A Study on Fatigue Crack Growth of Composite Patching Repaired on Cracked Thick Plate (복합재료 보강재로 보수되어진 균열을 가진 두꺼운 평판의 피로균열 성장에 관한 연구)

  • An experimental investigation of the effect of composite patching repair was conducted to characterize the fatigue crack growth behavior in thick A16061-T6 (6mm) panels with single bonded patch by fiber reinforced composite patch. Four patch lengths and no patch plate were examined. An analytical procedure, involving three-dimensional finite element method having three layers to model cracked aluminum plate, epoxy by adhesive and composite Patch, is calculated the stress intensity factors. From the calculated stress intensity factors, the fatigue crack growth rates are obtained. At the single patching type, different fatigue crack growth ratios through the palate thickness were investigated by using the experimental and analytical results. The results demonstrated that there was a definite variation in fatigue life depending on the size of composite patch. While crack reached the patch end, retardation of crack growth was also revealed in the bonded repair.

Influence of overload on the fatigue crack growth retardation and the statistical variation (강의 피로균열지연거동에 미치는 과대하중의 영향과 통계적 변동에 관한 연구)

  • Constant .DELTA.K fatigue crack growth rate experiments were performed by applying an intermediate single and multiple overload for structural steel, SM45C. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the influence of multiple overloads at various stress intensity factor ranges and the effect of statistical variability of crack retardation behavior. The normalized delayed load cycle, delayed crack length and the minimum crack growth rate are increased with increasing baseline stress intensity factor range when the overload ratio and the number of overload application were constant. The crack retardation under low baseline stress intensity factor range increases by increasing the number of overload application, but the minimum crack growth rate decreases by increasing the number of overload application. A strong linear correlation exists between the minimum crack growth rate and the number of overload applications. And, it was observed that the variability in the crack growth retardation behavior are presented, the probability distribution functions of delayed load cycle, delayed crack length and crack growth life are 2-parameter Weibull. The coefficient of variation of delayed load cycle and delayed crack length for the number of 10 overload applications data are 14.8 and 9.2%, respectively.

  • In this study, an effect that compressive residual stress formed by shot-peening the surface of spring steel(JISG SUP-9) at each shot velocity(1800, 2200, 2600, 3000rpm) on the fatigue crack growth property and threshold stress intensity factor, ${\Delta}K_{th}$, was examined. Followings are the result (1) Compressive residual stress on surface of specimen was determined at each -601 MPa(1800rpm), -638 MPa(2200rpm), -587 MPa (2600rpm), -550 MPa(3000rpm) by shot velocity of shot peening and threshold stress intensity factor, ${\Delta}K_{th}$, fatigue crack growth rate, da/dN, on fatigue crack growth is obstructed by the compressive residual stress was determined at each $5.619\;MPa\sqrt{m}$(Un-peening), $8.319\;MPa\sqrt{m}$(1800rpm), $8.797\;MPa\sqrt{m}$(2200rpm), $7.835\;MPa\sqrt{m}$(2600rpm), $7.352\;MPa\sqrt{m}$(3000rpm) (2) Existing compressive residual stress by effect of shot velocity of shot-peening on relation of crack length. a, and number of cycle, N, was 2 times progressed in case of 2200rpm than specimen of Un-peening on fatigue life. And fatigue life was 1.6 times progressed incase of 3000rpm by Over peening. (3) Fatigue life of Material on Paris' law, $da/dN=C({\Delta}K)^m$, that effect of material constant, C, and fatigue crack growth exponent, m, was influenced by effect of. C and m.

  • A method of estimating B$_{\alpha}$ life of crack growth is proposed based on the linear elastic fracture mechanic model. It is assumed that the coefficients in the Paris-Erdogan equation are random variables and their distributions are estimated by the method of 2-stage estimation from the fatigue crack growth data.   • Cracks in mechanical joints is generally under mixed-mode and there is the critical inclined angle at which mode I stress intensity factor becomes maximum. In order to evaluate the fatigue life of cracks in mechanical joints, horizontal crack normal to the applied load and located on minimum cross section is major concern but critical inclined crack must also be considered. In this paper mixed-mode fatigue crack growth test is performed for horizontal crack and critical inclined crack in mechanical joints. Fatigue crack growth path is predicted by maximum tangential stress criterion using mode I and mode II stress intensity factors obtained from weight function method, and fatigue crack growth rates of horizontal and inclined crack are compared.

