  • Experimental studies on the aerodynamic coupling effect on natural frequencies, critical speed and flutter instability of DVD disks are investigated in this paper. The experimental results are compared with the theoretical analyses where the aerodynamic effects are represented in terms of elastic, lift and damping and stiffness components. The experiments are performed using a vacuum chamber and DVD disks rotating in vacuum, open and enclosure with several different gaps between disk and wall. The following three results are given. One is that the aerodynamic effect by the surrounding air reduces the natural frequencies and critical speeds of the vibration modes. The second is that natural frequency decreases as the disk-wall gap is decreased. Finally, it is shown that the disk vibration is reduced as the gap between the disk and the rigid wall decreases.

  • A new approach to the critical speed calculation of general multi-mesh gear chain system included bevel gear is presented. A transfer matrix mode! based on Hibner's branch method is developed and the natural properties of the branched rotor system are calculated with using the ${\lambda}$-matrix formulation. A Campbell diagram, in which the excitation sources caused by the mass unbalance of the rotors, misalignment and the transmitted errors of the gearing are considered, shows that, at the neighborhood of the operating speed, there are the two critical speeds amplifying the first mode and the eighth mode.

  • In this paper, as the first step to assess and enhance the reliability of Korea High Speed Train, auxiliary power system is selected and reliability analysis is carried out. The auxiliary power system is classified into subsystems and functional analysis is conducted. Reliability block diagrams are drawn and reliability parametric analysis is performed. Analysis results show that the reliability of auxiliary power system depends on critical items. To grow the system reliability, activities should be concentrated on improvement of critical items.

  • Passive control of the flutter condition of suspension bridges using a combined vertical and torsional tuned mass damper (TMD) system is presented. The proposed TMD system has two degrees of freedom, which are tuned close to the frequencies corresponding to vertical and torsional symmetric modes of the bridge which get coupled during flutter. The bridge-TMD system is analyzed for finding critical wind speed for flutter using a finite element approach. Thomas Suspension Bridge is analyzed as an illustrative example. The effectiveness of the TMD system in increasing the critical flutter speed of the bridge is investigated through a parametric study. The results of the parametric study led to the optimization of some important parameters such as mass ratio, TMD damping ratio, tuning frequency, and number of TMD systems which provide maximum critical flutter wind speed of the suspension bridge.

  • The study of rigid roadway pavement under dynamic traffic loads with variable velocity is investigated in this paper. Rigid roadway pavement is modeled as a rectangular damped orthotropic plate supported by elastic Pasternak foundation. The boundary supports of the plate are the steel dowels and tie bars which provide elastic vertical support and rotational restraint. The natural frequencies of the system and the mode shapes are solved using two transcendental equations, obtained from the solution of two auxiliary Levy's type problems, known as the Modified Bolotin Method. The dynamic moving traffic load is expressed as a concentrated load of harmonically varying magnitude, moving straight along the plate with a variable velocity. The dynamic response of the plate is obtained on the basis of orthogonality properties of eigenfunctions. Numerical example results show that the velocity and the angular frequency of the loads affected the maximum dynamic deflection of the rigid roadway pavement. It is also shown that a critical speed of the load exists. If the moving traffic load travels at critical speed, the rectangular plate becomes infinite in amplitude.

  • In this paper, Automatic Dynamic Balancer(ADB) was simulated and investigated to use at the high speed rotating chuck for the friction welding. In the limited computer simulations and experiments that have been presently carried out, several conclusions have been found. Above critical speed of the rotating system, ADB can balance the rotating disk. Therefore, it can be predicted that ADB can make an uniform flash during the friction welding.

  • The support bearing requires high DN to raise specific energy efficiency for the state of the art rotating machine with high speed. Especially for the system has a big rotor(670 kgf) with high speed(about one million DNs) such as the pulsed generator, the selection of the bearing and lubrication method are very important. So the study for the critical speed of hollow rotor as well in accordance with high speed rotor and a full analysis are needed for rotor bearing system. This paper describes the analysis for rotor bearing system of pulsed generator compared with experimental data. The bearing and lubrication method are discussed as well with experimental data.

  • In this study, the increasing gear boxes for the high speed vertical in-line centrifugal pump are developed through rotor dynamic analysis. The developed increasing gear boxes are two kinds for 18000rpm and 25000rpm at the output shaft. The gear sets suitable for high speed and high load are manufactured by investigating AGMA bending strength and AGMA surface strength severely. The rotor dynamic analysis on gear sets and bearings is performed in order to avoid the critical speeds and other troubles. As a result of study, the two increasing gear boxes for the high speed vertical in-line centrifugal pump are designed and manufactured.

  • Vibration/noise analysis as well as strength of planetary gear train are considered in order to develop a transmission for a high-speed ship. The vibration model of a gear pair is developed with considering the elastic deformation of the active teeth and the body to be a rigid. Excitation forces of the transmission system are considered as the mass unbalance of the rotors. misalignment and a function of gear transmission error which comes from the modified tooth surface. A Campbell diagram, in which the excitation sources caused by the mass unbalance of the rotors. misalignment and the transmitted errors of the gearing are considered shows that, at the operating speed, there are not the critical speed.
