Anisotropic consolidation, shear, a transportational component during or after deposition each may produce anisotropic fabrics, which result in the anisotropic properties of soils. Nevertheless, the isotropically consolidated compression triaxial tests are commonly used in practice to determine the strength of the anisotropically consolidated soils because of their practicality and simplicity. In this paper the effects of anisotropic consolidation on the strength properties of soils are discussed. For the sandy soils consolidated under a constant vertical consolidation pressure, the deformation modulus decreases with decreasing consolidation pressure ratio($\sigma$$\sub$3c/'/$\sigma$ sub 1c/'), but the liquefaction resistance increases. For the saturated cohesive soils, both the undrained shear strength and undrained creep strength decrese with decreasing the consolidation pressure ratio. When the in-situ strength properties of the anisotropically and normally consolidated soils are determined by the isotropically consolidated tests, the undrained shear strength and creep strength of saturated cohesive soils as well as the deformation modulus of sandy soils are measured to be higher than the rear in-situ values. This, therefore, could lead to a dangerous judgement in stability analysis
Nature of magnetic creep phenomena in low coercive force films(Ni 80%-Fe 20%) in form of narrow channels imbedded in high coercive force films is studied in this work. Aluminium is evaporated on the hot glass substrate and eched free in the shape of narrow channels by photoetoetching method. then, Permalloy(Ni 80%, Fe 20%) is deposited on these Aluminium substrate under the uniform field of 30(Oe) to introduce anisotropy. Permalloy film on Al has a high coercive force and one on the substrate devoid of Al has how coercive force. Magnetic revers domain which is introduced at the end of channel grows under the a.c field in hard axis direction, in spite of very weak d.c field in easy axis direction. This creeping is investigated as a function of external fields and channel widths. Permalloy film thickness is 500.angs.-900.angs. and channel widths are 40, 51, 65, 81, 115.mu. respectively. Creeping increases as external field increases while it decreases with channel width decrease. Creep velocity in channels depends on the a.c field along hard axis, d.c field along easy axis and channel widths and its range is 1-10cm/sec in this experiment. From study of dependence of creep velocity on channel width, it can be concluded that creep velocity is expressed in form of v=v$_{0}$ exp .alpha.(H-H$_{0}$) where .alpha. is a function of a.c field along hard axis and H is driving d.c field along easy axis, H$_{0}$ is not a coercive force of film as usuall expected but the d.c threshold field along easy axis which is a function of channel width. This characteristic is also confirmed by the study of dependence of creep velocity upon easy axis field strength. Value of .alpha. obtained is 1.3-2.3cm/sec We depending upon film charactor, hard axis field strength and frequency.uency.

In order to ultrasonically evaluate creep cavities pure copper samples were subjected to creep test and their microstructures were examined. Ultrasonic velocities. frequency-dependent magnitude spectra and attenuations were measured on a series of copper samples obtained from the different stages of creep test. Velocities measured in three directions with respect to the loading axis decreased and their anisotropy increased as a function of the creep-induced porosity. The anisotropic behavior could be attributed to the progressive change of pore shape and preferred orientation as the creep advanced. The 2% porosity by volume decreased the longitudinal and shear wave velocities by 11% and 4%, respectively. Furthermore, both velocities decreased nonlinearly with the porosity. As the creep damage developed, the magnitude spectra lost high frequency components and their central frequencies shifted to lower values. The attenuation showed almost linear behavior in the frequency range used. Normalized velocity, central frequency shift and attenuation slope were selected as nondestructive evaluation parameters. These results were presented and showed good relations with the porosity content.
