  • For the CT specimen of 25.4mm thickness SS400 steel, the fracture toughness and the magnitude of constraint effect, $A_2$ on the non-linear elastoplastic fracture behaviors were experimentally estimated by crack tip opening displacement. In order to estimate constraint effect, displacement measurement position near crack front should be the existed within plastic region. But it is found that the displacement measurement positions by the ${\delta}_5$ method are in elastic region at crack growth initiation. Hence the estimate of constraint effect, $A_2$ by the ${\delta}_5$ method was not reliable.

  • In this study, CT specimens were prepared from spring steel(SUP9) processed shot peening which was room temperature, low temperature and high temperature experiment. And we got the following characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room, and high temperature at $25^{\circ}C,\; 50^{\circ}C, \;100^{\circ}C,\; 150^{\circ}C,\; and\; 180^{\circ}C$ in the range of stress ratio of 0.05 by means of opening mode displacement. The threshold stress intensity factor range $\DeltaK_{th}$ in the early stage of fatigue crack growth (Region I ) and stress intensity factor range $\Delta$K in the stable of fatigue crack growth (Region II) was decreased in proportion to descend temperature. It assumed that the fatigue resistance characteristics and fracture strength at low temperature and high temperature is considerable higher than that of room temperature in the early stage and stable of fatigue crack growth region.

  • Among rail defects, the transverse crack, which has been the most dangerous fatigue damage, is developed from shelling near the rail running face and grows perpendicular to the rail surface. Moreover, the crack has occurred frequently fatigue damage during winter. Therefore, to assure the safety of railway vehicles, it is necessary to investigate growth behavior of transverse crack for rail steel. In this study, fatigue crack growth behavior of rail steel and its gas pressure welded part at room and low temperature are performed. The fatigue crack growth rate of the welded part was lower than that of the base part within a lower ${\Delta}K$ region at both room and low temperature, and this difference decreases with increasing the ${\Delta}K$ due to the decrease of the fracture toughness.

  • The fatigue crack growth behavior in GTA butt welded joints of Al-Alloy 5052-H38 was examined using Single Edge Notched(SEN) specimens. It is well known that welding residual stress has marked influence on fatigue crack growth rate in welded structure. In the general area of fatigue crack growth in the presence of residual stress, it is noted that the correction of stress intensity factor (K) to account for residual stress is important for the determination of both stress intensity factor range(.DELTA.K) and stress ratio(R) during a loading cycle. The crack growth rate(da/dN) in welded joints were correlated with the effective stress intensity factor range(.DELTA.Keff) which was estimated by superposition of the respective stress intensity factors for the residual stress field and for the applied stress. However, redistribution of residual stress occurs during crack growth and its effect is not negligible. In this study, fatigue crack growth characteristics of the welded joints were examined by using superposition of redistributed residual stress and discussed in comparison with the results of the initial welding residual stress superposition.

  • This study describes the fatigue characteristics for Al2024 alloy, which is aircraft structure material. For this work, the plane-strain fracture toughness test, the plane-stress fracture toughness test and the crack growth rates test were conducted under the standard testing method. Test equipment is a computer-controlled closed-loop fatigue testing machine. The data of each test result is very important to aircraft structure reliability estimation, life prediction, design analysis, endurance analysis and damage tolerance analysis. In addition, the fatigue crack growth threshold($\DeltaKth$) value decreased as the stress ratio increased. Also, $\DeltaKth$ decreased as the thickness increased in LT, TL directions.

  • In this study, CT specimens were prepared from ASTH A5l6 steel which was used for pressure vessel plates for moderate and lower temperature service. And we got the fellowing characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room and low temperature at $25^{\circ}C$ , $-30^{\circ}C$, $-60^{\circ}C$, $-80^{\circ}C$, $-100^{\circ}C$ and $-120^{\circ}C$ and in the range of stress ratio of 0.1, 0.3 by means of opening mode displacement. At the constant stress ratio, the Threshold stress intensity factor range ΔAKth in the early stage of fatigue crack growth (Region I) and stress intensity factor range $\DeltaK$ in the stable of fatigue crack growth (Region II) was increased in proportion to descend temperature. It assumed that the fatigue resistance characteristics and fracture strength at low temperature is considerable higher than that of room temperature in the early stage and stable of fatigue crack growth region. The straight line slope relation of logarithm da/dN-$\Delta$K in Region II that is, the fatigue clack growth exponent m increased with descending temperature at the constant stress ratio. It assumed that the fatigue crack growth rate da/dN is rapid in proportion to descend temperature in Region II and the cryogenic-brittleness greatly affect a material with decreasing temperature.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the corrosion fatigue crack growth of PWTHT specimens(SS41, SM53B) which are the compact tension ones extracted from the muti-passed weldment and weld block. The corrosion fatigue test was done at the cyclic stress frequency of 3Hz in 3.5% NaCl solution. The results are as follows. 1. Corrosion fatigue crack growth of as-weld was slower than that of base metal. 2. In the low .DELTA.K region, the effect of corrosion environment on crack growth was obvious. However, the corrosion effect decreased with the .DELTA.K slowly. 3. The behaviour of fatigue and corrosion fatigue crack growth depended on the material, heat treatment as well as experimental conditions. 4. Corrosion fatigue crack growth of PWHT specimens(SS41, SM53B) subjected to 1/4hr, was increased compared with that of as-weld. 5. There was a tendency that the exponent value(m) obtained in 3.5% NaCl solution was decreased in comparison with that in air, and the material constant(C)was increased for Paris equation, da/dN=C((.DELTA.K))$^{m}$ , compared with that in air considerably.

  • Rotating bending fatigue tests of an authentic steel 304 were performed at various temperatures such as room temperature, $538^{\circ}$ and $593^{\circ}C$. The plastic replica method was also applied in order to estimate the fatigue life on the basis of serial observation of small fatigue crack initiation and growth on the pit specimen surface. The fatigue crack growth behavior of 304 stainless steel was investigated within the frame work of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics within a narrow scatterband in spite of different stress levels at elevated temperature as at room temperature. The growth law of small surface crack is determined uniquely by the term. $\DELTA\sigma^{n}a$ where $\DELTA\sigma$ is the stress amplitude, a is the crack length, and n is a constant. It is found that the small crack growth behavior is basically equivalent to the S-$N_{f}$ relationship, where S and $N_{f}$ are stress and number of cycles to failure, and the fatigue life prediction is in good agreement with the experimental results.
