The Leakage and Rotordynamic Analysis of A Combination-Type-Staggered-Labyrinth Seal for A Steam Turbine (스팀 터빈용 조합형 엇갈린 래버린스 실의 누설량 및 동특성 해석)

  • Governing equations and numerical solution methods are derived for the analysis of a combination-type-staggered-labyrinth seal used in high performance steam turbines. A bulk flow is assumed for each combination-type-staggered-labyrinth cavity. Axial flow through a throttling labyrinth strip is determined by Neumann's leakage equation and circumferential flow is assumed to be completely turbulent in the labyrinth cavity. Moody's wall-friction-factor formula is used for the calculation of wall shear stresses. For the reaction force developed by the seal, linearized zeroth-order and first-order perturbation equations are developed for small motion near the centered position. Integration of the resultant first-order pressure distribution along and around the seal defines the rotordynamic coefficients of the combination-type-staggered-labyrinth seal. Theoretical results of leakage and rotordynamic characteristics for the IP4-stage seal of USC (ultra super critical) steam turbine are shown with the effect of sump pressure, the number of throttling labyrinth strip, and rotor speed.

  • With automobiles sharply increasing in numbers worldwide, we are faced with critical social issues such as traffic accidents, traffic jams, environmental pollution, and economic inefficiency. In response, research on ITS is promoted mainly by regions with advanced automotive industry such as the U.S., Europe, and Japan. While Korea is working on moving forward in the global market through developing and turning to global standards systems related to ASV (Advanced Safety Vehicle), the country is not fully prepared for such projects. The purpose of ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) is to control a vehicle's longitudinal speed and distance and minimize driver workload. Such a system should be valuable in preventing accidents, as it reduces driver workload in the 21st-century world of telematics created by development of the automobile culture industry. In this light, the thesis presents a method to test and evaluate ACC system and a mathematical method to assess distance. For the proposed test and evaluation, theoretical values are tested with vehicle test and a database is acquired, by using vehicles equipped with an ACC system. Theoretical evaluation criteria for developing ACC system may be used and scenario-specific evaluation methods may find useful application through testing the formula proposed by comparing the database and mathematical method.

The Deformation and Breaking Load of the Fishing Hook by the Tensile Test (인장시험에 의한 낚시의 변형과 파단하중)

  • The fishing hooks were tested for breaking and unbending due to plastic deformation of the material. Study of tensile test is not complicated, but has not even worked out fully enough, especially when the test specimen is subjected to plastic deformation. The fishing hook is subjected to unbending stress and the critical section is a Point which is furthest from the line of action of the forces. The dynamic force of fish during jerks depends on their speed of movement and body weight, the kinetic energy corresponding to it and also on the rlastic displacement of the rigging which absorb the energy. Six kinds of hook were tested by the dynamometer under tensile speed 290mm/min (subscript s) and 780mm/min (subscript f). According to their results, the breaking load(B: kg) can be induced with the formula $B={\alpha}wd^2+\beta$ where w(mm) is the distance between the barb base and the lower shank and d(mm) is diameter. The coefficients of the formula for the round hooks(R) and the angular hooks(A) are approximately as follows: $$R:\;\alpha_{s}=0.5,\;\beta_{s}=1.6,\;\alpha_{f}=0.4,\;\beta_{f}=1.4$$ $$A:\;\alpha_{s}=1.1,\;\beta_{s}=2.0,\;\alpha_{f}=1.0,\;\beta_{f}=0.9$$ The ratio of $B_{f}\;to\;B_{s}$ is corresponding to 0.8. The ratio of deformation(X) that is moved distance of barb base at break to the distance(H) between head base and barb base is about $50\%$. Further study should be carried out on the subject of impact and fatigue test under the same condition which is exerted force by the hooked fish.

