  • Wireless power transfer (WPT) is the technology that enables the power to transmit electromagnetic field to an electrical load without the use of wires. There are two kinds of magnetic resonant coupling and inductive coupling ways transmitting from the source to the output load. Compared with microwave method for energy transfer over a long distance, the magnetic resonance method has the advantages of reducing the barrier of electromagnetic wave and enhancing the efficiency of power transmission. In this paper, the wireless power transfer circuit having a resonant frequency of 13.45 MHz for the low power system is studied, and the hardware implementation is accomplished to measure the power transmission efficiency for the distance between the transmitter and the receiver.

  • Optical structures of a tapered ultra-thin light guide film (LGF) were optimized by optical simulation for increasing coupling efficiency between light sources and the LGF. A serration pattern on the entrance side surface could provide a comparable coupling efficiency to that of the conventional LGF where a linear, asymmetric prism array was formed on the taper surface. Several micro-patterns were applied to the top and/or bottom surface of the LGF for achieving better luminance property, and it was found that an optimized micro-pyramid pattern exhibited the highest average luminance together with satisfactory luminance uniformity.

  • In the fiber-photodiode(PD) coupling module using v-groove, the paraxial approximation is no longer valid because the beam enters obliquely the PD substrate with the angle of $20^{\circ}$ after being reflected from the $55^{\circ}$ mirror formed by anisotropically etching of the (100) silicon wafer. In this paper, we study the beam profile incident on the PD active area and fiber-PD coupling efficiency for this case.

  • UV molding is a process for integrating micro/nano polymeric optical components on optoelectronic modules. In the present study, a microlens array for vertical cavity surface emitting laser(VCSEL) to fiber coupling was designed, integrated and tested. At the design stage, design variables ware optimized to maximize the coupling efficiency, and tolerance analysis was carried out. At the integration stage, the UV transparent mold was fabricated and the microlens array on VCSEL array was integrated by UV molding process. Finally the coupling efficiency of VCSEL to fiber was measured and analyzed.

  • The purpose of this research is to construct the experimental test set-ups and establish a series of performance test program for the domestically developed fluid couplings, and to provide a software to store and utilize these experimental data which can be used to improve the performance of the fluid coupling and solve on the job problems confronted in operation. The performance test consists of taking measurement of torque rpm and efficiency of the fluid coupling for three different amount of working fluid inside with various loads to the output shaft and finally investigating the torque rpm and efficiency characteristics of the fluid coupling with respect to these parameters. The results of this study can contribute valuable references tot the development of variable speed fluid coupling and torque converter currently pursued by the domestic industry.

  • This article presents an investigation of the effects on a grounding system of wireless power transfer (WPT) when transmitting over relatively far distances, that is, up to 1.25 m. Conventional two-coil WPT systems are sufficiently commercialized in strong coupling range, but it is important to accomplish the long-range WPT in weak coupling range for further various applications. This system depends on the coupling effect between the two coils that the grounds of the transmitting and receiving coils should be completely separated. However, when evaluating the performance of two-coil systems with the instrument consisting of two ports and one common ground, undesirable problems occur in weak coupling ranges, for example, obtaining disagreeable transmission efficiency and degrading system stability/reliability. We investigate the problems of the leakage power from common ground systems and provide a practical solution to obtain a reliable WPT system by using an isolation transformer. The usefulness of this approach is that it is possible to achieve the stability of the system with relatively far transmitting distances and to determine the exact transmission efficiency.

  • In this paper, a novel architecture for device miniaturization of multimode interference-based couplers (MMICs) is proposed by replacing conventionally designed MMICs by cascaded two-section stepped-width or stepped-index MMICs. For the 82% cross coupling efficiency in a stepped-width MMIC, the coupling length of device results in just 6.7% length reduction. However, for a stepped-width and stepped-index MMIC, the coupling efficiency increases to 93% and the length reduction of 9% occurs. Furthermore, with additional incorporation of tapered devices, it shows that a compact MMIC can be designed in which the coupling efficiency is 90% and the length is reduced to 25%.

  • A new fiber coupling scheme using thermally over-expanded core(TOEC) fiber was proposed and demonstrated. In the coupling experiment between 1.3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ FP-LD and the proposed TOEC fiber with a tapered hemispherical microlens. superior performances such as a long working distance, a high coupling efficiency, and large misalignment tolerances were verified experimentally.

  • Wireless power transmission (WPT) is useful technology in near future. There are some kinds of the WPT technologies, WPT via radio waves, resonance coupling, and inductive. Especially the WPT via radio waves is used for multi-purposes from short range to long range application. However, unfortunately it is misunderstood that it is low efficiency and low power. In this paper, I show the theory of beam efficiency between transmitting antennas and receiving antennas and also show some high efficient applications of the WPT via radio waves. Especially, I pick up a wireless power charging system of an electric vehicle and show the experimental results. I show difference between the theory of beam efficiency and the experimental results of short range WPT. I indicate that reasons of poor beam efficiency in the experiment are (1) change of impedance caused by mutual coupling between transmitting antennas and receiving antennas, (2) oblique direction of microwave power to receiving antennas caused by short distance.
