Modal identification based on ambient vibration data has attracted extensive attention in the past few decades. Since the excitation for ambient vibration tests is mainly from the environmental effects such as wind and traffic loading and no artificial excitation is applied, the signal to noise (s/n) ratio of the data acquired plays an important role in mode identifiability. Under ambient vibration conditions, certain modes may not be identifiable due to a low s/n ratio. This paper presents a study on the mode identifiability of an instrumented cable-stayed bridge with the use of acceleration response data measured by a long-term structural health monitoring system. A recently developed fast Bayesian FFT method is utilized to perform output-only modal identification. In addition to identifying the most probable values (MPVs) of modal parameters, the associated posterior uncertainties can be obtained by this method. Likewise, the power spectral density of modal force can be identified, and thus it is possible to obtain the modal s/n ratio. This provides an efficient way to investigate the mode identifiability. Three groups of data are utilized in this study: the first one is 10 data sets including six collected under normal wind conditions and four collected during typhoons; the second one is three data sets with wind speeds of about 7.5 m/s; and the third one is some blind data. The first two groups of data are used to perform ambient modal identification and help to estimate a critical value of the s/n ratio above which the deficient mode is identifiable, while the third group of data is used to perform verification. A couple of fundamental modes are identified, including the ones in the vertical and transverse directions respectively and coupled in both directions. The uncertainty and s/n ratio of the deficient mode are investigated and discussed. A critical value of the modal s/n ratio is suggested to evaluate the mode identifiability of the deficient mode. The work presented in this paper could provide a base for the vibration-based condition assessment in future.
In this study, the static and modal analyses to find the characteristic of eigenvalues for a towed cable were with a free boundary condition at the bottom end carried out with numerical study. The resulting numerical code with finite element method was used to study sample problems for a cable with towing speeds. After tracing the equilibrium state with a towing speed through the static analysis, modal analysis on the basis of static results was performed. The static top tension for a critical towing speed is nearly 50 percent of what it was for a free hanging pipe. From static analyses, it is found that towing speed has a noticeable effect on top tension of a towed pipe. At a high towing speed, differences between the first and second periods become larger. Compared to the fundamental period for a free hanging pipe, that for a towed pipe with a critical towing speed is approximately 1.4 times larger. This result is very important point in that the lock in condition and tension of the towed cable system with top excitation can be predicted. The corrected close form solution to solve natural periods for a towed cable was presented in this study. The code is validated by comparison of the results of theoretical and numerical studies. Two results were in very good agreement. This study can contribute to predicting the lock-in condition and tension for a towed cable or pipe with top excitation.

The most critical rotating parts of a gas turbine engine are turbine blades and disc, given that they must operate under severe conditions such as high turbine inlet temperature, high speeds, and high compression ratios. Owing to theses operating conditions and high rotational speed energy, some failures caused by turbine disks and blades are categorized into catastrophic and critical, respectively. To maximize the margin of structural integrity, we aim to optimize the vulnerable area of disc-blade interface region. Then, to check the robustness of the obtained optimized solution, we evaluated structural reliability under uncertainties such as dimensional tolerance and fatigue life variant. The results highlighted the necessity for and limitations of optimization which is one of deterministic methods, and pointed out the requirement for introducing reliability-based design optimization which is one of stochastic methods. Thermal-structural coupled-filed analysis and contact analysis are performed for them.