Filtering Rate with Effect of Water Temperature and Size of Two Farming Ascidians Styela clava and S. plicata, and a Farming Mussel Mytilus edulis (수온과 개체크기에 따른 양식산 미더덕, 흰멍게, 진주담치의 여수율)

  • Filtering rates of two farming ascidians Styela clava and S. plicata, and of a farming mussel Mytilus edulis were experimentally investigated with reference to effects of water temperature and size. Absorptiometric determinations of filtering rates were carried out in a closed system with experimental animals being decreased indicate dyes neutral red. Optical density (OD) of 440 nm in path length 22 mm cell used as the indication of food particles absorption was appeared directly in proportion with the concentration of neutral red dyes. The filtering rate F is calculated by Kim's equation $F\;=\;V(1-e^{-z})$, where V is the water volume ($\ell$) in the experimental jar, and Z is the decreasing coefficient of OD as meaning of instantaneous removal speed as In $C_t\;=\;In\;C_{o}-Z{\cdot}t$, in this formula $C_t$ is OD at the time t. Filtering rate of S. clava increased as exponential function with increasing temperature while not over critical limit, and the critical temperature for filtering rate was assumed to be between $28^{\circ}C$ and $29^{\circ}C$. In case of S. plicata, the critical temperature was to be below $13^{\circ}C$, and through the temperature range $15\~25^{\circ}C$ appeared a little difference in level even though with significant. M. edulis was not appear any significant effects by water temperature less than $29^{\circ}C$.   • Filtering rates of Crassostrea gigas were experimentally investigated with reference to effects of water temperature and size. Absorptiometric determinations of filtering rates with oysters being fed diatom Chaetoceros calcirtans were carried out in a closed system. Optical density of 675nm in path length 100mm cell used as the indication of food particles absorption was appeared directly In proportion with the concentration of diatom pigment $chlorophyll-\alpha$. In the closed system where $C_0$ is $OD_{675}$ at initial time 0, $C_t$, at time t, and Z is the decreasing coefficient of OD as meaning of instantaneous removal speed, then $C_t=C_0{\cdot} e^{-2t}$, $Z=In(C_t/C_0)/t$. On the assumption that the filtering rate is constant, then removal rate per unit time (d) is $d=-e^{-z}$. If t is used to time unit of hour (hr), the filtering rate (FR) in I/hr is given by $FR=V{\cdot}d=V(1-e^{-z})$, where V is the water volume (I) of the experimental vessel. Filtering rate increased as exponential function with increasing temperature while not over critical limit. The critical temperature for filtering rate was assumed to be between $28^{\circ}C$ and $29^{\circ}C$. And the weight exponent for filtering rate is 0.223. The model formula derived from the results as FR, $Ihr^{-1}$ = $Exp(0.208{\cdot}T-4.324){\cdot} (DW)^{0.223}$ (T<29 $^{\circ}C)$ where T is water temperature $(^{\circ}C

  • A dryout mechanism model for rectangular narrow channels at high pressure conditions is developed by assuming that the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability triggered the occurrence of dryout. This model combines the advantages of theoretical analysis and empirical correlation. The unknown coefficients in the theoretical derivation are supported by the experimental data. Meanwhile, the decisive restriction of the experimental conditions on the applicability of the empirical correlation is avoided. The expression of vapor phase velocity at the time of dryout is derived, and the empirical correlation of liquid film thickness is introduced. Since the CHF value obtained from the liquid film thickness should be the same as the value obtained from the Kelvin-Helmholtz critical stability under the same condition, the convergent CHF value is obtained by iteratively calculating. Comparing with the experimental data under the pressure of 6.89-13.79 MPa, the average error of the model is -15.4% with the 95% confidence interval [-20.5%, -10.4%]. And the pressure has a decisive influence on the prediction accuracy of this model. Compared with the existing dryout code, the calculation speed of this model is faster, and the calculation accuracy is improved. This model, with great portability, could be applied to different objects and working conditions by changing the expression of the vapor phase velocity when the dryout phenomenon is triggered and the calculation formula of the liquid film.
