Revisiting the Nexus of Foreign Direct Investment, Financial Development, and Economic Growth: The Case of Emerging Economies

  • Foreign direct investment (FDI) has increased at an exponential rate during the last two decades. It is now a feature of emerging market economies as well. Foreign direct investment and financial development are important factors in an economy's growth. Various studies have examined the impact of foreign direct investment and financial development on economic growth in different countries and areas. However, the findings are currently inconclusive. Using updated data from 1970 to 2020, this study will examine the relationships between FDI, financial development, and economic growth in 30 rising economies.GDP is the dependent variable, while FDI, financial development, trade openness, infrastructure, exchange rate, and GDP growth are the independent factors. To estimate the panel data, we used the most recent econometric models. The study's major findings suggest that FDI and financial development are critical determinants in emerging economies' economic progress. Furthermore, multiple robustness checks supported the study's empirical findings. The results of this study include various practical recommendations for investors, governments, and policymakers, given the increased interest in global economic integration and member states' reliance on FDI as a critical aspect of sustaining prosperity.

  • In VANET, each vehicle can obtain traffic information from other vehicles or infrastructure, and they frequently exchange life-critical safety message. Therefore, it is necessary among vehicles to establish a secure channel for keeping the driver's safe and protecting the channel against several attack challenges. TSVC is a representative scheme which needs low communication and computation to be performed. But, there is a delay when verifying the messages because it is designed based on TESLA. Thus, it is not acceptable to use TSVC for sending the time-critical messages. In this paper, we propose a novel message authentication scheme which reduces a delay for the verification of messages. Therefore, the proposed scheme can be suitable to transmitting time-critical messages. Furthermore, the scheme supports to privacy preservation and can robust against DoS attacks.

Intrahospital Transport of Critically Ill Patients: Critical Care Nurses' Perceptions (중환자실 간호사가 인식한 병원 내 중환자 이송 현황 조사)

  • Purpose : This study aimed to identify the status of intrahospital transport (IHT) of critically ill patients and provide baseline data to form recommendations for safer transport. Methods : Data were collected from 141 intensive care unit (ICU) nurses who attended national conferences between February and August, 2018. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and ANOVA, and post-hoc analysis was conducted with the Scheffé and Games-Howell tests. Results : Of the nurses surveyed, 61.7% answered that their workplace had a transport guideline. In terms of the experience of ICU nurses, 31.2% of respondents answered that they had received training on IHT. This result indicated that the degree of implementation of the guidelines for IHT was generally high, but some, including guidelines on personnel, equipment, and monitoring, were not. Guidelines of IHT were well observed when the institutes had specific guidelines for IHT of critically ill patients with specified transport grades, a scoring system to assess stability of a patient, a checklist and a protocol for action in case of problems, and when healthcare providers were provided with training. Conclusion : These results suggest that organized infrastructure, such as a transport guideline with transport grades, a checklist to improve the implementation of guidelines, and a protocol for coping with a problem, should be provided for safe transport. Additionally, effective education and evaluation to improve the competency of staff participating in the transport of patients will help reduce the occurrence of adverse events in intensive care transport in hospitals and promote patient safety.

Status of the Development and Utilization of Critical Pathways in Medical Institutions in South Korea (국내 의료기관의 표준진료지침 개발 및 운영 현황)

  • Purpose: This study assessed the status of the Development and Utilization of critical pathways (CP) in South Korea. Methods: We surveyed 195 hospitals obtained on the Korean Hospital Association website. Data were collected using structured questionnaires for staff members in charge of CP management personnel in these hospitals. The questionnaire included CP developed by the institutions, the coverage rates and completion rates of CP in the current year, and management indicators related to CP. The questionnaire also included CP support systems and content within the institutions and questions regarding the advantages of CP utilization and obstacles associated with the CP development process. Results: Analysis of the responses from 70 hospitals (35.9% response rate) showed that a total of 1,370 CP sets were developed. The number of CP related to surgery departments was 365 (26.6%), and CP related to surgery and procedure was 1,093 (79.8%), respectively. The CP coverage rate was the most frequently used indicator to monitor the effect of CP (97.1%), followed by the completion rate (90.0%) and the length of stay in hospital (61.4%). CP managers reported that CP were highly useful for communication (3.39±0.493) and accurate information provision (3.39±0.491). The perception that CP violated doctors' autonomy in treatment was relatively low (2.87±0.645). Conclusion: It is necessary to establish an infrastructure in hospitals for CP. CP can facilitate communication and provide accurate information.

