A Study on Application of Korean Medical Prescriptions Theory in Developing Transdermal Medicine and Korean Medical Cosmetic Preparation Using Oral Herbal Medicine (경구 처방의 경피용 제제 및 한방 화장품 소재 개발 시의 방제이론 적용에 관한 연구)

  • Objectives To identify whether Sovereign-Minister-Assistant-Courier (君臣佐使) Theory and Meridian Tropism (歸經) Theory of oral herbal medicine can be applied to trans-dermal medicine and whether pharmaceutical efficacy can be delivered to skin by Courier herb (使藥). Methods We reviewed previous studies related to Sovereign-Minister-Assistant-Courier Theory. And we examined whether prescription compositions based on Sovereign-Minister-Assistant-Courier Theory correspond with efficacy results of trans-dermal medicine experimentally identified. Results When Sovereign-Minister-Assistant-Courier Theory is applied to trans-dermal medicine, Courier herb act as delivering the effective components to the lesion penetrating skin barrier. And we identified that medicine absorbed through the digestive processes may not correspond with Courier herb applied topically. Conclusions We identified that Courier herb act as delivering the effective components to the lesion. But to strength evidences, additional studies on this action will be needed.

Herbal Extracts Classification and Application in Terms of Sasang Constitution (한방보험제제의 사상의학적 분류 및 운용)

  • 1. Objectives Herbal Extracts are used in Korean Oriental Medicine clinics. The sixty eight kinds of single herbal extracts and fifty six kinds of mixed herbal extracts has been using since the first year of execution of Korean medicine national insurance policy in 1987. This paper was performed to make a guideline of using herbal extracts. Single herbal extracts and mixed herbal extracts were discussed and classified according to Sasang constition. 2. Methods The sixty eight single herbal extracts were classified into four categories according to Sasang Constitution and fifty six mixed herbal extracts were classified by six Korean oriental medical doctors. Mixed herbal extracts were considered in terms of drug roles[sovereign, minister, assistant and courier(君臣佐使)] or most included ingredient herb. 3. Results Sasang constitutions which were suitable for fifty six mixed herbal extracts were Soeumin(46.4%), mixed constitution(39.2%) and Soyangin(8.9%), Taeeumin(5.3%). Sasang constitutions which were suitable for sixty eight single herbal extracts were Soeumin(47.1%), Soyangin(32.4%) and Taeeumin(20.6%). 4. Conclusions The rate of Soeumin herbal extracts was the most highest among all constitutions. It is regarded that warming and enforcing herb medicine were most used in all prescriptions.

Implication of Korean Medicine Principles in Herbal Medicinal Preparations on Pharmaceutical Affairs Act (약사법상 한약제제의 정의 중 한방원리의 의미에 대한 고찰)

  • Objectives : In Pharmaceutical Affairs Act, herbal medicinal preparations are defined as medicines made by Korean medicine principles. But in Act, Korean medicine principles are vague. Thus, there is a request to explain what the Korean medicine principles are. The aim of this study is to suggest implications of Korean medicine principles in definition of herbal medicinal preparations. Methods : With regard for definition of Korean medicine principles, we referred to the domestic and foreign regulations and literature about the history of herbal medicinal preparations. As a result, the meaning of Korean medicine principles was historically examined from various angles. Results : Through this study, we studied the Korean medicine principles from the past medical history. Due to the broad definition of Korean medicinal principles, we tried to extract general ideas of medicine principles first. We also found that we had scientific formulations based on korean medicine principles which could be used in modern society. In the end, we found that numerous medicine principles which include ‘Four qi and five flavors theory’, ‘Processing of medicinals’, ‘Yin and yang theory’, ‘Five phases theory’, ‘Meridian entry of viscera and bowels theory’, ‘Herb Couplet Interaction theory’, ‘Sovereign, minister, assistant and courier theory’, etc. Conclusions : Innumerable principles used from the past existed. These principles were broad and could be used as modern scientific principles. Based on these facts, we illustrated details of Korean medicine principles, hope this principles be widely shared and Korean herbal medicinal preparations be further developed.

The Daily Dose of Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata and Aconiti Lateralis Radix in Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases (傷寒論에서 炮附子와 生附子의 1 일 복용량)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was finding out the daily dose of Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata and Aconiti Lateralis Radix in Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases.Methods : In order to estimate the daily dose of Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata and Aconiti Lateralis Radix, I researched Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases, Synopsis of Prescription of the Golden Chamber, Korean Pharmacoepia 10 and Science of Contemporary Chinese Medicine Product.Results : Daily doses of Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata are 1, 2, or 3 pieces and those amount are respectively 1, 2, or 3 Ryang. Common dose of Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata is 1 piece, Maximum Dose of it is 3 Pieces and that corresponds with dose of dried herb in Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases. Consider from Sovereign, Minister, Assistant and Courier, the dose of it in Buja-tang and Whyunmu-tang is 3 Ryang. 1 Ryang corresponds with 6.5 g. Aconiti Lateralis Radix is dried without baking so its weight is equal to Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata. Daily doses of Aconiti Lateralis Radix are 1 piece or 1 big piece and those amount are respectively 3 or 6 Ryang. Common dose of it is 1 piece.Conclusions : From this study, in Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases, Daily Doses of Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata are 1, 2, or 3 pieces(19.5 g, 39 g or 52 g), and that of Aconiti Lateralis Radix are 1 piece or 1 big piece(19.5 g, 39 g). Common Dose of two Herbal Medicine is 19.5 g.
