  • Films of CrAlN and CrZrN were deposited on a steel substrate by closed field unbalanced magnetron sputtering, and their oxidation behaviors were investigated. CrAlN films consisted of dense, polycrystalline CrN and AlN fine columns. The formed oxides consisted primarily of crystalline $Cr_2O_3$ incorporated with $Al_2O_3$. The oxide layers were thin and compact so as to make CrAlN films more protective than CrN films. In case of CrZrN films, Zr atoms were dissolved in the CrN phase. Zr atoms advantageously refined the columnar structure, reduced the surface roughness, and increased the micro-hardness. However, the addition of Zr did not increased oxidation resistance, mainly because Zr was not a protective element. All the deposited films displayed relatively good oxidation resistance, owing to the formation of the highly protective $Cr_2O_3$ on their surface. The $Cr_{40}Zr_9N$ and $Cr_{31}Zr_{16}N$ films oxidized to $Cr_2O_3$ as the major phase and ${\alpha}-ZrO_2$ as the minor one, whereas the CrN film oxidized to $Cr_2O_3$.

  • Cr-N films were deposited on low-carbon steel sheets by the reactive arc-induced ion plating (AIIP). The influence of the deposition conditions (nitrogen pressure and substrate bias voltage) on the crystal orientation, morphology and microhardness of the Cr-N films has been investigated using x-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscope. The impurities and contaminations on the surface and at the interface, and the layer-by-layer compositions of the film have been analyzed using scanning Auger multiprobe (SAM) and glow discharge spectroscope (GDS). The mixed state of Cr and Cr2N turned out to have a fine fibrous structure. The Cr2N films were deposited at a wide range of nitrogen flow rates. The orientations of Cr2N films were mainly (110) and (111), and the intensity of the (111) peak increased as the substrate bias voltage increased. The micorstructure of the Cr2N film was dense and no columnar structure was observed. The films in the mixed state of Cr2N and CrN were also dense without columnar structure. The maximum microhardness of the Cr-N films was 2400 kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$ at 10gf load.

  • Interaction between human osteoblast (hFOB 1.19) and CrN films was conducted in vitro. CrN films were produced by cathodic arc plasma deposition. The surface was characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM). CrN films, glass substrates and TiN films were cultured with human osteoblasts for 48 and 72 hours. Actin stress fiber patterns and cell adhesion of osteoblasts were found less organized and weak on CrN films compared to those on the glass substrates and the TiN films. Human osteoblasts also showed less proliferation and less distributed microtubule on CrN films compared to those on glass substrates and TiN films. Focal contact adhesion was not observed in the cells cultured on CrN films, whereas focal contact adhesion was observed well in the cells cultured on glass substrates and TiN films. As a result, the CrN film is a potential candidate as a surface coating to be used for implantable devices which requires minimal cellular adhesion.

  • The thin films of TiN have been used extensively as wear-resistant materials, for instance, such as tools of high-speed cutting, metal mold forming etc. In these days, because the thin films capable of being used more severe conditions are needed, the technologies of arc ion plating are tried to improve its characteristics. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of thin films of (Ti,Cr)N compared with those of TiN. The method of arc ion plating, which is known as showing good tight-adherence and productivity, was used. After manufacturing thin films of ($Ti_{1-x}Cr_{x}$)N (x=0~1) with change of Cr in (Ti,Cr) target, atomic concentration, structure, size of crystallite, residual stress and surface roughness of thin films on substrate were investigated. As the results, it was confirmed that Cr atomic concentrations of thin films were proportionally changed with Cr atomic concentrations of target, and thin films of ($Ti_{1-x}Cr_{x}$)N (x=0~1) showed NaCl type and CrN existed as solid solution to TiN.

