  • The sliding wear characteristics of the crane sheave were investigated using a pin on disk rig tester. The experiment was conducted using a high carbon steel wire that was upper material, also carbon steel castings that was disk material. There are various operating conditions in this work. At the room temperature, we carried out the wear test under a grease lubrication and dry condition. The results of wear test showed that an annealed-casted have lower, also the wear curves are linearly increased with increasing of sliding distance. For the specific wear rate of annealed-casted, the wear resistance was increased with decreasing diameter of wire. The wear of a wire and a disk have a different mechanism, the one is the abrasive wear due to fatigue wear under lubrication, another is the adhesion wear under dry condition.

  • A self-climbing crane (SCC) system is under development for the installation and maintenance of wind turbines. It can move vertically along the wind turbine tower by itself. One of the key components of the SCC system is the clamping pad to maintain a safe position on the wind turbine tower. The SCC system can maintain its position on the tower from the frictional force generated between the surfaces of the clamping pads and the tower. If the frictional force provided by the clamping pads are insufficient, the SCC system cannot stay in the vertical position on the tower. Therefore, the development of clamping pads with sufficient frictional force is very important for the SCC system. At the same time, the operation of the SCC system should not damage the paint coating of the wind turbine tower. In order to verify that the frictional force is sufficient and that frictional and compressive forces do not cause damage to the paint, a number of combined compression and shear loading tests were conducted using a test device prepared for this study. The details regarding the test specimens, test procedure, and test results are summarized in this paper.

  • wet-type multiple disk brakes are very important parts of turning decelerator for deck crane, because they are advanced in durability and braking power, and can be designed compactly. Thus, we designed and made wet-type multiple disk brakes of turning decelerator for deck crane to be localization of these imported all. In this study, wet multiple disk brakes were made a comparative test with the 2 types materials of friction disk by the SAE No.2 dynamometer. The friction characteristics were measured and analyzed to decide a suitable material as wear depth of friction disk and dynamic and static friction coefficient.

  • Crane operation for transporting heavy loads inherently causes swinging motion at the loads due to crane's acceleration or deceleration. This motion not only lowers the handling safety but also slows down the handling process. To complement such a problem, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute(KAERI) has designed several anti-swing controllers using open loop and closed loop approaches. They are namely a pre-programmed feedback controller and a fuzzy controller. These controllers are implemented on a 1-ton crane system at KAERI and their control performances are compared. Test operations show that the new controllers are superior to that of conventional cranes in terms of robustness to the disturbances and adaptation capability to the change of rope length.

  • This paper is a study on the fatigue analysis using BS5400 Part10(1980), code of practice for fatigue for a double link type level luffing jib crane which has been operated since the crane was built in 1985 at a domestic pier. South Korea. In addition, on the basis of the design lift due to fatigue analysis and the number of cracks detected from the nondestructive test the structural reliability and the residual life of the crane is predicted by evaluating the expected development of detectable fatigue oracle during the next five to ten years using Paris's Law for predicting fatigue crack growth and Gaussian probability density function to be reasonable for stress ranges below the mean values determined by laboratory tests. The statistical data used for the analysis of the structural reliability and life expectancy is given in the above referred code.

  • The purpose of this study if to prevent dangerous accident of the overthrow of the tower crane in summer's hurricane. We develop the SMS in order to give automatic alarm system to operator within the dangerous range and to give a information of the exactly slope in the real time. The slope value of the tower crane is compose of direction, pitch by the front and rear, roll by the right and left and synthesis by the its pitch and roll. Especially, the synthesis eliminate the effect of the wall tie or wire bracing. So, this value should correctly indicate the actual slope. In this study, more applying field test should be applied with the SMS. In the future, a more measurement device can be applied to, and be able to feed more alarm criteria for the review of the risk in the field.

  • In this paper we have developed a Power Line Proximity Detecting device for Mobile Crane by using a Derivation Electric-Potential Detection method. A mobile crane worker can be easily exposed to a dangerous electrical shock and the electrocution while they are working at near the high-voltage electrical lines. The derivation electric-potential of the power lines have been simulated in our experiment, Also, microprocessor-based detecting device and transmitter/receiver modules are introduced to show a solution for the dangerous mobile crane working environment. As a result, It has been shown a good functional field test.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate vulnerable parts of tower crane structures by analyzing extensive non-destructive test data. Approximately ten percent of domestically registered tower cranes were inspected by using magnetic particle inspection. The testing was carried out as advised in KS B 0213. The non-destructive results was analyzed with respect to jib types, age and crane size. As a result, the number of crack occurrences were the largest in mast parts, followed by main jib part. Moreover, it was found that turntables were important parts deserved to be noticed at the perspective of safe maintenance.

  • This article describes the dynamic behaviors of a rubber tired gantry crane(RTGC) under typical load conditions which are used in the design of gantry cranes. In order to investigate the dynamic characteristics of an RTGC, we developed a finite element crane model for its huge structure. The finite element model was validated with the modal test results, e.g., natural frequencies and normal modes. And other components of RTGC were converted into detailed 3D CAD models and finally transformed to rigid body models in a dynamic simulation program ADAMS. The load conditions considered in this paper were a normal operating condition(OP1) and container hanging condition with no external loads. As a result, we could find there was large influence of crane's vibration owing to its structural stiffness and deformation. And the vibration of crane could made the movements of RTGC, which occurs crash or malfunction of crane works.
