Lateral-torsional buckling of functionally graded tapered I-beams considering lateral bracing

  • In this paper, the lateral-torsional buckling of axially-transversally functionally graded tapered beam is investigated. The structure cross-section is assumed to be symmetric I-section, and it is continuously laterally supported by torsional springs through the length. In addition, the height of cross-section varies linearly throughout the length of structure. The proposed formulation is obtained for the case that the elastic and shear modulus change as a power function along the beam length and section height. This structure carries two concentrated moments at the ends. In this study, the lateral displacement and twisting angle relation of the beam are defined by sinusoidal series. After establishing the eigenvalue equation of unknown constants, the beam critical bending moment is found. To validate the accuracy and correctness of results, several numerical examples are solved.

  • Current lead is one of the first proposed devices for the application of High Temperature-Superconductor(HTSC). The current lead provides high current for electrical machine using superconductor from room temperature. Its characteristics that is zero resistance and low heat transfer rate under critical temperature lead to research for the replacement of existing current lead with HTSC. In this paper, we investigated the temperature distributions of stacking type and rod type current lead with each cross-section area and length using Nastran program and compared each temperature distribution. It is obtained from this paper that stacking type current lead has flat temperature gradient and than rod type one and more stable operation as current lead is closely related with its cross-section area and length.

Distortional buckling formulae for cold-formed steel rack-section members

  • The paper derives, validates and illustrates the application of GBT-based formulae to estimate distortional critical lengths and bifurcation stress resultants in cold-formed steel rack-section columns, beams and beam-columns with arbitrarily inclined mid-stiffeners and four support conditions. After a brief review of the Generalised Beam Theory (GBT) basics, the main concepts and procedures employed to obtain the formulae are addressed. Then, the GBT-based estimates are compared with exact results and, when possible, also with values yielded by formulae due to Lau and Hancock, Hancock and Teng et al. A few remarks on novel aspects of the rack-section beam-column distortional buckling behaviour, unveiled by the GBT-based approach, are also included.

  • This paper deals the shaking table tests with 1/100 scaled model followed by Scott & Iai(1989)'s similitude law for OO dam main desging section to understand nonlinear behavior characteristics of concrete dam body by earthquake wave. As earthquake wave, Hachinohe and Elcentro waves were used and acceleration and displacements are measured to analyze behaviors of dam body. For ground maximum acceleration range ($0.3^{\sim}0.9g$), the results showed linear behavior regardless of ground maximum acceleration and secured safety of structure. To analyze the behavior of dam after tension cracking, 3cm-notch was placed at the critical section of over-flowing section. As results of applying Hachinohe wave(0.8g), Even though tension cracks were formed at over-flowing section by Hachinohe wave(0.8g), it showed that the dam is stable for supporting upper stream part of water tank of dam.

  • A theoretical model was developed to predict the shear strength of slender reinforced concrete beams. The shear force applied to a cross-section of the beam was assumed to be resisted primarily by the compressive zone of intact concrete rather than by the tensile zone. The shear capacity of the cross section was defined based on the material failure criteria of concrete: failure controlled by compression and failure controlled by tension. In the evaluation of the shear capacity, interaction with the normal stresses developed by the flexural moment in the cross section was considered. In the proposed strength model, the shear strength of the beam and the location of the critical section were determined at the intersection between the shear capacity and shear demand curves. The proposed strength model was verified by the comparisons to prior experimental results.

  • For structural engineers, design of pile cap causes difficulties since design of this member is not specifically addressed by codes. In general, pile cap is considered as deep beam and designed for shear and moment at specified critical section. This is called as traditional section method. However, many international design codes suggest the application of strut tie method for better design of this member. In this paper, a brief application of strut tie method to the design check of pile cap structure designed by section method is presented. Unlike well known pile cap with single column, the example pile cap has two columns. In order to find out proper load path under various load condition, three dimensional finite element method was carried out. The result indicates that provided reinforcement by traditional section method has sufficient capacity to meet the design requirements.

  • In this research, the aeroelastic instability of a tail section manufactured from aluminum isotropic material with different shell thickness investigated. For this purpose, the two degrees of freedom flutter analytical approach are used, which is accompanied with simulation by finite element analysis. Using finite element analysis, the geometry parameters such as the center of mass, the aerodynamic center and the shear center are determined. Also, by simulation of finite element method, the bending and torsional stiffnesses for various thickness of the airfoil section are determined. Furthermore, using Lagrange's methods the equations of motion are derived and modal frequency and critical torsional/bending modes are discussed. The results show that with increasing the thickness of the isotropic airfoil section, the flutter and divergence speeds increased. Compared of the obtained results with other research, indicates a good agreement and reliability of this method.

  • For large scale applications of high temperature superconductor (HTS) such as transmission cables, motors and generators, long length of flexible HTS conductor is required. Currently, Bi-2223 HTS tape is capable of being fabricated in longer than 100 m length by industrial processes. In this study, we fabricated 100 m 19 filamentary Bi-2223 ($Bi_{1.8}Pb_{0.4}Sr_2Ca_2O_{10+x}$) HTS tape by PIT (Power in Tube) process. Critical current(IC) of this long length tape was measured 18.5 A at 77K, self field. Critical current of 100 m length tape was mainly resulted from the increase of inhomogeneity in oxide from the increase of inhomogeneity in oxide layer. Engineering critical current (Je=Ic/total tape cross-section area) that is important factor for practical applications and fabrication cost was measured 2.2 kA/cm2.

A Study on the Early Fracture Characteristics of Ceramic Tool for Carbon Tool Steel (탄소공구량에 대한 세라믹공구의 초기파손 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Early fracture and cutting force of ceramic tool for hardened STC3 steel was investigated in this study. It was found that early fracture of ceramic tool was mostly occurred before normal wear was progressed beyond a critical cutting speed and normal wear was performed under the critical cutting speed. The relationships among critical cutting speed, which was a cause of early fracture, suggested cutting cross section, that is, maximum thickness of cut and width of cut, and cutting force were examined. The following conclusions were obtained: (1)Critical cutting speed showed a high value in the case of small maximum thickness of cut and large nose radius, but was not influenced by width of cut, (2)Principal, feed and radial force, respectively, showed the proportional value to constant cutting area, width of cut and maximum thickness of cut orderly, (3)Occurrence of early fracture was dependent upon radial force.
