The present study simplified the moment-curvature relationship to straightforwardly determine the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) columns. For the idealized column section, moments and neutral axis depths at different stages(first flexural crack, yielding of tensile reinforcing bar, maximum strength, and 80% of the maximum strength at the descending branch) were derived on the basis of the equilibrium condition of forces and compatibility condition. Concrete strains at the extreme compression fiber beyond the maximum strength were determined using the stress-strain relationship of confined concrete, proposed by Kim et al. The lateral load-displacement curves converted from the simplified moment-curvature relationship of columns are well consistent with test results obtained from column specimens under various parameters. The moments and the corresponding neutral axis depth at different stages were formulated as a function of longitudinal reinforcement and transverse reinforcement indices and/or applied axial load index. Overall, curvature ductility of columns was significantly affected by the axial load level as well as concrete compressive strength and the amount of longitudinal and transverse reinforcing bars.
A novel precast concrete-encased steel composite beam, which can be abbreviated as PCES beam, is introduced in this paper. In order to investigate the shear behavior of this PCES beam, a test of eight full-scale PCES beam specimens was carried out, in which the specimens were subjected to positive bending moment or negative bending moment, respectively. The factors which affected the shear behavior, such as the shear span-to-depth aspect ratio and the existence of concrete flange, were taken into account. During the test, the load-deflection curves of the test specimens were recorded, while the crack propagation patterns together with the failure patterns were observed as well. From the test results, it could be concluded that the tested PCES beams could all exhibit ductile shear behavior, and the innovative shear connectors between the precast concrete and cast-in-place concrete, namely the precast concrete transverse diaphragms, were verified to be effective. Then, based on the shear deformation compatibility, a theoretical model for predicting the shear capacity of the proposed PCES beams was put forward and verified to be valid with the good agreement of the shear capacities calculated using the proposed method and those from the experiments. Finally, in order to facilitate the preliminary design in practical applications, a simplified calculation method for predicting the shear capacity of the proposed PCES beams was also put forward and validated using available test results.

In this study the seismic performance of welded steel moment connections to built-up box columns in the existing building built before 1994 Northridge earthquake was evaluated by cyclic tests. According to the test results, the pre-Northridge steel moment connections to the box columns also suffered from brittle fracture similar to that in the H-shaped column connections. However, the flange force transfer mechanism of the box column connections was substantially different from that of the H-shaped column connections, and the patterns of crack propagation may be changed due to the shape of the box column. Therefore, it is required to develop proper details for the box column connections instead of using the research results for H-shaped column connections in order to enhance the seismic performance the connections.
A modified method for the analysis of short fatigue crack growth has been presented, and calculations based upon the modified method are compared with experimental results for S45C carbon steel. It is also shown that the modified method is in good agreement with experimental data. The proposed equation for the fatigue crack growth rates includes a material constant which relates the threshold level to the endurance limit, a correction for elastic-plastic behaviour and a means for dealing with the effects of crack closure. In this study one of the modifications is to substitute the Forman' s elastic expression of the stress intensity factor range into the geometrical factor The other is a consideration of the bending effect which is developed from the moment caused by the eccentric cross sectional geometry as the crack grows. Thus, this method is useful for residual life prediction of the mechanical structures as well as the welding structures.
This paper is about proposal of a calculation method and development of an analytical program for predicting crack width and deflection in structural concrete members. The proposed method numerically calculate stresses in steel rebar using a parabola-rectangle stress-strain curve and a modified tension stiffening factor considering the effect of the cover thickness. Based on the study results, a calculation method to predict crack width and deflection in reinforced concrete flexural members is proposed utilizing effective tension area and idealized tension chord as well as effective moment-curvature relationship considering tension stiffening effect. The calculation method was applied to the test specimens available in literatures. The study results showed that the crack width and deflections predicted by the proposed method were closed to the experimentally measured data compared the current design code provisions.

