  • To theoretically predict knock occurrence in S. I. engine as a function of engine design and operating parameters, transient local temperature and pressure, mixture density of flame front in combustion period are calculated. We next determined normal combustion period and auto ignition period of end gas using the prediction method on occurrence of spark knock which we suggested. We predict knock occurrence in S. I. engine by comparing consecutively normal combustion period with the auto ignition period of end gas in combustion period. Engine design and operating parameters such as compression ratio, engine speed, spark timing, inlet temperature and pressure are taken into account in this calculations. The predicted result are well matched with the experimental results in turbocharged engine. Therefore, this method will provide the systematic guideline for designing engines in view of knocking limits.

  • Background: Non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) ensures adequate gas exchange during bronchoscopy in spontaneously breathing, hypoxemic patients, thus avoiding endotracheal intubation. However, in some patients, endotracheal intubation is eventually required after bronchoscopy. This study investigated the incidence of intubation and predictors of a need for emergency intubation prior to NPPV bronchoscopy initiation. Methods: On a retrospective basis, we reviewed the medical records of 36 patients (median age, 55 years; interquartile range [IQR], 43~65 years) with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure who required NPPV during bronchoscopy between January 2005 and October 2007. Results: All patients were hypoxemic (median $PaO_2/FiO_2$ ratio 155; IQR 90~190), but tolerated bronchoscopy with NPPV support. SOFA score and SAPS II score immediately before NPPV initiation were 4 (3~7) and 36 (30~42), respectively. Seventeen (47%) patients needed endotracheal intubation at a median time of 22 (2~50) hours after bronchoscopy. Patients who needed intubation after bronchoscopy had a higher in-hospital mortality (11 [65%] vs. 4 [21%], p=0.017). Upon multiple logistic regression analysis, the need for intubation after bronchoscopy was independently associated with a $P_aO_2/FiO_2$ ratio (OR, 0.961; 95% CI, 0.924~0.999; p=0.047) immediately before NPPV initiation for bronchoscopy. Conclusion: The severity of the hypoxemia immediately prior to NPPV initiation for bronchoscopy was associated with the need for intubation after bronchoscopy in patients with hypoxemic respiratory failure.

  • This work was intended to study the effect of a partial pressure ratio and a total pressure of reactive gases on the properties of TiC$_{x}$N$_{1-x}$ . coated layer. In this regard, various TiC$_{x}$N$_{1-x}$ coatings were synthesized with C2112 and N2 Mixture gas of different compositions by Arc Ion Plating process which has been highlighted for an industrial purpose. It was revealed from colors and X-ray diffraction patterns that the concentration of carbon of a TiC$_{x}$N$_{1-x}$ coating increases with a partial pressure ratio (PC$_{2}$H$_{2}$/PN$_{2}$) as well as a total pressure Of $C_{2}$H$_{2}$ and N$_{2}$ mixture gas. Accordingly, the hardness of TiC$_{x}$N$_{1-x}$ coated layer increased but the adhesion to the substrate of SKH 51 was degraded. On the other hand, the deposition rate was independent of a partial pressure ratio and a total pressure of mixture gas. It was found that a uniform gas distribution is critical for an industrial application since the composition of a coating depends strongly on the location of a substrate inside of the furnace. As a result of milling tests with different TiC$_{x}$N$_{1-x}$ coated end mills, the one which has a low carbon concentration was better than others studied in this work.d in this work.

  • After produce the extracted wood to silicic acid gel, sodium carbonate and silicon dioxide with application of the making method for carbon dioxide, ignition time, ignition temperature, mass loss rate and critical heat flux are measured according to external radiation source (20, 25, 35 and 50 $kW/m^2$). From the results, pressure impregnation wood to use with water glass and carbon dioxide has fire retardant performance at heat flux (less than 20 $kW/m^2$) of Pre-Flashover fires. If we find out the excellent maxing ratio through continuously study, it might be decided to be able to be utilized as fire-retardant wood.

  • The behavior of cryogenic liquid stored in a closed cryogenic tank has been studied at various liquid levels, as a function of pressure and temperature on time, assuming heat leak(NER) is 0.7%/day. The pressure depends, as expected, on the liquid-vapor ratio in a tank. The calculation shows that if liquid level is as high as 90%,much higher than the critical volume ration, in a closed tank of designed pressure 11 bar, it takes 5.4 to 15days for the entire volume of the tank to be filled with liquid and 11 to 22 days for the tank to be exploded. If a closed tank is full of liquid, it is extremely dangerous because of abrupt pressure increase so that the safety devices are necessary to vent out pressurized gas. These phenomena can be explained with the liquid heat capacity, latent heat and compressibility.

