Strategies for Successfully Completing Online Professional Development

  • Recently, increasing demand for teacher professional development and significant advances in information and communication technologies has led to a proliferation of online professional development. In spite of online professional development's popularity and advantages, research indicates that there is a concern of considerably high dropout rates of online learners. Therefore, to reduce the dropout rates of the learners, this paper is designed to help teachers identify professional development opportunities that are tailored to their needs as well as successfully complete these learning experiences. To achieve the purpose of the study, the paper explores the considerations for evaluating the characteristics of online learners and online professional development. Using these evaluations, this paper provides practical strategies for helping elementary and secondary education teachers successfully complete online professional development without dropping out an online course.

Institutional Repositories in BRICS Countries: A Study

  • An institutional repository includes digital assets generated by academics, such as administrative documents, course notes, learning objects, or conference proceedings. It will provide a window that gives open access to improve the sponsoring institution's visibility and status. This paper discusses the growth and development of Institutional Repositories available in BRICS Countries. The relevant data was collected from the directory of OpenDOAR. Based on the data in OpenDOAR, 242 repositories are represented from BRICS countries. Among the 242, 84 (34.71%) repositories are from Brazil, 39 (16.12%) from China, 68 (28.10%) repositories from India, 22 (9.109%) repositories from Russia, and 29(11.98%) repositories from South Africa. Brazil has the largest number of records (11, 17,688) among BRICS Countries repositories.

A Study on Evaluating Learning Effects Based on Analysis of Satisfaction in E-learning

  • This study examined student satisfaction with e-learning experiences in order to determine which factors had the greatest impact on reports of satisfaction among students at Konkuk University. We surveyed 4,889 students enrolled in e-learning courses and analyzed 830 completed questionnaires to identify factors that influence student satisfaction with e-learning. Results showed significant correlations between system factors and satisfaction ($R^2=0.577$; p = 0.000). The system factor with the greatest impact on satisfaction was course attendance rate (0.224; p = 0.000).

  • The effects of $La_2O_3$on the microstructure and electrical characteristics of Pr-based ZnO varistors were investigated. The average grain size increased in the range of 21.9~56.3$\mu$ m with increasing $La_2O_3$additive content(0.0~2.0 mol%). La was, of course grain boundary, largely segregated at the nodal point. As $La_2O_3$additive content increases, threshold voltage and nonlinear coefficient decreased and leakage current increased. In particular, 2.0 mol% $La_2O_3$-added varistor exhibited low threshold voltage 17.0V/mm and nonlinear coefficient of about 6. Based on these results, this varistor can be said to be used as low-voltage varistor, if nonlinear coefficient is somewhat improved forward.

  • An experiment was conducted to observe the 5% CCFZ solution penetration depth through ray parenchyma and ray tracheid of Larix kapempferi. Moisture content was adjusted 28% for both sapwood and heartwood. Even though the moisture content was same, heartwood was 1.3 times less permeable than sapwood and the difference was found statistically significant. Due to anatomical differences between ray parenchyma and ray tracheid, ray parenchyma was about 1.3 times more permeable than ray tracheid. Penetration speed was high initially and it decreased rapidly in course of time.

  • This experiment was carried out to study an effect of organic fertilizer, IBDU complex and humate on the growth of creeping bentgrass(penncross) and the change of soil chemical characteristics. Results obtained are summarized as follows :1.Content of a total nitrogen in soil was increased in more IBDU complex and organic fertilizer than humate plot. 2.Content of a organic matter in soil was increased in organic fertiliter and humate plot. 3.CEC in soil was improved a little in humate-granular plot. 4.The yield of dry weight and leaf color 'was increased in more organic fertilizer than humate plot. 5.Root length was the most effective in humate plot.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine what effect reflection on clinical practice experience had students as learners and care providers. Qualitative research method was used to study a group of four-year undergraduate nursing course. Content analysis was done using the classification method of Carper's four patterns of knowing. Results of the study indicated that the use of the reflective process of clinical debriefing and journaling was impact on the aspect of nursing science, moral component of knowledge in nursing, personal knowing in nursing and the art of nursing. Especially, students moved from a passive to a more active mode of learning. The most significant finding was that over time, reflective processes resulted in the emergence of the client as the central focus of care. It was suggested that reflection was an important learning tool in professional education and that the skills required for reflection need to be developed in professional courses.

  • The data for the present paper was a part of a large research project conducted to assess preservice teachers' knowledge related to fractions and place value at a southwestern public university in 2007. The study utilized convenience sampling, consisting of 150 elementary preservice teachers who were enrolled in a mathematics methods course before their student teaching. The results demonstrated preservice teachers' knowledge of teaching comparison, addition, subtraction, and multiplication of fractions was insufficient even though these should be basic knowledge. Teacher preparation programs should emphasize profound knowledge for teaching fractions using representations.

  • This paper focuses on development of a fashion design education course that will foster the talent and aesthetic consciousness of fashion design student. The writer reached the content of the designing ideas to practical applications as the defined scope of fashion design education. For designing idea in practical application : matching ideas, contrasting ideas, formative combinations and revisionism were used. For design ideas, the ideas developed by 飯塚弘子, 万江入重子, 香川達子 were used in revision. To detail the content of design education, fashion magazines, portfolios, photographs and related fashion design educational materials were used. 1. Matching ideas : it proposes such identical expression into costume by making a research of developing material, application form and color extraction from design sources. 2. Contrasting ideas : it proposes such opposite expression into costume by making a research of opposite to image, form, position and purpose from some object. 3. Formative combinations : it proposes such new expression into costume by combining a detail of costume with the other object. 4. Revisionism : it proposes such modified expression into costume by making a research of deletion, change, addition and conversion in costume.

The Effect of Polyamines on the DNase Activity in Cultured Carrot Cells (당근(Daucus carota L.)배양세포의 DNase활성에 미치는 Polyamines의 영향)

  • The present study was attempted to investigate the effects of polyamines such as putrescine, spermidine and spermine on protein content and DNase activity in vivo and in vitro in carrot embryos. It was also investigated whether polyamines could replace role of cations required for DNase activity in vitro. The results obtained are as follows. Putrescine, spermidine and spermine increased protein content, although response to spermine reached plateau at the concentration of 0.1 mM. DNase activity was inhibited by polyamines, the inhibition being concentration-dependent and the highest att he concentration of 10 mM. The inhibition of DNase activity was the most prominent with spermine. Similar inhibitory effect to polyamines which was concentration-dependent was found in DNase activity but no change was shown on time-course in vitro. Putrescine and spermidine enhanced the DNase activity at low Mg2+ and Mn2+ concentrations, suggesting that the role of Mg2+ and Mn2+ for DNase activity could be, in part, replaced by these polyamines. These results, therefore, suggest that plyamines can modulate DNase activity through binding to DNA rather than direct effect on DNase activity.