Objective: To achieve optimal fit of implant, it is necessary to bend the implant during spine surgery. Bending procedure may decrease stiffness of plate especially made of titanium and stainless steel. Typically titanium suffers adverse effects including early crack propagation when it is bent. We investigate whether 6 degree bending of titanium plates would decrease the stiffness after full cyclic loading by comparing with non-bending titanium plates group. Methods: Authors experimented 40 titanium alloy plates of 57mm in length, manufactured by 5 different companies. Total 40 plates were divided into two groups (20 bent plates for experimental group and 20 non-bent plates for control group). Twenty plates of experimental group were bent to 6 degree with 3-point bending technique and verified with image analyzer. Using the electron microscope, we sought for a initial crack before and after 3-point bending. Mechanical testing by means of 6000 cyclic axial-compression loading of 35N in compression with moment arm of 35mm-1.1 Nm was conducted on each plate and followed by the electron microscopic examination to detect crack or fissure on plates. Results: The stiffness was decreased after 6000 cyclic loading, but there was no statistically significant difference in stiffness between experimental and control group. There was no evidence of change in grain structure on the electron microscopic magnification. Conclusion: The titanium cervical plates can be bent to 6 degree without any crack or weakness of plate. We also assume that minimal bending may increase the resistance to fatigue fracture in cervical flexion-extension movement.
Although the previous researches evaluated the fatigue behavior of Al/GFRP laminates using the traditional fracture mechanism, their researches were not sufficient to do it : the damage zone of Al/GFRP laminates was occurred at the delamination zone instead of the crack-metallic damages. Thus, previous researches were not applicable to the fatigue behavior of Al/GFRP laminates. The major purpose of this study was to evaluate delamination behavior using the relationship between crack length (a) and delamination width (b) in Al/GFRP laminate. The details of investigation were as follows: 1) Relationship between the crack length (a) and the delamination width (b), 2) Relationship between the delamination aspect ratio (b/a) and the delamination area rate ((A$\_$D/)/subN// (A$\_$D/)$\_$All/), 3) The effect of delamination aspect ratio (b/a) on the delamination shape factor (f$\_$s/) and the delamination growth rate (dA$\_$D// da). As results, it was known that the delamination aspect ratio (b/a) was decreased and the delamination area rate ((A$\_$D/)$\_$N// (A$\_$D/)$\_$All/) was increased as the normalized crack size (a/W) was increased. And, the delamination shape factors (f$\_$s/) of the ellipse-II(f$\_$s3/) was greater than of the ellipse-I(f$\_$s2/) but that of the triangle (f$\_$s1/) was less than of the ellipse-I(f$\_$s2/).
Fibers play a role to increase the tensile strength and cracking resistance of concrete structures. The post cracking behavior must be clarified to predict cracking resistance of fiber reinforced concrete. The purpose of this study is to develop a realistic analysis method for the post cracking behavior of synthetic fiber reinforced concrete members. For this purpose, the cracked section is assumed to behave as a rigid body and the pullout behavior of single fiber is employed. A probabilistic approach is used to calculate effective number of fibers across crack faces. The existing theory is compared with test data and shows good agreement. The proposed theory can be efficiently used to describe the load-deflection behavior, moment-curvature relation, load-crack width relation of synthetic fiber reinforced concrete beams.
Cast duplex stainless steels are susceptible to thermal aging during long-term service at temperatures ranging from $280^{\circ}C$ to $450^{\circ}C$. To analyze the effect of thermal aging on leak-before-break (LBB) behavior, three-dimensional finite element analysis models were built for circumferentially cracked pipes. Based on the elasticeplastic fracture mechanics theory, the detectable leakage crack length calculation and J-integral stability assessment diagram approach were carried out under different bending moments. The LBB curves and LBB assessment diagrams for unaged and thermally aged pipes were constructed. The results show that the detectable leakage crack length for thermally aged pipes increases with increasing bending moments, whereas the critical crack length decreases. The ligament instability line and critical crack length line for thermally aged pipes move downward and to the left, respectively, and unsafe LBB assessment results will be produced if thermal aging is not considered. If the applied bending moment is increased, the degree of safety decreases in the LBB assessment.

A three-dimensional finite element dynamic analysis was conducted to evaluate the effects of reducing cross beams from a simply supported straight P.S.C girder bridge. Two analyses were performed on the P.S.C girder bridge; one with 7 cross beams which is commonly used as current standard, and the other with 3 cross beams. A frequency analysis was conducted first in order to establish the dynamic characteristics of the bridge and determine an appropriate time step to use in the time history analyses. To assess the function and effectiveness of the cross beams, time history analysis was conducted for aforementioned two analysis cases. In the analysis, the complete model was subjected to a loading condition corresponding to the one passing truck loading. Several results of deflection, bending moment and shear forces were compared for two cases. From the analysis results, reduction of cross beams was found to have only a minimum effect on the response of the bridge. The maximum deck slab bending moment was found to decrease. This decrease should result in smaller flexural crack widths in the deck slab, which may lead to an improved deck performance.