  • High-speed rotors set a lot of high vibration and stability problems especially when the speed of rotation is going through the first or the second critical speed. The aim of this paper is to investigate the possibility of an active control of a rigid rotor with squeeze film damper which has a good configuration of easily controlled end seal clearances and/or adjustment of a feed pressure. A theoretical method is presented and some numerical results are compared with test measurements. Both results show that the vibration or bit sizes are decreased when the end seal gap decreases with constant supply pressure, and when the supply oil pressure increases with constant seal gap. The experimental results show also a pleasing similarity on both orbit sizes and their decrement ratio compared with theoretical analysis. The possibility of an active control with the squeeze film damper was verified by adjusting the seal gap and the supply pressure.

  • The present experimental and numerical investigations are performed for the characteristics of transitional flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one rotating. The pressure losses and skin- friction coefficients have been measured for the fully developed flow of water and glycerine-water solution (44%) with the inner cylinder rotating at speed of 0∼600 nm, respectively. The transitional flow has been examined by the measurement of pressure losses to reveal the relation of the Reynolds and Rossby numbers with the skin-friction coefficients. The occurrence of transition has been checked by the gradient changes of pressure losses and skin-friction coefficients with respect to the Reynolds numbers. The increasing rate of skin-friction coefficient due to the rotation is uniform for laminar flow regime, whereas it is suddenly reduced for transitional flow regime and, then, it is gradually declined for turbulent flow regime.

  • It has been known that there is a viscoelastic instability in the channel flow past a cylinder at high Deborah (De) number. Some of our numerical simulations and a boundary layer analysis indicated that this instability is related to the shear flow in the gap between the cylinder and the channel walls in our previous work. The critical condition for instability initiation may be related to an inflection velocity profile generated by the normal stress near the cylinder surface. At high De, the elastic normal stress coupling with the streamline curvature is responsible for the shear instability, which has been recognized by the community. In this study, an instability criterion for the flow problem is proposed based on the analysis on the pressure gradient and some supporting numerical simulations. The critical De number for various model fluids is given. It increases with the geometrical aspect ratio h/R (half channel width/cylinder radius) and depends on a viscosity ratio ${\beta}$(polymer viscosity/total viscosity) of the model. A shear thinning first normal stress coefficient will delay the instability. An excellent agreement between the predicted critical Deborah number and reported experiments is obtained.

  • In order to investigate the operating characteristics of a supersonic steam ejector, the axisymmetric, compressible, Reynolds-averaged, Navier-Stokes computations are performed using a finite volume method. The secondary and back pressures of the ejector system with a second throat are changed to investigate their effects on the suction mass flow. Three operation modes of the steam ejector system, the critical mode, subcritical mode and back flow mode, are discussed to predict the critical suction mass flow. The present computations are validated with some experimental results. The secondary and back pressures of the supersonic steam ejector significantly affect the critical suction mass flow. The present computations predict the experimented critical mass flow with fairly good accuracy. A good correlation is obtained for the critical suction mass flow. The present results show that provided the primary nozzle configuration and secondary pressure are known, we can predict the critical mass flow with good accuracy.

  • We have investigated the electrical transport properties of polycrystalline tantalum nitride (TaNx) films. Various compositions of tantalum (nitride) thin films have been deposited on SiO2 substrates by reactive DC magnetron sputtering while changing the ratio of nitrogen partial pressure. The substrate temperature was maintained at 283 K during deposition. X-ray diffraction analyses indicated the presence of α-Ta and β-Ta phases in the Ta film deposited in pure argon atmosphere, while fcc-TaNx phases appeared in the sputtering gas mixture of argon and nitrogen. The N/Ta atomic ratio in the film increased ranging from 0.36 to 1.07 for nitrogen partial pressure from 7 to 20.7%. The superconducting transition temperatures of the TaNx thin films were measured to be greater than 3.86 K with a maximum of 5.34 K. The electrical resistivity of TaNx thin film was in the range of 177-577 𝜇Ωcm and increased with an increase in nitrogen content. The upper critical filed at zero temperature for a TaN0.87 thin film was estimated to exceed 11.3 T, while it showed the lowest Tc = 3.86 K among the measured superconducting TaNx thin films. We try to explain the behavior of the increase of the residual resistivity and the upper critical field for TaNx thin films with the nitrogen content by using the combined role of the intergrain Coulomb effect and disorder effect by grain boundaries.
