Cold expansion is an efficient way to improve the fatigue life of an open hole. In this paper, three finite element models have been established to bind the crack growth from an expanded hole and simulated. Expansion and its degree influence are studied using a numerical analysis. Stress intensity factors are determined and used to evaluate the fatigue life. Residual stress field is evaluated using a nonlinear analysis and superposed with the applied stresses field in order to estimate fatigue crack growth. Experimental tests are conducted under constant loading. Results of this investigation indicate expansion and its degree are beneficial to fatigue life and a good agreement was observed between FEM simulations and experimental results.

Creep-fatigue crack growth behavior was experimentally measured particularly when a crack was located in the heat affected region of lCr-5Mo steel. Load hold times of the tests for trapezoidal fatigue waveshapes were varied among 0, 30, 300 and 3,600 seconds. Time-dependent crack growth rates were characterized by the $C_r$parameter. It was found that the crack growth rates were the highest when the crack path was located along the fine-grained heat affected zone(FGHAZ). Cracks located in other heat affected regions had a tendency to change the crack path eventually to FGHAZ. Creep-fatigue crack growth law of the studied case is suggested in terms of (da/dt)$_{avg}$ vs. ($C_t$)$_{avg}$ for residual life assessment.

In crack growth life, uncertainties are caused by variance of geometry, applied loads and material properties. Therefore, the reliability estimation for these uncertainties is required to keep the robustness of calculated life. The stress intensity factors are the most important variable in crack growth life calculation, but its equation is hard to know for complex geometry, therefore they are processed by the finite element analysis which takes long time. In this paper, the response surface is considered to increase efficiency of the reliability analysis for crack growth life of a turbine wheel. The approximation model of the stress intensity factors is obtained by the regression analysis for FEA data and the response surface of crack growth life is generated for selected factors. The reliability analysis is operated by the Monte Carlo Simulation for the response surface. The results indicate that the response surface could reduce computations that need for reliability analysis for the turbine wheel, which is hard to derive stress intensity factor equation, successfully.

This paper deals with surface crack behavior and the fatigue life prediction of notched specimens using the relation between surface crack length, a, and the cycle ratio, $N/N_{f}$. From the $a-N\;/\;N_{f}$ curves, UC(the upper limit curve), LC(the lower limit curve) and MC(the middle limit curve) were assumed and utilized to predict the fatigue life and crack growth rate. The data computed from the three assumed curves were compared with the experimental data. It has been found that in the stable crack growth region ($N/N_{f}=0.3-0.8$) fatigue life can be predicted within 20% errors. Using the characteristics of $a-N\;/\;N_{f}$ curve, it is possible to predict the $da/dN-K_{max}$ curve, the $da/dN-{\Delta}K_{{\varepsilon}_t}$ curve, and the $S-N_{f}$ curve.
This paper analyzed the extension effects of fatigue life and the application of pre-indentation in aircraft structural material such as aluminum alloys. The test specimen used the thin sheet of aluminum alloy with a single-edged notch. The experiments were conducted after making the pre-crack under a constant amplitude loading. As the fatigue life extension technique, the pre-indentation making an indent on the predicted path of crack propagation was applied. The work presented here discussed about a proper mathematical relation between crack growth rate and the range of stress intensity factor and about the generalization of crack growth mechanism with large retardation effect. A technique to enhance the applicability of pre-indentation if also mentioned.

For gas turbine engines, the safe life methodology has historically been used fur fatigue life management of failure critical engine components. The safe retirement limit is necessarily determined by a conservative life evaluation procedure, thereby many components which have a long residual life are discarded. The objective of this study is to introduce the damage tolerant design concept into the life management for aircraft engine component instead of conservative fatigue life methodology which has been used for both design and maintenance. Crack growth data were collected on a nickel base superalloy which have been subjected to combined static and cyclic loading at elevated temperatures. Stress analysis fur turbine disk was carried out. The program for computing creep-fatigue crack growth was developed. The residual lifes of turbine disk component under various temperatures and conditions using creep-fatigue crack growth data were estimated. As the result of analysis, it was confirmed that retirement fur cause concept was applicable to the evaluation of residual life of retired turbine disk which had been designed based on the conventional fatigue life methodology.
In order to simulate the crack connection between cords and the interply crack growth in the belt-layer of real tire, 2 ply rubber/cord laminate specimens with exposed edges were tested in 4~11mm displacement control. Measurement of the crack connection is evaluated when crack reaches the half of the length between 45$^{\circ}$ aligned cords, and the amount of the crack growth is measured by the steel probe method. 2 dimensional analytic modeling was performed to simulate the crack connection between cords at the exposed edges. Also, the theoretical life of the specimens was calculated from the crack connection life between cords(critical value) and from the critical value to the final failure by the use of Tearing energy(T); the strain energy release per unit area of one fracture surface of a crack. Then, theoretical life was compared with those of experiments. The life prediction up to the critical value has about 20% error compared to experimental life, and up to the final failure about 65% error. Therefore, total theoretical life has about 45% error compared to the experimental life, which is conceivable in the case of rubber.

At early stage of creep-fatigue crack growth tests, initial transient behavior which implies high crack growth rate has been generally observed by some researchers. Since the influence of the initial transient crack growth behavior on the remaining life of components is significant, cause of it should be further studied. In this study, characteristics of the initial transient behavior of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel is studied experimentally by performing creep-fatigue crack growth tests at $538^{\circ}C$ in air under trapezoidal waveshapes. It is verified that the cause of the initial transient behavior is not high ${(C_t)}_{avg}$ values due to the small scale creep condition at the early stage of test, but oxidation-dominated crack growth mechanism during the transient period which is different from the creep-dominated crack growth mechanism in steady crack growth period.
Fatigue life and crack retardation behavior after penetration were experimentally examined using surface pre-cracked specimens of aluminium alloy 5083. The Wheeler model retardation parameter was used successfully to predict crack growth behavior after penetration. By using a crack propagation rule, the change in crack shape after penetration can be evaluated quantitatively. Advanced, waveform-based acoustic emission (AE) techniques have been successfully used to evaluate signal characteristics obtained form fatigue crack propagation and penetratin behavior in 6061 aluminum plate with surface crack under fatigue stress. Surface defects in the structural members are apt to be origins of fatigue crack growth, which may cause serious failure of the whole structure. The nondestructive analysis on the crack growth and penetration from these defects may, therefore, be one of the most important subjects on the reliability of the leak before break (LBB) design. The goal of the present study is to determine if different sources of the AE could be identified by characteristics of the waveforms produced from the crack growth and penetration. AE signals detected in four stages were found to have different signal per stage. With analysis of waveform and power spectrum in 6061 aluminum alloys with a surface crack, it is found to be capabilities on real-time monitoring for the crack propagation and penetration behavior of various damages and defects in structural members.