  • The fatigue cracks initiate and propagate in the Armored Vehicle Launch Bridge (AVLB) components, especially like the splice doubler angle, splice plate, and bottom chord, due to the cyclic loading by repeated AVLB-launchings and tank-crossings. In this study, laboratory fatigue tests were conducted on six aluminum 2014-T6, four aluminum 7050-T76511, and four ASTM A36 steel compact-tension specimens to evaluate the crack growth behavior of the materials used for the components. The experimental results provide the relationship (Paris Law) between crack growth rate, da/dn, and stress intensity range, ${\Delta}K$, whose material dependent constants C and m can later be used in the life estimation of the components. Finite Element Method (FEM) was used to obtain the stress intensity factor, K, of the components with cracks. Because of the complexity of loading conditions and component geometry, several assumptions and simplifications are made in the FEM modeling. The FEM results, along with the results obtained from laboratory fatigue tests, are then utilized to estimate critical crack length and remaining life of the components.

  • Application of the relationship $da/dN=C({\Delta}K)^{m}$ is effective in the analysis of fatigue crack growth life. The values of material constant C and m have great influences on the predicted fatigue life and the relationship between fatigue crack growth rate(da/dN) and stress intensity factor range(${\Delta}K$) is effective in fatigue crack growth behavior. In this paper, fatigue crack growth behavior of the welded joints in HT60 grade TMCP(Thermo Machanical Control Process) steel have been studied. To evalute the fatigue crack growth rates of HT60 grade TMCP steel, fatigue test was performed by base metal(BM), heat affected zone(HAZ) and weld metal(WM) in TMCP steel at room temperature. We determined the relationship of $da/dN-{\Delta}K$ by correlation between C and m obtained from the Paris-Erdogan power law data supplied HT60 grade TMCP steel. The obtained results from this study indicate that fatigue crack growth rate of TMCP steel is not influenced by softening effect which occurs in the HAZ when high heat input weld is carried out. Softening effects, which affect fatigue properties. are shown that it is not affected to the fatigue growth rates significantly.

  • Fracture life and crack retardation behavior were examined experimentally using CT specimens of aluminum alloy 5083. Crack retardation life and fracture life were a wide difference. between 0.8 and 0.6 in proportion to ratio of load reduction. The wheeler model retardation parameter was used successfully to predict crack growth behavior. By using a crack propagation rule, prediction of fracture life can be evaluated quantitatively. A statistical approach based on Weibull distribution was applied to the test data to evaluate the dispersion in the retardation life and fracture life by the change of load reduction.

  • For fitness-for-service evaluation of high temperature plant components with defects, crack growth life must be assessed properly as indicated in the recent draft of API 579 code. Type 308 stainless steel has been widely used as a field weld material in the petrochemical industry. In this study, creep crack data of type 308 stainless steel are collected and re-analyzed using $C_t$ as a characterizing fracture parameter. A unique da/dt versus $C_t$ relationship was obtained despite of difference of creep deformation constant of the reviewed materials and specimen geometry of the tested specimens. The obtained results can be employed for crack growth life assessment and fitness-for-service evaluation for the cracks in high temperature components. It is also argued that since the effect of creep properties and other material variability on the creep crack growth behavior would be minor the obtained model may be applied for most of the 308 stainless steels.

  • The objective of this paper is to develop a computational model for predicting the fatigue propagation of collinear multiple surface cracks under constant amplitude and variable amplitude loadings. After examining fatigue crack growth behavior for CT specimens and single surface crack specimens, empirical equations of(11) and(12) are proposed for the prediction of fatigue life in a multiple surface crack geometry. The accuracy of the proposed model is verified using a life prediction computer program. Several case studies were performed to check the accuracy of the proposed model and to verify the usefulness of the developed program. Good agreement is observed between the numerical results based on the proposed model and the published experimental data.
