the mechanical properties of PTAA fibres were most pronounced in PTAd fibre spun from anisotropic spinning dope .
The high viscous ${\gamma}$-polyglutamic acid(${\gamma}$-PGA) from alkalophilic Alcaligenes sp. was purified and its solution property was investigated. The intrinsic viscosities for Na+ form and H+ form of ${\gamma}$-PGA were 31.1 and 0.38d$\ell$/g, respectively. The viscosity of H+-PGA was not influenced by pH or salts while that of Na+-PGA was influenced. The intrinsic viscosity of Na+-PGA solution decreased remarkably at the alkaline or acidic pH and showed the sharp decrease when salts were added. ${\gamma}$-PGA exhibited the property of the polyelectrolyte showing the .sharp decrease of intrinsic viscosity by the addition of NaCl, and intrinsic viscosity of dilute solution with the low concentration of NaCl was exponentially dependent on temperature and its temperature dependency increased with increasing NaCl concentration. The chain stiffness, coil overlap parameter and critical concentration of Na+-PGA were 0.08, 5.25 and 0.07g/d$\ell$, respectively.

Numerical analysis has been carried out to investigate laminar convective heat transfer at zero gravity in a tube for supercritical water near the thermodynamic critical point. Fluid flow and heat transfer are strongly coupled due to large variation of thermodynamic and transport properties such as density, specific heat, viscosity, and thermal conductivity near the critical point. Heat transfer characteristics in the developing region of the tube show transition behavior between liquid-like and gas-like phases with a peak in heat transfer coefficient distribution near the pseudo critical point. The peak of the heat transfer coefficient depends on pressure and wall heat flux rather than inlet temperature and Reynolds number. Results of the modeling provide convective heat transfer characteristics including velocity vectors, temperature, and the properties as well as the heat transfer coefficient. The effect of proximity on the critical point is considered and a heat transfer correlation is suggested for the peak of Nusselt number in the tube.
Nonlinear vibration and instability of cylindrical shell conveying fluid-nanoparticles mixture flow are studied in this article. The surrounding elastic medium is modeled by Pasternak foundation. Mixture rule is used for obtaining the effective viscosity and density of the fluid-nanoparticles mixture flow. The material properties of the elastic medium and cylindrical shell are assumed temperature-dependent. Employing first order shear deformation theory (FSDT), the motion equations are derived using energy method and Hamilton's principal. Differential quadrature method (DQM) is used for obtaining the frequency and critical fluid velocity. The effects of different parameters such as volume percent of nanoparticles, boundary conditions, geometrical parameters of cylindrical shell, temperature change, elastic foundation and fluid velocity are shown on the frequency and critical fluid velocity of the structure. Results show that with increasing volume percent of nanoparticles in the fluid, the frequency and critical fluid velocity will be increases.
Highly viscous biopolymer from alkali-tolerant Bacillus sp. was purified and its solution properties were investigated. The intrinsic viscosities for crude biopolymer and biopolymers purified by dialysis or CPC(cetylpyridinium chloride) treatment were 58.24, 73.60 and 42.18 dL/g, respectively. The intrinsic viscosity of biopolymer showed the maximum value at the neutral pH but it was decreased remarkably at the alkaline or acidic pH. Biopolymer exhibited the property of polyelectrolyte, showing the sharp decrease of intrinsic viscosity by the addition of NaCl. Intrinsic viscosity of dilute solution at the low NaCl concentration was exponentially dependent on temperature and its temperature dependency was increased with NaCl concentrations. The chain stiffness, coil overlap parameter, and critical concentration were 0.09, 5.25 and 0.07g/dL, respectively. Temperature dependency on intrinsic viscosity of biopolymer solution was different each other at $45^{\circ}C$. Flow activation energies at temperatures above $45^{\circ}C$ were constant, while those at temperatures below $45^{\circ}C$ increased with increase of added NaCl concentration.
A phenomenological theory of viscosity previously proposed by the present authors8 is applied to the corresponding state theory for the viscosity of liquid. Through the process of the formulation of the corresponding state equation, we can find the simple viscosity equation with no parameters in a reduced form. The liquid viscosities of various substances can be calculated using this equation when we know only the values of the molecular weight and critical constant of substances. A corresponding state equation for the viscosity of liquid from this theory may be applicable to predicting viscosities of various substances under varying temperature and pressure. As a result, this equation may be widely applied to chemical engineering.
