  • The differential equations governing the shape of displacement for the shallow parabolic arch subjected to multiple dynamic point step loads were derived and solved numerically The Runge-Kutta method was used to perform the time integrations. Hinged-hinged end constraint was considered. Based on the Budiansky-Roth criterion, the dynamic critical point step loads were calculated and the dynamic stability regions for such loads were determined by using the data of critical loads obtained in this study.

  • A nonlinear theory is presented for the fluctuations of intermediates in the Brusselator near the critical point caused by diffusion. The method used is the two time scaling method different from the conventional method in the sense that a slight nonlinear effect is included in the initial time region where the linear approximation is conventionally valid. The result obtained by the nonlinear theory shows that fluctuations close to the critical point approach the value of a stable steady state or deviate infinitely from an unstable steady state, as time goes to infinity, while the linear theory gives approximately time-independent fluctuations. A brief discussion is given for the correlation at a time between fluctuating intermediates when the system approaches a stable steady state.

  • The most controversial topics in plasma sprayed ceramic coating system are recently mechanical properties such as bond strength, cohesive strength, toughness and so on. Determination of bond strength of coatings is one of the most important problems. In the industry, the bond strength of coating system has been estimated by Pull-off test(ASTM standard C633-79). But, without a fixed jig and specimen, it is impossible to obtain the bond strength. Therefore, it is necessary to study the critical fracture load on interface of the coating by indentation test. Because the critical fracture load plays an important role in evaluating the bond strength for plasma sprayed ceramic coating system. So, we have estimated critical fracture load in plasma sprayed ceramic coating system, and it was shown that inverse relationship between the cross-section hardness of coating and the critical fracture load(Pc). In case of the high load(1kgf, 2kgf) in $Al_{2}O_{3}+13%TiO_{2}$, it was found that the critical point(Pco), which the coating was broken on.

  • Risk assessment is an important phase of risk management. It is the stage in which risk is measured thoroughly to achieve effective management. Some factors such as probability and impact of risk have been used in the literature related to construction projects. Because in high-rise projects safety issues are paramount, this study has tried to develop a quantifying technique that takes into account three factors: probability, impact and Safety Performance Index (SPI) where the SPI is defined as the capability of an appropriate response to reduce or limit the effect of an event after its occurrence with regard to safety pertaining to a project. Regarding risk-related literatures which cover an uncertain subject, the proposed method developed in this research is based on a fuzzy logic approach. This approach entails a questionnaire in which the subjectivity and vagueness of responses is dealt with by using triangular fuzzy numbers instead of linguistic terms. This method returns a Risk Critical Point (RCP) on a zoning chart that places risks under categories: critical, critical-probability, critical-impact, and non-critical. The high-rise project in the execution phase has been taken as a case study to confirm the applicability of the proposed method. The monitoring results showed that the RCP method has the inherent ability to be extended to subsequent applications in the phases of risk response and control.

  • Let m be a positive integer. We show that for any given real number ${\alpha}\;{\in}\;[0,\;1]$ and complex number $\mu$ with $|\mu|{\leq}1$ which satisfy $e^{2{\pi}i{\alpha}}{\mu}^m\;{\neq}\;1$, there exists a Blaschke product B of degree 2m + 1 which has a fixed point of multiplier ${\mu}^m$ at the point at infinity such that the restriction of the Blaschke product B on the unit circle is a critical circle map with rotation number $\alpha$. Moreover if the given real number $\alpha$ is irrational of bounded type, then a modified Blaschke product of B is quasiconformally conjugate to some rational function of degree m + 1 which has a fixed point of multiplier ${\mu}^m$ at the point at infinity and a Siegel disk whose boundary is a quasicircle containing its critical point.

  • This paper investigates the dependency of the critical content for electrical conductivity of carbon powder-filled polymer matrix composites with different matrixes as a function of the carbon powder content (volume fraction) to find the break point of the relationships between the carbon powder content and the electrical conductivity. The electrical conductivity jumps by as much as ten orders of magnitude at the break point. The critical carbon powder content corresponding to the break point in electrical conductivity varies according to the matrix species and tends to increase with an increase in the surface tension of the matrix. In order to explain the dependency of the critical carbon content on the matrix species, a simple equation (${V_c}^*=[1+ 3({{\gamma}_c}^{1/2}-{{\gamma}_m}^{1/2})^2/({\Delta}q_cR]^{-1}$) was derived under some assumptions, the most important of which was that when the interfacial excess energy introduced by particles of carbon powder into the matrix reaches a universal value (${\Delta}q_c$), the particles of carbon powder begin to coagulate so as to avoid any further increase in the energy and to form networks that facilitate electrical conduction. The equation well explains the dependency through surface tension, surface tensions between the particles of carbon powder.

  • It is well known that critical points of the total scalar curvature functional S on the space of all smooth Riemannian structures of volume 1 on a compact manifold M are exactly the Einstein metrics. When the domain of S is restricted to the space of constant scalar curvature metrics, there has been a conjecture that a critical point is isometric to a standard sphere. In this paper we investigate the relationship between the first Betti number and stable minimal surfaces, and study the analytic properties of stable minimal surfaces in M for n = 3.

  • The cutting thickness of ultra-precision machining is generally very small, only a few micrometer or even down to the order of a few nanometer. In such case, a basic understanding of the mechanism on the micro-machining process is is necessary to produce a high quality surface. When machining at very small depths of cut, metal flow near a rounded tool edge become important. In this paper a finite element analysis is presented to calculate the stagnation point on the tool edge or critical depth of cut below which no cutting occurs. From the simulation, the effects of the cutting speed on the critical depths of cut were calculated and discussed. Also the transition of the stagnation point according to the increase of the depths of cut was observed.
