Due to fast growth in urbanisation, a highly developed infrastructure is essential for economic growth and prosperity. One of the major problems is to preserve, maintain, and retrofit these structures. To meet the requirements of construction industry, the basic information on all the mechanical properties of various concretes is essential. This paper presents the details of development of various concretes, namely, normal strength concrete (around 50 MPa), high strength concrete (around 85 MPa) and ultra high strength concrete (UHSC) (around 120 MPa) including their mechanical properties. The various mechanical properties such as compressive strength, split tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, fracture energy and tensile stress vs crack width have been obtained from the respective test results. It is observed from the studies that a higher value of compressive strength, split tensile strength and fracture energy is achieved in the case of UHSC, which can be attributed to the contribution at different scales viz., at the meso scale due to the fibers and at the micro scale due to the close packing of grains which is on account of good grading of the particles. Micro structure of UHSC mix has been examined for various magnifications to identify the pores if any present in the mix. Brief note on characteristic length and brittleness number has been given.

This paper proposes engineering estimation equations of elastic-plastic J and COD fur axial through-wall cracked pipes under internal pressure. Based on detailed 3-D FE results based on deformation plasticity, the plastic influence functions for fully plastic J and COD solutions are tabulated as a function of the mean radius-to-thickness ratio, the normalized crack length. and the strain hardening. Based on these results, the GE/EPRI-type J and COD estimation equations are proposed and validated against the 3-D FE results based on deformation plasticity. For more general application to general stress-strain laws or to complex loading, the developed GE/EPRI-type solutions are re-formulated based on the reference stress concept. Such a reformulation provides simpler equations for J and COD, which are then further extended to combined internal pressure and bending. The proposed reference stress based J and COD estimation equations are compared with elastic-plastic 3-D FE results using actual stress-strain data for Type 316 stainless steels. The FE results for both internal pressure cases and combined internal pressure and bending cases compare very well with the proposed J and COD estimations.

The plane stress fracture toughness for thin aluminum alloy(2024-T3 and 7075-T6) specimens are characterized by using compact-tension (CT) specimens. Anti-buckling plates were fabricated on both sides of the thin CT specimens to prevent the buckling phenomena which caused by the 45.deg. C plastic yielding at the crack tip under the plane stress condition. The plane stress fracture toughnesses determined by three different procedures are compared with each others. The plane stress fracture toughnesses are also compared with a few published values which were determined by using center-cracked panel specimens.
A composite model is used to represent the heterogeneity of plain concrete consisting of coarse aggregates, mortar matrix and the mortar-aggregate interface. The composite elements of plain concrete are modeled using triangular finite element units which have six interface nodes along the sides. Fracture is captured through a constitutive single branch softening-fracture law at the interface nodes, which bounds the elastic domain inside each triangular unit. The inelastic displacement at an interface node represents the crack opening or sliding displacement and is conjugate to the internodal force. The path-dependent softening behaviour is developed within a quasi-prescribed displacement control formulation. The crack profile is restricted to the interface boundaries of the defined mesh. No re-meshing is carried out. Solutions to the rate formulation are obtained using a mathematical programming procedure in the form of a linear complementary problem. An event by event solution strategy is adopted to eliminate solutions with simultaneous formation of softening zones in symmetric problems. The composite plain concrete model is compared to experimental results for the tensile crack growth in a Brazilian test and three-point bending tests on different sized specimens. The model is also used to simulate wedge-type shear-compression failure directly under the loading platen of a Brazilian test.
In this paper, we present a 3D thermo-hydro-mechanical coupled discrete beam lattice model of structure built of the nonisothermal saturated poro-plastic medium subjected to mechanical loads and nonstationary heat transfer conditions. The proposed model is based on Voronoi cell representation of the domain with cohesive links represented as inelastic Timoshenko beam finite elements enhanced with additional kinematics in terms of embedded strong discontinuities in axial and both transverse directions. The enhanced Timoshenko beam finite element is capable of modeling crack formation in mode I, mode II and mode III. Mode I relates to crack opening, mode II relates to in-plane crack sliding, and mode III relates to the out-of-plane shear sliding. The pore fluid flow and heat flow in the proposed model are governed by Darcy's law and Fourier's law for heat conduction, respectively. The pore pressure field and temperature field are approximated with linear tetrahedral finite elements. By exploiting nodal point quadrature rule for numerical integration on tetrahedral finite elements and duality property between Voronoi diagram and Delaunay tetrahedralization, the numerical implementation of the coupling results with additional pore pressure and temperature degrees of freedom placed at each node of a Timoshenko beam finite element. The results of several numerical simulations are presented and discussed.
In this study we simulate the fatigue test of a compact tension specimen and obtain the displacements, stresses and strains by using the finite element method. And we examine the path independency of $\Delta$J integral values and compare it with $\Delta$J integral values calculated from load-load line displacement curve. From the results of this study, we can find that $\Delta$J integral show the path Independency for saturated materials. We can also find that the path independency of $\Delta$J Is not satisfied when different material Is assumed near the crack tip, but the difference in $\Delta$J is small. And $\Delta$J integral values calculated from load-load line displacement is very analogous with those from integration path but always have lower values than those from integration paths. In the case of crack closing, we found that $\Delta$J integral values from load-load line displacement should be calculated with the load Increment values based on the crack opening point. The unsaturated material is also simulated and its $\Delta$J shows different values according to the path, but the difference is small.
This study explores the failure mechanisms of 'I' shaped non-persistent cracks under uniaxial loads through a combination of experimental tests and numerical simulations. Concrete specimens measuring 200 mm×200 mm×50 mm were manufactured, featuring 'I' shaped non-persistent joints. The number of these joints varied from one to three, with angles set at 0, 30, 60, and 90 degrees. Twelve configurations, differing in the placement of pre-existing joints, were considered, where larger joints measured 80 mm in length and smaller cracks persisted for 20 mm with a 1 mm crack opening. Numerical models were developed for the 12 specimens, and loading in Y-axis direction was 0.05 mm/min, considering a concrete tensile strength of 5 MPa. Results reveal that crack starting was primarily influenced by the slope of joint that lacks persistence in relation to the loading direction and the number of joints. The compressive strength of the samples exhibited variations based on joint layout and failure mode. The study reveals a correlation between the failure behavior of joints and the number of induced tensile fracture, which increased with higher joint angles. Specimen strength increased with decreasing joint angles and numbers. The strength and failure processes exhibited similarities in both laboratory testing and numerical modeling methods.

Objective of this study is to understand the diagonal reinforcement around openings on the control of diagonal crack, load distribution, and ultimate strength of reinforced concrete two-span continuous deep beams. Test results of four specimens showed that the strength lost by openings might be completed when diagonal reinforcement ratio was above 0.0014.

In this study, the fatigue characteristic of spot weld specimen was studied by using the various specimen. The specimen types were tensile shear specimen welded one spot and two spot, and cross tension. The tensile tests and fatigue tests were executed to know the mechanical properties under static and fatigue load condition. In addition, the relationship was illustrated by finite element method.
