Evolution of sandstone shear strength parameters and its mesoscopic mechanism

  • It is extremely important to obtain rock strength parameters for geological engineering. In this paper, the evolution of sandstone cohesion and internal friction angle with plastic shear strain was obtained by simulating the cyclic loading and unloading tests under different confining pressures using Particle Flow Code software. By which and combined with the micro-crack propagation process, the mesoscopic mechanism of parameter evolution was studied. The results show that with the increase of plastic shear strain, the sandstone cohesion decreases first and then tends to be stable, while the internal friction angle increases first, then decreases, and finally maintains unchanged. The evolution of sandstone shear strength parameters is closely related to the whole process of crack formation, propagation and coalescence. When the internal micro-cracks are less and distributed randomly and dispersedly, and the rock shear strength parameters (cohesion, internal friction angle) are considered to have not been fully mobilized. As the directional development of the internal micro-fractures as well as the gradual formation of macroscopic shear plane, the rock cohesion reduces continuously and the internal friction angle is in the rise stage. As the formation of the macroscopic shear plane, both the rock cohesion and internal friction angle continuously decrease to a certain residual level.

Effects of Fillers on Fatigue Crack Growth Rate of Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (충전제가 EPDM의 피로균열 성장속도에 미치는 영향)

  • Crack growth characteristics of elastomeric materials are an important factor determining the strength and durability. In this study, the fatigue crack growth characteristic of filled EPDM compounds with different reinforcing fillers, such as silica and carbon black, was investigated using a newly designed tester. Frequency and test temperature had significant effects on the fatigue crack growth. The crack growth rate decreased with increasing frequency and the rate increased with increasing temperature. A power law relationship between the tearing energy and crack growth was observed for filled EPDM compounds. The crack growth rate reduced with increasing filler contents. Silica filled EPDM showed a better fatigue resistance than carbon black filled EPDM. The crack growth rate of silica filled EPDM decreased up to 30 phr and increased again at 50 phr. The formation of microductile type pits was observed on the fatigue-failure surface of unfilled EPDM, and relatively coarse surface with randomly distributed tear lines was observed on the failure surface of silica filled EPDM.

The Crack Resistance for PSG and Pe-Sin Films in the Semiconductor Device (반도체소자의 표면보호용 PSG, PE-SIN박막의 항균열특성에 대한 연구)

  • Abstract The crack resistance of PSG(Phosphosilicate Glass) and PE-SiN(Plasma Enhanced CVD S${i_2}{N_4}$)films deposited on aluminium thin films on Si substrate was analyzed in this study. PSG was deposited by AP-CVD and PE- SiN by PE-CVD. All the films underwent repeated heat cycles at 45$0^{\circ}C$for 30 min. Crack formation and development were examined between each heat cycle. The crack behavior was found to be closely related to the stresses in the films. The stress induced by the difference in thermal expansion behavior between the passivation layers and underlying aluminum film may cause the crack. Crack resistance decreases as the thickness of PSG films increases due to the high tensile stress of the films. Phosphorus in the PSG films releases tensile stress and consequently the stress of the films tends to show compressive stress. As a result, crack resistance increased as the concentratin of P in the PSG films increased. Crack resistance in the PE-SiN films also increased with compressive stress. An experimental model to predict crack generation in the PSG and PE-SiN films during heat cycle was suggested.

Characteristics of Fatigue Crack Propagation and Changes in Strain Induced Martensite α' of STS 304 Stainless Steel (LNG 304 스테인레스강의 피로균열전파특성과 변형유발 마르텐사이트 함량의 변화)

  • The effect of initial ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ in STS 304 Stainless Steel on fatigue resistance, and fatigue crack propagation behavior was studied with using C-T specimens. Higher ${\Delta}K_{th}$ was observed in the specimens with the content of 0% initial ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ than in the contents of 2% and 33% initial ${\alpha}^{\prime}$. The difference of da/dN at the same level of ${\Delta}K$ was distinctive in low and intermediate level of ${\Delta}K$ however became less different as the level of ${\Delta}K$ increased. It is because the formation of strain induced martensite occurred readily in lower ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ at the vicinity of the fatigue crack tip, which causes compressive residual stresses resulting in the enhancement of crack closure. In general fatigue cracks propagated transgranular mode and many segments of ridges were observed on the fracture surfaces. At the higher contents of initial ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ appeared the smaller size of ridge segments. Slips in austenite were blocked more frequently by the martensite colonies formed in austenite.

  • Background: A technique developed to produce artificial intergranular stress corrosion cracks in structural components was applied to thick, forged alloy 600 base and alloy 182 weld metals for use in the qualification of nondestructive examination techniques for welded components in nuclear power plants. Methods: An externally controlled procedure was demonstrated to produce intergranular stress corrosion cracks that are comparable to service-induced cracks in both the base and weld metals. During the process of crack generation, an online direct current potential drop method using array probes was used to measure and monitor the sizes and shapes of the cracks. Results: A microstructural characterization of the produced cracks revealed realistic conformation of the crack faces unlike those in machined notches produced by an electrodischarge machine or simple fatigue loading using a universal testing machine. Conclusion: A comparison with a destructive metallographic examination showed that the characteristics, orientations, and sizes of the intergranular cracks produced in this study are highly reproducible.

