An elastic-plastic finite element analysis of fatigue crack closure is performed for plane strain conditions. The stabilization behavior of crack opening level and the effect of mesh size on the crack opening stress are investigated. In order to obtain a stabilized crack opening level for plane strain conditions, the crack must be advanced through approximately four times the initial monotonic plastic zone. The crack opening load tends to increase with the decrease of mesh size. The mesh size nearly equal to the theoretical plane strain cyclic plastic zone size may provide reasonable numerical results comparable with experimental crack opening data. The crack opening behavior is influenced by the crack growth increment and discontinuous opening behavior is observed. A procedure to predict the most appropriate mesh size for different stress ratio is suggested. Crack opening loads predicted by the FE analysis based on the procedure suggested resulted in good agreement with experimental ones within the error of 5 %. Effect of the distance behind the crack tip on the crack opening load determined by the ASTM compliance offset method based on the load-displacement relation and by the rotational offset method based on the load-differential displacement relation is investigated. Optimal gage location and method to determine the crack opening load is suggested.

The stress conditions acting on the practical structure are complex, and thus most cracks existing in the practical structures are under mixed-mode loading conditions. The effect of shear load component of mixed-mode loading acts more greatly in the stage of crack initiation and initial propagation than crack propagation stage. Hence, research on the behavior in the stage of crack initiation and initial propagation need to be examined in order to evaluate behavior of mixed-mode fatigue cracks. In this study, the crack tip displacement(CTD) was measured by using the direct measuring method(DMM). We examined the behavior at crack tip by determining crack opening load$(P_{op})$. From the test results, the propagation behavior of mixed-mode fatigue cracks was evaluated by considering mixed-mode crack closure. Also, we examined the characteristic of crack propagation under mixed-mode loading with crack propagation direction.

The heat resistant material, in service, may experience static loading, cyclic loading, or a combination of two. An experimental study of crack growth behavior of STS 316L austenitic stainless steel under fatigue, and creep-fatigue loading conditions were carried out on compact tension specimens at various tensile hold times. In the crack growth experiments under hold times. In the crack growth experiments under hold time loading conditions, tensile hold times were ranged from 5 seconds to 100 seconds and its behavior was characterized using the $\Delta$K parameter. The crack growth rates generally increase with increasing hold times. However in this material, the trend of crack growth rates decreases with increasing hold times for short hold time range relatively. It is attributed to a decline in the cyclic crack growth rate as a result of blunting at the crack tip by creep deformation. The effect of grain size on the creep behavior of STS 316L was investigated. Specimens with grain size of 30, 65 and 125${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were prepared through various heat treatments and they were tested under various test conditions. The fracture mode of 316L changed from transgranular to intergranular with increasing grain size.
The stress field around the dynamically propagating interface crack tip under a remote mixed mode loading condition has been studied with the aid of dynamic photoelastic method. The variation of stress field around the dynamic interface crack tip is photographed by using the Cranz-Shardin type camera having $10^6$ fps rate. The dynamically propagating crack velocities and the shapes of isochromatic fringe loops are characterized for varying mixed load conditions in double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens. The dynamic interface crack tip complex stress intensity factors, $K_1\;and\;K_2$, determined by a hybrid-experimental method are found to increase as the load mixture ratio of y/x (vertical/horizontal) values. Furthermore, it is found that the dynamically propagating interface crack velocities are highly dependent upon the varying mixed mode loading conditions and that the velocities are significantly small compared to those under the mode I impact loading conditions obtained by Shukla (Singh & Shukla, 1996a, b) and Rosakis (Rosakis et al., 1998) in the USA.

This study was performed to control the thermal crack of the mat footing slab in the multi-purposed buildings. In this study, we executed the mixing design of concrete to satisfy the workability and the quality according to the site conditions. And, we evaluated quantitatively about the possibility of thermal crack by using hydration heat analysis system. Finally, we proposed the optimal mixing conditions, curing methods and curing period which all factors are considered. As a result, the optimal mixing conditions were : W/B 41%, unit binder 375kgf/$\textrm{m}^3$, FA replacement ratio 20%. Lowest thermal stress was 22.0kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and at that time thermal crack index was over 1.5, when the coefficient of thermal conductivity was lowest among the curing conditions. And, the total curing time was estimated at 6.7 days according to curing steps.

An experimental gear-box was set-up to simulate the real situation of the wind-turbine. Artificial cracks of different sizes were machined into the gear. Vibration signals were acquired to diagnose the different crack fault conditions. Time-domain features such as root mean square, variance, kurtosis, normalized 6th central moments were used to capture the characteristics of different crack conditions. Normal condition, 1 mm crack condition, 2mm crack condition, 6mm crack condition, and tooth fault condition were compared using ANFIS and DAG-SVM methods, and three different DAG-SVM models were compared. High-pass filtering improved the success rates remarkably in the case of DAG-SVM.
This study is concerned with the general solution of the field intensity factors and energy release rate for a Griffith crack in a piezoelectric ceramic of finite radius under combined anti-plane mechanical and in-plane electrical loading. Both electrically continuous and impermeable crack surface conditions are considered. Employing Mellin transforms and Fourier series, the problem is reduced to dual integral forms. The solution to the resulting expressions is expressed in terms of Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. The solutions are provided to study the influence of the crack length, the crack surface boundary conditions on the intensity factors and the energy release rate.

The effect of temperature, frequency and microstructure on fatigue crack propagation property of Ti-6A1-4V alloy has been investigated. The temperatures employed were room temperature, 20$0^{\circ}C$ and 40$0^{\circ}C$. The frequencies were 20Hz and 8 Hz. The microstructures tested were equiaxed and bimodal microstructures. Mechanical properties and fatigue crack growth rates were measured in different test conditions. From the experimental results, following conclusions were obtained. Bimodal microstructure showed superior fatigue crack growth resistance to equiaxed microstructure. Under all test conditions, fatigue crack growth rate increased with test temperature. Wine the frequency decreasing from 20Hz to 8Hz, fatigue crack growth rate increased.

The steady state thermal stress intensity factors (TSIF's) are analyzed for hypocycloid, symmetric airfoil and symmetric lip type rigid inclusions embedded in infinite elastic solids, using Boganoff's complex variable approach in plane thermoplasticity. Two thermal conditions are considered, one with an uniform heat flow disturbed by an insulated rigid inclusion of cusp crack shape and the other with an uniform heat flow disturbed by a rigid inclusion of cusp crack shape with fixed boundary temperature. The tendencies of TSIF's for rigid inclusions of cusp crack shape are somewhat different from those of traction free cusp cracks. However, if k=-1, the non-dimensionalized TSIF's for rigid inclusions of cusp crack shape become those of traction free cusp cracks like the tendencies of the SIF's under mechanical loading conditions. The thermal stress and displacement components for a rigid circular inclusion of radius Ro are drived from the results of a hypocycloid crack type rigid inclusion.