To estimate nondestructively strength performances of laminated woods, 3-ply parallel- and cross-laminated wood specimens exposed under atmosphere conditions after bending creep test were prepared for this study. The effects of density of species, arrangement of laminae and lamination types on dynamic MOE obtained by flexural vibration were investigated, and regression analyses were conducted in order to estimate static bending strength and bending creep performances. Dynamic MOE of parallel-laminated woods showed 1.0~1.2 times higher values than static bending MOE, and those of cross-laminated woods showed 1.0~1.4 times higher values than static bending MOE. The degree of anisotropy of dynamic MOE perpendicular to the grain of face laminae versus that parallel to the grain of face laminae was markedly decreased by cross-laminating. There were strong correlations between dynamic MOE by flexural vibration and static bending MOE (correlation coefficient r = 0.919~0.972) or bending MOR (correlation coefficient r = 0.811~0.947) of 3-ply laminated woods, and the correlation coefficient were higher in parallel-laminated woods than in cross-laminated woods. It indicated that static bending strength performances were able to be estimated from dynamic MOE by flexural vibration. Also, close correlations between the reciprocal of dynamic MOE by flexural vibration and initial compliance at 0.008 h of 3-ply laminated woods were found (correlation coefficient r = 0.873~0.991). However, the correlation coefficient between the reciprocal of dynamic MOE and creep compliance at 168 h of 3-ply laminated woods was considerably lower than those between dynamic MOE and initial compliance, and it was hard to estimate creep compliance with a high accuracy from dynamic MOE due to the variation of creep deformation.
For the Rouse chain composed of infinite number of beads (continuous limit), conformational changes during the creep and creep recovery processes was recently analyzed to reveal the interplay among all Rouse eigenmodes under the constant stress condition (Watanabe and Inoue, Rheol. Acta, 2004). For completeness of the analysis of the Rouse model, this paper analyzes the conformational changes of the discrete Rouse chain having a finite number of beads (N = 3 and 4). The analysis demonstrates that the chain of finite N exhibits the affine deformation on imposition/removal of the stress and this deformation gives the instantaneous component of the recoverable compliance, $J_{R}$(0) = 1/(N-l)v $k_{B}$T with v and $k_{B}$ being the chain number density and Boltzmann constant, respectively. (This component vanishes for N\longrightarrow$\infty$.) For N = 2, it is known that the chain has only one internal eigenmode so that the affinely deformed conformation at the onset of the creep process does not change with time t and $J_{R}$(t) coincides with $J_{R}$(0) at any t (no transient increase of $J_{R}$(t)). However, for N$\geq$3, the chain has N-l eigenmodes (N-l$\geq$2), and this coincidence vanishes. For this case, the chain conformation changes with t to the non-affine conformation under steady flow, and this change is governed by the interplay of the Rouse eigenmodes (under the constant stress condition). This conformational change gives the non-instantaneous increase of $J_{R}$(t) with t, as also noted in the continuous limit (N\longrightarrow$\infty$).X>).TEX>).X>).

In this study, to study an effective use and improve strength performances of woods and wood-based materials, three-ply hybrid laminated woods which are composed of spruce in the face and three kinds of wood-based boards (MDF, PB, OSB) in the core were manufactured, and the effect of constitution elements used for the core laminae on bending creep performances was investigated. The shape of creep curves showed exponential function plots which the upper right side was increased, and differed among the kinds of wood-based boards used for the core laminae of hybrid laminated wood. The creep deformation perpendicular to the grain of faces of hybrid laminated woods was in order $C_{\perp}$(P) > $C_{\perp}$(M) > $C_{\perp}$(O) with PB, MDF and OSB in the core, respectively. It was found that the creep deformation arranged with OSB in the core had 2 times smaller than those arranged with MDF and PB in the core. By hybrid laminating, the creep deformation of spruce perpendicular to the grain was markedly decreased. On the other hand, the creep deformation parallel to the grain of the faces ($C_{\parallel}$ type) of hybrid laminated woods was in order $C_{\parallel}$(P) > $C_{\parallel}$(O) > $C_{\parallel}$(M) with PB, OSB and MDF in the core. The ratios among three hybrid laminated woods were considerably decreased, especially the difference between $C_{\parallel}$(P) and $C_{\parallel}$(O) hybrid laminated woods arranged with PB and OSB in the core was very small. These values showed 0.108~0.464 times smaller than creep deformation of three wood-based boards and it was found that creep deformation of three wood-based boards was considerably decreased by hybrid laminating. Creep anisotropy of hybrid laminated woods was greater in creep deformation than in initial deformation, whereas it was found that the values was much smaller than that of spruce parallel laminated woods.