Robust Obstacle Detection and Avoidance Algorithm for Infrastructure-Based Vehicle Communication Under Signal Interference (중계기를 통한 다중 차량 간 통신 상황에서 신호 간섭에 강한 장애물 감지 및 회피 알고리즘)

  • In this paper, we will introduce the system that can control multiple vehicles on the road through Single Board Computers and V2I (Vehicle-To-Infrastructure). Also, we will propose the group evasive maneuver decision algorithm, which plays a critical role in deciding whether the vehicles in the system have to conduct evasive maneuvers to avoid obstacles on the road. In order to test this system, we have utilized Wi-Fi and TCP/IP for establishing the communication between multiple vehicles and the relay server, and observed their driving states on the road with obstacles. During the experiments, we have discovered that our original decision algorithm possesses high failure rate when there is frequency interference in ISM (Industrial Scientific Medical) band. In order to reduce this failure rate, we have implemented the data transition detector. This paper will focus on how the use of data transition detector can affect the reliability of the system under the frequency interference of ISM band. If this technology is improved and applied in the field, we will effectively deal with such dangerous situations as multiple collision accidents through vehicle-to-vehicle communication or vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. Furthermore, this can be applied to the autonomous driving technologies. This can be used as the reference data for the development of the similar system.

Comparative analysis of wavelet transform and machine learning approaches for noise reduction in water level data (웨이블릿 변환과 기계 학습 접근법을 이용한 수위 데이터의 노이즈 제거 비교 분석)

  • In the context of the fourth industrial revolution, data-driven decision-making has increasingly become pivotal. However, the integrity of data analysis is compromised if data quality is not adequately ensured, potentially leading to biased interpretations. This is particularly critical for water level data, essential for water resource management, which often encounters quality issues such as missing values, spikes, and noise. This study addresses the challenge of noise-induced data quality deterioration, which complicates trend analysis and may produce anomalous outliers. To mitigate this issue, we propose a noise removal strategy employing Wavelet Transform, a technique renowned for its efficacy in signal processing and noise elimination. The advantage of Wavelet Transform lies in its operational efficiency - it reduces both time and costs as it obviates the need for acquiring the true values of collected data. This study conducted a comparative performance evaluation between our Wavelet Transform-based approach and the Denoising Autoencoder, a prominent machine learning method for noise reduction.. The findings demonstrate that the Coiflets wavelet function outperforms the Denoising Autoencoder across various metrics, including Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), and Mean Squared Error (MSE). The superiority of the Coiflets function suggests that selecting an appropriate wavelet function tailored to the specific application environment can effectively address data quality issues caused by noise. This study underscores the potential of Wavelet Transform as a robust tool for enhancing the quality of water level data, thereby contributing to the reliability of water resource management decisions.

  • Against the backdrop of IMO's stricter environmental regulations due to global warming, Europe's Fit for 55 plan, and other initiatives, the establishment of infrastructure for the supply of environmentally friendly marine fuels and policy analysis are more critical than ever. This study comprehensively analyzes existing research and policies on the supply of environmentally friendly marine fuels, as well as trends in regulations, industry responses, and the current status of infrastructure for the supply of environmentally friendly fuels, to draw insightful conclusions. The results show that the establishment of infrastructure for the supply of environmentally friendly fuels is as important as the introduction of environmentally friendly ships, due to the strengthening of environmental regulations. LNG is a viable option in the short term, but a transition to carbon-free fuels is necessary in the long run. In this regard, a strategic approach is needed to focus support on fuels that are advantageous to produce, considering domestic industrial conditions from a long-term perspective. Therefore, the government should actively promote infrastructure development through measures such as supporting the development and supply of environmentally friendly fuels, improving regulations and providing incentives, attracting private investment, and strengthening international cooperation. This study is expected to serve as a valuable resource for setting policy directions for the transition to an environmentally friendly maritime industry. Future research will include a comparative analysis of the economic viability of environmentally friendly fuels and basic research on the selection of fuels that are advantageous to Korea.

  • TSI(Technical Specification for Interoperability) is the highest technical specification in the Europe Railway and is composed by assessment items and essential requirements included by safety, reliability, availability, health, environment protection and technical compatibility. It is used on the research and development in the next generation railway technical. Currently, TSI procedures have been asked to bid for high speed rail business in Europe and Brazil. Also, all the railway systems such as infrastructure, signaling, electric and rolling stock system corresponding with standard of TSI procedures are exported and imported. Recently, Safety Critical System which has been studied on future railway R&D business in Korea is the state of the art train control system. And it is needed for system assessment of TSI procedures before system test and operation. In this paper, basic research is performed for analyzing TSI procedures suitable for the state of the art train control system in Korean railway.

An Exploratory Study of Perceived Benefits and Risks for QR Code based Virtual Fashion Stores (QR코드 기반 가상패션점포의 지각된 혜택과 위험요소에 대한 탐색적 연구)

  • This study explores critical and success factor of benefits and risks for predicting the acceptance of QR code virtual fashion stores. As an exploratory approach, this study conducted focus group interviews(FGI) with 21 panels who had experience with selected QR virtual stores (e.g., Home plus, 11th Street, Pin & Fit). Content analysis was used to generate 184 excerpts and classify into benefits and risks related to QR code virtual stores. With respect to benefits, content analysis identified four factors: Affective appeal, perceived usefulness, ubiquity, and brand promotion. Also, contents regarding perceived risks were classified into four factors: Complexity, lack of information, lack of technology infrastructure, and perceived cost. A managerial implication was discussed for predicting consumer technology acceptance of a QR code virtual store in the fashion retailing market.
