This study investigates the whirling stability of a rotating shaft-disk system under parametric excitation using periodically varying torque. The equations of motion were derived using a lumped-mass model, and the Floquet method was employed to find the effects of torque fluctuation, internal and external damping, and rotational speed on whirling stability. Results indicated that the effect of torque fluctuation was considerable on the instability around resonance, but minimal on supercritical instability. Stability diagrams were sensitive to the parametric excitation frequency; critical torque decreased upon increasing excitation frequency, with faster response convergence or divergence. In addition, internal and external damping had a considerable effect on unstable regions, and reduced the effects of the parametric excitation frequency on critical torque and speed. Results obtained from the Floquet approach were in good agreement with those obtained by numerical integration, except for some cases with Floquet multipliers very close to unity.
The damping characteristics of a cylindrical structure containing oil and bearing balls is investigated for external bending forces. The experimental data obtained through the use of bearing balls with viscous oil in a column is given and analyzed. The viscous action of the oil and inertia effects of the balls on the inside of column create a drag force. The drag force dampens the vibration of the column. This study aims to search for an optimum combination of oil and balls which would produce maximum damping. Machining oils of various viscosities along with ball bearings of various sizes place inside cantilevered aluminium tubes of various diameters to create a rig on which the damping properties of the oil and balls can be studied. The contileved tubes are studied in both horizontal and vertical positions in order to gauge the effect of gravity on the system. The actions of the ball in the column and damping characteristics are investigated according to the dimensionless terms. The Buckingham theorem is used to reduce the variables and to predict the damping of an oil ball column. Though the damping ratio remains fairly constant in the horizontal position of column, the damping ratio begins to increase as the ratio of the number of balls and column length rise above 0.28 in the vertical position of oil ball column. The ratio of the ball diameter to column diameter influences the damping ratio with an optimum diameter ratio. Slenderness ratio and gravity effects on the damping ratio ane investigated.

With the results of calculation for natural frequencies the reponses of forced coupled vibration of propulsion shafting system were investigated by the modal analysis method. For the forced vibration response analysis, the axial exciting forces, the axial damper/detuner, propeller exciting forces and damping coefficients were extensively considered. As the conclusion of this study, some items are cleared as follows.-The torsional vibration amplitudes are not influenced by the radial excitation forces of the crank shaft. -The axial vibration amplitudes are influenced by the tangential exciting forces as well as the radial exciting forces of the crank shaft. The increase of the amplitudes is observed in the speed range at the neighbourhood of any torsional critical speed. 1The closer the torsional and axial critical speed. the larger coupling effect becomes. -The axial exciting force of propeller is relatively strong comparing with axial exciting forces of cylinder gas pressure and oscillating inertia of reciprocating mechanism. Therefore, the following conclusions are obtained. -Torsional vibration calculation with the classical one dimensional model is still valid. -The influence of torsional excitation at each crank upon the axial vibration is improtant. especially in the neighbourhood of a torsional critical speed. That means that the calculation of axial vibration with the classical one dimensional model is inaccurate in most of cases.

The purpose of superconducting magnetic bearing flywheel energy storage system(SMB-FESS) is to store unused nighttime electricity as kinetic energy and convert it to electricity during daytime. The SMB-FESS is proposed as an efficient energy storage system because there is no mechanical problems, such as friction and wear The flywheel over SMB is rotated at a high speed, 50,000rpm. The major source of energy loss in the SMB-FESS is vibration of flywheel. Therefore, the vibration characteristics of SMB-FESS should be identified. In this study, the axial/radial stiffness and damping coefficient of SMB are measured by a vibration test. Natural frequencies and natural modes of flywheel and magnet are analyzed by a finite element method. The modal analysis of system is performed using the modal parameters of each component and the measured stiffness/damping coefficient. So, natural at frequencies and mode shapes of the joined system can be obtained. According to critical speed analysis, the system has two rigid conical modes in the low speed range. Nevertheless, the system has not been affected by the critical speed in the main operating range.

An increase of amplitude is observed for the speed range in the neighbourhood of any torsional critical speed. - The coupling effect becomes larger if torsional and axial critical speed are closer together. - The axial exciting force of propeller is relatively strong, comparing with those of axial forces of cylinder gas pressure and oscillating inertia of reciprocating mechanism. Therefore, as a resume one can say, that- Torsional vibration calculation with the classical one dimension model is still valid. - The influence of torsional excitation at each crank upon the axial vibration is impotent, especially in the neighbourhood of a torsional critical speed. That means that the calculation of axial vibration with the classical one dimension model is insufficient in most of cases. - The torsional exciting torque of propeller can be neglected in most of cases. But, the axial exciting forces of propeller can not be neglected for calculating axial vibration of propulsion shafting.

In this paper the linearzed stiffness and damping coefficients of tilting pad thrust bearing are calculated by the perturbation method. The coefficients are obtained for a wide range of pivot positions. The effects of exciting frequency and pad mass on stiffness and damping coefficients are investigated. Critical frequencies due to the tilting motions of the pad are presented and are shown to be strongly influenced by the pivot position and pad mass.

A soil-structure interaction formulation is used here which is based on consideration of the dynamics of the structure with a free, rather than a fixed, base. This approach is shown to give a quite simple procedure for coupling the dynamic characteristics of the structure to those of the foundation and soil in order to obtain a matrix formulation for the complete system. In fixed-base studies it is common to presume that each natural mode of the structure has a given fraction of critical damping, and since the interaction formulation uses a free-base model, it seems natural for this situation to assign the equal modal damping values to free-base modes. It is shown, though, that this gives a structural model which is significantly different than the one having equal modal damping in the fixed-base modes. In particular, it is found that the damping matrix resulting in equal modal damping values for free-based modes will give a very significantly smaller damping value for the fundamental distortional mode of the fixed-base structure. Ignoring this fact could lead one to attribute dynamic effects to interaction which are actually due to the choice of damping.
The paper deals with the vibration and dynamic stability of cantilevered pipes conveying fluid on elastic foundations. The relationship between the eigenvalue branches and corresponding unstable modes associated with the flutter of the pipe is thoroughly investigated. Governing equations of motion are derived from the extended Hamilton's principle, and a numerical scheme using finite element methods is applied to obtain the discretized equations. The critical flow velocity and stability maps of the pipe are obtained for various elastic foundation parameters, mass ratios of the pipe, and structural damping coefficients. Especially critical mass ratios, at which the transference of the eigenvalue branches related to flutter takes place, are precisely determined. Finally, the flutter configuration of the pipe at the critical flow velocities is drawn graphically at every twelfth period to define the order of the quasi-mode of flutter configuration.
Wind tunnel tests and analyses of the response of the concrete pylon for the Seo Han Grand Bridge were conducted using aeroelastic model technique. A 1/250 scale aeroelastic model was used to measure the responses of the pylon at the several critical locations and to find any possible vibrational behavior. In order to confirm the model design and fabrication, natural frequencies and mode shapes measured from the model were compared with those from the calculation. Tests were conducted under the various angles ranging from $0^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ to find the critical angle of the wind. In order to evaluate the sensitivity of the response to changes in structural damping, a series of tests were conducted with two different values of structural damping such as 0.2% and 1.0% of critical. Additional tests were also conducted considering construction sequence.
