This paper discusses 2D lattice models of beams for simulating the fracture of brittle materials. A simulation of an experiment on a concrete beam subjected to bending, in which two overlapping cracks occur, is used to study the effect of individual beam characteristics and different arrangements of the beams in the overall lattice. It was found that any regular orientation of the beams influences the resulting crack patterns. Methods to implement a wide range of Poisson's ratios are also developed, and the use of the lattice to study arbitrary micro-structures is outlined. The crack patterns that are obtained with lattice are in good agreement with the experimental results. Also, numerical simulations of the tests were performed by means of a lattice model, and non-integer dimensions were measured on the predicted lattice damage patterns.
In this paper, we consider the dynamic electromechanical behavior of an eccentric Yoffe permeable crack in a piezoelectric ceramic strip sandwiched between two elastic materials under the combined anti-plane mechanical shear and in-plane electrical loadings. Fourier transforms are used to reduce the problem to the solution of two pairs of dual integral equations, which are then expressed to a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. The initial crack propagation orientation for PZT-5H piezoceramics is predicted by maximum energy release rate criterion.

Monitoring surface cracks is important to ensure the health of concrete structures. However, traditional visual inspection to monitor the concrete cracks has disadvantages such as subjective inspection nature, associated time and cost, and possible danger to inspectors. To alter the visual inspection, a complete procedure for automated crack assessment based on adaptive digital image processing has been proposed in this study. Crack objects are extracted from the images using the subtraction with median filter and the local binarization using the Niblack's method. To adaptively. determine the optimal window sizes for the median filter and the Niblack's method without distortion of crack object an optimal filter size index (OFSI) is proposed. From the extracted crack objects using the optimal size of window, the crack objects are decomposed to the crack skeletons and edges, and the crack width is calculated using 4-connected normal line according to the orientation of the local skeleton line. For an image, a crack width nephogram is obtained to have an intuitive view of the crack distribution. The proposed procedure is verified from a test on a concrete reaction wall with various types of cracks. From the crack images with different crack widths and patterns, the widths of cracks in the order of submillimeters are calculated with high accuracy.
Microstructure, mechanical and fatigue behaviors of TiCN and TiN/TiCN thin films, deposited on quenched and tempered STD61 tool steel, were investigated by using XRD, XPS, hardness, adhesion and fatigue tests. The TiCN thin film is grown along the (100), (111) orientation, whereas the TiN/TiCN thin film is grown along the (111) orientation. The preferred orientation of TiN/TiCN thin film strongly depends on the TiN buffer layer whose orientation is (111), as is well-known. The TiN/TiCN thin film showed the higher adhesion compared with TiCN single layer because the TiN buffer layer, having good toughness, reduces the effects of the lower hardness of substrate. In the high cycle tension-tension fatigue test, the fatigue life of the TiCN and the TiN/TiCN coated steel increased approximately two to four times and five to nine times respectively compared with uncoated specimens. The TiN buffer layer in multilayer thin films plays an important role in reducing residual stress and fatigue crack initiation, and then in restraining the fatigue propagation.

The effects of the stress ratio and the fiber orientation(0.deg./90.deg. and .+-.45.deg.) to the load direction on the fracture behavior of the glass/epoxy plain woven composites were studied. The tests were carried out using compact tension specimens under both static and fatigue loading. The values of $k_{a}$ obtained from the energy release rate are independent of notch depth(a/w=0.2~0.6) for the 0.deg./90.deg. specimens, but decreases with an increase in a/w for the .+-.45.deg. specimens. And $k_{q}$ has higher values than $k_{ASTM}$ has been evaluated by the ASTM E399 test procedure. It is shown in the relation between fatigue crack growth rate da/dN and stress intensity factor range .DELTA.K using modified shape correction factor that da/dN decreases with a decrease in stress ratio and is lower for .+-..deg. specimens than for 0.deg./90.deg. These phenomena can be explained by the crack deflection to the load direction.n.n.
Two specimens of mortar containing artificial slit and Geochang granite containing the straight notch were selected to be used in this research. Source mechanism of micro-crack by radiation pattern based on dislocation the-ory was estimated by the first motion of longitudinal wave and spatial distribution between the location of transducers for monitoring acoustic emission and source coordinates determined by the application of the least square method. Result of analysis showed that the orientation of dislocation surfaces due to shear dislocation and tensile dislocation squares considerably with crack direction visually observed. The ultimate goal of this study is to provide fundamental information for source mechanism of micro-crack within materials.

In this research, damage initiation in singly oriented ply (SOP) FML under concentrated loading conditions was studied. The finite element method (FEM) base on the first order shear deformation theory is used for the analysis of fiber orientation effect on FML under concentrated loading conditions. The failure indices were calculated for the variation of fiber orientation and the results were compared with indentation experiments. The failure indices were well matched with damage initiation of SOP FML. Indentation results shows that the crack initiation of SOP FML is determined by stiffness induced by fiber orientation and tile penetration load of SOP FML are influenced by the deformation tendency and boundary conditions.
Modal analysis of cracked cantilever composite beams, made of graphite-fibre reinforced polyamide, is studied. By using the finite element and component mode synthesis methods, a numeric model applicable to investigate the vibration of cracked composite beams is developed. In this new approach, from the crack section, the composite beam separated into two parts coupled by a flexibility matrix taking into account the interaction forces. These forces are derived from the fracture mechanics theory as the inverse of the compliance matrix calculated with the proper stress intensity factors and strain energy release rate expressions. Numerical results are obtained for modal analysis of composite beams with a transverse non-propagating open crack, addressing the effects of the location and depth of the crack, and the volume fraction and orientation of the fibre on the natural frequencies and mode shapes. By means of modal data, the position and dimension of the defect can be found. The results of the study confirmed that presented method is suitable for the vibration analysis of cracked cantilever composite beams. Present technique can be easily extended to composite plates and shells.

The effects of pre-indentation technique are presented for A12024-T3 Alclad alloy using as skin material for aircraft fuselage and wing. Indentations were applied to specimens to be placed on the presumed path of fatigue crack growth before fatigue tests. Tension-tension fatigue tests were conducted on the edge cracked specimens in the L-T orientation. Test results were analyzed to investigate the effectiveness of pre-indentation with the variation of specimen's thickness, position of indentation and applied maximum stress. Fatigue crack retardation by pre-indentation is well recognized in the various conditions.