The indigenous nuclear power program of India is based mainly on a series of Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs). A burst correlation for Indian PHWR fuel claddings has been developed and empirical burst parameters are determined. The burst correlation is developed from data available in literature for single-rod transient burst tests performed on Indian PHWR claddings in inert environment. The heating rate and internal overpressure were in the range of 7 K/s-73 K/s and 3 bar-80 bar, respectively, during the burst tests. A burst criterion for inert environment, which assumes that deformation is controlled by steady state creep, has been developed using the empirical burst parameters. The burst criterion has been validated with experimental data reported in literature and the prediction of burst parameters is in a fairly good agreement with the experimental data. The burst criterion model reveals that increasing the heating rate increases the burst temperature. However, at higher heating rates, burst strain is decreased considerably and an early rupture of the claddings without undergoing considerable ballooning is observed. It is also found that the degree of anisotropy has significant influence on the burst temperature and burst strain. With increasing degree of anisotropy, the burst temperature for claddings increases but there is a decrease in the burst strain. The effect of anisotropy in the ${\alpha}$-phase is carried over to ${\alpha}+{\beta}$-phase and its effect on the burst strain in the ${\alpha}+{\beta}$-phase too can be observed.

We examined the microfabrics of omphacite and garnet in foliated eclogite to determine the influence of the layered structure on seismic observations in subduction zone. The analyzed eclogite, from the Lanterman Range, northern Victoria Land, Antarctica, is characterized by layering in which the modal abundances of garnet and omphacite vary. For garnet, the low aspect ratios, similar angular distribution of long axes relative to the foliation in both layers, uniform grain size distribution, near-random crystallographic preferred orientations (CPOs), and misorientation angle distributions are indicative of passive behavior during deformation. In contrast, omphacite shows relatively high aspect ratios, a low angle between the long axes of crystals and the foliation, a wide grain-size distribution, and distinctive CPOs, suggesting dislocation creep as the main deformation mechanism. The results of fabric analyses are consistent with strain localization into omphacite or omphacite-rich layers rather than garnet or garnet-rich layers. The single-crystal seismic anisotropy of garnet is very weak ($AV_P=0.2%$, $AV_S=0.5-0.6%$), whereas that of omphacite is much stronger ($AV_P=3.7-5.9%$ and $AV_S=2.9-3.8%$). Seismic anisotropy of the omphacite-rich layers shows an increase of 329% for $AV_P$ and 146% for $AV_S$ relative to the garnet-rich layers. Our results demonstrate the importance of the layered structure in strain localization and in the development of the seismic anisotropies of subducting oceanic crust.
A new hybrid oedometer cell is designed and manufactured to investigate a behavior of soft soils by using elastic and electromagnetic waves during consolidation test. Bender elements, which generate and detect shear waves, are placed in the top cap and the bottom plate and mounted on the oedometer wall. Double wedge type electrical resistance probe, which measures local void ratio change, is positioned onto the top cap of the oedometer cell. The bender elements and the electrical resistance probe are anchored into a nylon set screw with epoxy resin. The nylon set screw with epoxy resin minimizes directly transmited elastic waves through the oedometer cell due to impedence mismatch and allows for easy replacement of defected bender elements and electrical resistance probe. Primary consolidation time can be estimated from the slope of electrical resistance versus log time curve and the evolution of shear wave velocity. The shear wave velocity can be used to assess inherent anisotropy when disturbance effects are minimized because particle alignment affects the shear wave velocity. The void ratios evaluated by the electrical resistance probe are similar to those by the settlement during consolidation. This study suggests that the shear wave velocity and the electrical resistance can provide complementary imformations to understand consolidation characteristics such as primary consolidation, anisotropy, and void ratio.