  • Nanocrystalline CrN films were deposited on Si (100) substrates by means of asymmetric pulsed DC reactive magnetron sputtering. We investigated the growth behavior, corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of CrN films with a change in the duty cycle and pulse frequency. The grain size of the CrN films decreased from 25.4 nm to 11.2 nm upon a decrease in the duty cycle. The corrosion potentials for the CrN films by DC sputtering was approximately - 0.6 V, and it increased to - 0.3 V in the CrN films which underwent pulsed sputtering. The nanoindentation hardness of the CrN films also increased with a decrease in the duty cycle. This enhancement of the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of pulsed sputtered CrN films could be attributed to the densification and surface smoothness of the microstructure of the films.

  • CrN films were deposited onto STD61 steel substrates using an arc-ion plating apparatus, with and without ion-nitriding pretreatment, and their oxidation was studied between 700 and $900^{\circ}C$ for 40hr in air. The oxidation behavior was examined by thermogravimetric analyses, X-ray diffraction. EDS and SEM. The deposited CrN films consisted of CrN and $Cr_2$N phases. The CrN films increased the oxidation resistance of the substrate by forming a protective $Cr_2$$O_3$ layer. The ion-nitriding pretreatment has not affected the oxidation resistance of the CrN film.

  • In this paper, we compared the properties of the chromium nitride (CrN) films prepared by inductively coupled plasma magnetron sputtering (ICPMS). As a comparison, CrN film prepared by a direct current magnetron sputtering (dcMS) is also studied. The crystal structure, surface and cross-sectional microstructure and composite properties of the as-deposited CrN films are compared by x-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, nanoindentation tester and corrosion resistance tester, respectively. It is found that the as-deposited CrN films by ICPMS grew preferentially on (200) plane when compared with that by dcMS on (111) plane. As a result, the films deposited by ICPMS have a very compact microstructure with high hardness: the nanoindentation hardness reached 19.8 GPa and 13.5 GPa by dcMS, respectively. Besides, the residual stress of CrN films prepared by ICPMS is also relatively large. After measuring the corrosion resistance, the corrosion current of films prepared by ICPMS was three order of magnitude smaller than that of CrN films deposited by dcMS.

  • TiN and CrN thin films are among the most used coatings in machine and tool steels. TiN and CrN are deposited by arc ion plating(AIP) method. The AIP method inhibits the reaction by depositing a hard, protective coating on the material surface. In this study, the characteristics of multi-layer(TiN/CrN/TiN(TCT), CrN/TiN/CrN(CTC)) are investigated. For comparison, TiN with the same thickness as the multilayer is formed as a single layer and analyzed. Thin films formed as multilayers are well stacked. The characteristics of micro hardness and corrosion resistance are better than those of single layer TiN. The TiN/CrN peak is confirmed because both TCT and CTC are formed of the same component(TiN, CrN), and the phase is first grown in the (111) direction, which is the growth direction. However, the adhesion and abrasion resistance of the multilayer films are somewhat lower.

  • The Cr-Zr-N films have much improved mechanical properties and very smooth surface roughness. However, in spite of their outstanding properties, the Cr-Zr-N coatings revealed their mechanical properties deteriorated severely with increasing Zr content at $500^{\circ}C$ ecause of very rapid oxidation. Recently oxynitride films have been widely studied due to their excellent unique mechanical properties and oxidation resistance. In this work, CrZr-O-N films with various O contents were synthesized by unbalanced magnetron sputtering with Cr-Zr segment targets (Cr:Zr volume ratios is 1:1) and all films were prepared in a nitrogen rich mixture of N2 and O2. Characteristics such as crystalline structure, hardness and chemical composition as a function of the O content were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), microhardness testing system and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Results showed that the thin films had dense and compact microstructure as O content in the films increases. The microstructure of the thin films consisted of mainly crystalline Cr (Zr)N phase and Cr2O3 phase. The maximum hardness and elastic modulus of the films was measured to be approximately 33.2 GPa and 280.6 GPa from the films with low content of O elements. Detailed experimental results will be presented.
