The Study for the Sequestration of $Ca^{2+}$ by the Micelle Colloid of Nonionic Sunactants (비이온성 계면활성제의 미셀 콜로이드에 의한 $Ca^{2+}$의 은폐에 대한 연구)

  • The effects of $Ca_{2+}$ ion on the formation of micelle colloid of nonionic surfactants, nonylphenol-(ethylene oxide)n [NP-(EO)n: n= 11, 40, 100) were investigated by the iodine solubilization method. The characteristics of spectra depended on the concentration of $Ca_{2+}$ ion and the number of EO unit. Above CMC(critical micelle concentration), the intensity of the CT (charge transfer) band by the addition of $Ca_{2+}$ ion for the NP-(EO)11 and NP-(EO)40 increased and when decreased and for the NP-(EO)In continuously increased. The increase in the intensity of CT band were attributed to the compactness of micelle in the presence of $Ca_{2+}$ ion. These phenomena may be explained by the fact that the linear ethylene oxide (EO) chain, relatively free to assume various configuration in aqueous solution, could form a pseudo-crown ether structures capable of forming complexes with $Ca_{2+}$ ion.

  • micellar solution which is comprised of surfactant monomers, monodisperse micelles, and solvent(water) is studied from a statistical-mechanical point of view. The model examined in this article is for the ideal mixture of monomers, micelles, and solvent with the dielectric constant identical to that of solvent, which is an assumption common to continuum models. The model also reflects interactions between monomer and solvent molecule, and also between micelle and solvent molecule. The statistical-mechanical model under consideration yields ln $X_{CMC}=A+BT+C/T+D{\ln}T$ with $X_{CMC}$ being critical mcielle concentration (in mole fraction), being temperature, and A, B, C, D being constants which depend on the properties of the surfactant molecules. The statistical-mechanical model discussed in this article provides a theoretical basis on the thermal dependence of critical micelle concentration

  • The synthesis of poly(N,N-dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)) copolymer has been carried out and the block copolymer was characterized by FT-IR, DSC, and $^1$H-NMR. The formation of polymeric nanoaggregation was observed in the solution mixture of poly(DMAEMA) -block-PEG copolymer and poly (ethyl acrylamide) (EAAm) due to the intermolecular interaction via hydrogen bond between DMAEMA and poly(EAAm). The formation of polymeric nanoaggregation was observed above critical micelle concentration (CMC).

  • The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of sodium deoxycholate (NaDC) and the effects of amides on the micellization processes have been studied by fluorometric technique using pyrene as a probe. The addition of amides as cosolvent destabilized the NaDC micelle and increased the CMC. The order of effectiveness for the perturbation of NaDC micelle was N-methylacetamide ${\ge}$ DMF > acetamide > formamide, which is the order of hydrophobicity of the amines. This indicated that the effect of amides on the micellization processes of NaDC arises from diminution of the hydrophobic effect. The electrostatic repulsion between ionic head groups in the NaDC micelle appeared to be much less than that in aliphatic ionic micelle. This was also revealed in the weaker dependence of the CMC on ionic strength. The premicellar association of NaDC was not significantly involved in the micellization processes of the bile salt.

A Phenomenological Study on Micellization and Solubilization (Micelle 형성에 관한 현상학적 고찰)

  • When the sufactants are dissolved in water, they associate to form micelles and solubilize oil inside the micelle to form swollen micelles. Although spherical aggregates like micelles and swollen micelles occupy the same regions in the phase diagram of water-oil-surfactant systems, they are treated in different viewpoint for the formation of such aggregates. Hence a unified thermodynamic formalism for the formation of such structure is presented in this study. In all cases, the to ideal solution theory is applied for dilute system and the energy of formation is expressed as the sum of hydrophobic interaction energy and surface energy due to surfactant film. From the model, critical micelle concentration (CMC), average aggregation number, and solubilization ratio are predicted and compared with the known experimental observation.

  • Cyclic voltammetric method is used to survey microscopic environments which take place at the surfactant-modified carbon electrode when the hydrophobic and hydrophilic environments of $Ru(ph){_3}^{2+}$(tris 1,10-phenanthroline ruthenium(II) chloride) is created by the addition of anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS). Critical micelle concentration(CMC) of SDS in $Ru(ph){_3}^{2+}$ measured by cyclic voltammetry(CV) is in aggrement with that by surface tensiometry. Influence of the concentration of supporting electrolyte at surfactant-modified carbon electrode is investigated.

  • To explore the potential of shell crosslinked micelle (SCM) as a drug carrier, the drug release behavior of poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone)-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PCL-b-PAA) SCMs was investigated. PCL-b-PAA was synthesized by ring opening polymerization of $\varepsilon$-caprolactone and atom transfer radical polymerization of tert-butyl acrylate, followed by selective hydrolysis of tert-butyl ester groups to acrylic acid groups. The resulting amphiphilic polymer was used to prepare SCMs by crosslinking of PAA corona via amidation chemistry. The drug release behavior of the SCMs was studied, using pyrene as a model drug, and was compared with that of non-crosslinked micelles, especially below the critical micelle concentration (CMC). When the shell layers were crosslinked, the drug release behavior of the SCMs was successfully modulated at a controlled rate compared with that of the non-crosslinked micelles, which showed a burst release of drug within a short time.

  • A new quaternary ammonium compound, hydrolyzed ginseng-saponin quaternary (HGSQ), from Korean ginseng saponin and 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride has been developed as a conditioning agent in cosmetics. This structure has a hydrophobic group from the aglycone of ginseng saponin which is biologically active and considered to be the most important component of the Korean ginseng. Its properties : surface tension, critical micelle concentration (CMC), eye irritation, sorption onto hair, force reduction(%) and moisture retention effect were studied. Its cationic character allows the molecule to be more substantive than ginseng saponin. HGSQ had good physical properties and was safe. enough as a cosmetic raw material. Also half-head tests of HGSQ-containing shampoo were carried out to compare the conditioning effects in shampoos. HGSQ was an excellent conditioning agent in shampoo..