Behavior of Fatigue Crack Initiation and Growth in SM45C Steel under Biaxial Loading (이축하중을 받는 SM45C강의 피로균열의 발생과 성장거동)

  • Fatigue tests were conducted on SM45C steel using hour-glass shaped smooth tubular specimen under biaxial loading in order to investigate the crack formation and growth at room temperature. Three types of loading systems, were employed fully-reserved cyclic torsion without a superimposed static tension or compression fully-reserved cyclic torsion with a superimposed static tension and fully-reserved cyclic torsion with a superimposed static compression. The test results showed that a superimposed static tensile mean stress reduced fatigue life however a superimposed static compressive mean stress increased fatigue life. Experimental results indicated that cracks were initiated on planes of maximum shear strain whether or not the mean stresses were superimposed. A biaxial mean stress had an effect on the direction that the cracks nucleated and propagated at stage 1 (mode II).

  • The present study makes three original contributions to nanoskinned Ti-6Al-4V materials. The nanoskins were fabricated on Ti-6Al-4V material using various surface treatments: deep rolling (DR), laser shot peening (LSP), and ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM). These surface treatments are newly developed techniques and are becoming more popular in industrial fields. A fatigue strength comparison at up to 106 cycles was conducted on these nanoskinned Ti-6Al-4V materials. Fatigue tests were carried out using MTS under axial loading tension-compression fatigue (R = -1, RT, 5 Hz, sinusoidal wave). The analysis of the crack initiation patterns in the nanoskinned Ti-6Al-4V materials found an interior originating crack pattern and surface originating crack type. Microscopic observation was mainly used to investigate the fatigue fractured sites. These surface modification techniques have been widely adopted, primarily because of the robust grade of their mechanical properties. These are mainly the result of the formation of a large-scale, deep, and useful compressive residual stress, the formation of nanocrystals by the severe plastic deformation (SPD) at the subsurface layer, and the increase in surface hardness.

An Evaluation of the Fracture Behavior for Flash Butt Welding zone by Acoustic Emission Method (AE방법에 의한 Flash Butt 용접부의 파괴거동 평가)

  • In this study, we conducted experimental tests to evaluate fracture behaviors of fresh-butt welded metal by Acoustic Emission technique. We selected similar welding and dissimilar welding process, the one welded for SM45C, SS41 and SUS304 of each material, the other for SM45C and SS41, SM45C and SUS304 and SS41 and SUS304. The fracturing processes of weld metal were estimatied through the fracture toughness test with compact tension specimens and fractography analysis. In ASTM test method E-399, type I curves for materials of this study were obtained by load-cod diagram of fracture toughness test. and 5% offset load( $P_{5}$) was estimated as the estimated crack initial load( $P_{Q}$), The estimated crack initial load( $P_{Q}$) of similar welding materials generally lower than base matal, and then SM45C appeared greatly in decreasing rate of PB, SS41 and SUS304 appeared in order. $P_{Q}$ of dissimilar welding materials were lower than the similar welding materials. $P_{Q}$ of welding of SM45C and SS41 appeared in small, SUS304 and SS41 appeared greatly in dissimilar welding materials. In fracture toughness test, AE counts increased before the inflection point of the slope, decreased after that. It was found that increasing of AE counts were due to the microcrack formation at the crack tip near the $P_{5}$ point through AE data. For welding materials in this study, both low and high AE amplitude appeared simulataneously. It was confirmed that the low AE amplotude was due to formation of micro void, micro crack or micro dimple, the high AE amplitude was caused by microvoid coalescence and quasi-cleavage fracture through analyses of fractograpy.apy.apy.apy.

A Study on the Resistance and Crack Propagation of ITO/PET Sheet with 20 nm Thick ITO Film (20 nm 두께의 ITO층이 코팅된 ITO/PET Sheet의 저항 및 균열형성 특성 연구)

  • The crack formation and the resistance of ITO film on PET substrate with a thickness of 20 nm were investigated as a function of strain. The onset strain for the increase of resistance increased with increasing strain rate, suggesting the crack initiation is dependent on the strain rate. Electrical resistance increased at the strain of 1.6% at the strain rates below $10^{-4}/sec$ while it increased at ${\sim}2%$ at the strain rates above $10^{-3}/sec$. The critical strain at which the cracks were formed is close to the proportional limit. Upon loading, the initial cracks perpendicular to the tensile axis were observed and propagated the whole sample width with increasing strain. The spacing between horizontal cracks is thought to be determined by the fracture strength and the interfacial strength between ITO and PET. The crack density increased with increasing strain. However, the effect of the strain rate on the crack density was less pronounced in ITO/PET with 20 nm ITO thickness than ITO/PET with 125 nm ITO thickness, the strength of ITO film is thought to increase as the thickness on ITO film decreases. The absence of cracks on ITO film at a strain as close as 1.5% can be attributed to the compressive residual stress of ITO film which was developed during cooling after the coating process. The higher critical strain for the onset of the resistance increase and the crack initiation of ITO/PET with a thinner ITO film (20 nm) can be linked with the higher strength of the thinner ITO film.