Composite propeller shafts for a vehicle have major advantages such as reduction of vibration, noise, and weight. A propeller shaft was designed with a carbon/epoxy composite material using the finite element method(FEM), and prototype shafts for tests were manufactured by the filament winding manufacturing process. In order to verify the design procedure by FEM, Two kinds of experimental tests were carried out using a FFT analyzer with impact hammers and a critical speed measuring apparatus for measurement of natural frequencies and critical speeds. The difference between the FEM analysis result and the test result was less than 3.4%, showing FEM analysis results to be acceptable. The parametric study was focused on determining the factor affecting the vibration and strength characteristics of the propeller shaft based on FEM. In investigation of the change in natural frequency without an increase in propeller shaft weight, it was found that the winding angle is the most significant factor affecting the vibration and strength characteristics.
In this study, the load analysis of a composite canard aircraft is performed numerically. Excel
visual basic program for PC is used to calculate aerodynamic coefficients, loads and moments
etc.. The basic data required for the load analysis such as aircraft configuration and dimension,
parts and its weight and coordinate etc. are obtained from Catia modeling, measurement or
material density. Aircraft weight, center of gravity, inertia moment, structural design speeds, wing
load distribution, forces and moments are evaluated by using these data. V-n diagram is also
represented for selecting critical loads applied to the wing and fuselage. The V-n diagram is
investigated to decide the flight envelope of canard aircraft for design speed VA, VC, VD and
load factor +3.8G, -1.52G at maximum weight of 2,573 lbs and sea level.
In the future, the results of the wing and fuselage load analysis is to represented by using
selected critical loads.
To ensure the flutter stability of three-tower suspension bridges under skew wind, by using the computational procedure of 3D refined flutter analysis of long-span bridges under skew wind, in which structural nonlinearity, the static wind action(also known as the aerostatic effect) and the full-mode coupling effect etc., are fully considered, the flutter stability of a three-tower suspension bridge-the Taizhou Bridge over the Yangtze River in completion and during the deck erection is numerically investigated under the constant uniform skew wind, and the influences of skew wind and aerostatic effects on the flutter stability of the bridge under the service and construction conditions are assessed. The results show that the flutter critical wind speeds of three-tower suspension bridge under service and construction conditions fluctuate with the increase of wind yaw angle instead of a monotonous cosine rule as the decomposition method proposed, and reach the minimum mostly in the case of skew wind. Both the skew wind and aerostatic effects significantly reduce the flutter stability of three-tower suspension bridge under the service and construction conditions, and the combined skew wind and aerostatic effects further deteriorate the flutter stability. Both the skew wind and aerostatic effects do not change the evolution of flutter stability of the bridge during the deck erection, and compared to the service condition, they lead to a greater decrease of flutter critical wind speed of the bridge during deck erection, and the influence of the combined skew wind and aerostatic effects is more prominent. Therefore, the skew wind and aerostatic effects must be considered accurately in the flutter analysis of three-tower suspension bridges.
This work proposes a theoretical and numerical study on the behavior of a tapered shaft rotor made of composite materials by the classical version h and the version p of the finite element method. Hierarchical form functions are used to define the model. The purpose of this paper is to determine the expressions of the kinetic and potential energies of the tree necessary for the results of the equations of motion. A comparison between the version h and the p version of the finite element method of the functions of polynomial and trigonometric hierarchical forms with six degrees of freedom per node, of a composite tapered and cylindrical shaft which rotates at a constant speed about its axis. It is found that when the number of functions of form (the version p) is increased, the solution converges. It is also observed that the conicity of the shaft increases the rigidity with respect to a uniform shaft having the same mechanical properties. The numerical simulation allowed us to determine the natural frequencies and the critical speeds of the composite shaft systems are compared with those available in the literature and the effectiveness of the methods used are discussed.

It is desirable to choose a high-k material having a large band offset with the tunneling oxide and a deep trapping level for use as the charge trapping layer to achieve high PIE (Programming/erasing) speeds and good reliability, respectively. In this paper, charge trapping and tunneling characteristics of high-k hafnium oxide ($HfO_2$) layer with various thicknesses were investigated for applications of tunnel barrier engineered nonvolatile memory. A critical thickness of $HfO_2$ layer for suppressing the charge trapping and enhancing the tunneling sensitivity of tunnel barrier were developed. Also, the charge trap centroid and charge trap density were extracted by constant current stress (CCS) method. As a result, the optimization of $HfO_2$ thickness considerably improved the performances of non-volatile memory(NVM).

Up to now a wide variety of researches on inpipe inspection robots have been introduced, but it still seems to be difficult to construct a robot providing mobility sufficient to navigate inside the complicated configuration of underground pipelines. This paper introduces a robot called MRINSPECT IV(Multifunctional Robotic Crawler for inpipe inSPECTion IV) for the inspection of urban gas pipelines with a nominal 4-inch inside diameter. The proposed robot can freely move along the basic configuration of pipelines such as along horizontal or vertical pipelines. Moreover it can travel along reducers, elbows, and steer in the branches by modulating the speeds of driving modules. Especially, its capability for steering in tile three-dimensional pipeline configuration has a competative edge over the other ones and provides excellent mobility in navigation. Its critical points in the design and construction are introduced and results of experiments are given.
For high performance rotating machinery, unstable vibrations may occur caused by hydrodynamic forces such as oil film forces, clearance excitation forces generated by the working fluid, and etc. In order to improve the availability one has to take into account the vibrations very accurately. When designing a rotating machinery, the stability behavior and the resonance response can be obtained by calculation of the complex eigenvalues. A suitable modifications of seal and/or bearing design may effectively improve the stability and the response of a rotor system. This paper deals with the optimum length and clearance of seals and bearings to minimize the resonance response(Q factor) and to maximize the logarithmic decrement in the operating speed under the constraints of design variables. Also, for an avoidance of resonance region from the operating speed, an optimization technique has been used to yield the critical speeds as far from the operating speed as possible. The optimization method is used by the genetic algorithm, which is a search algorithm based on the mechanics of natural selection and natural genetics. The results show that the optimum design of seals and bearings can significantly improve the resonance and the stability of the pump rotor system.
