Thermal diffusion and diffusion thermo effects on an unsteady heat and mass transfer magnetohydrodynamic natural convection Couette flow using FEM

  • The numerical solutions of unsteady hydromagnetic natural convection Couette flow of a viscous, incompressible and electrically conducting fluid between the two vertical parallel plates in the presence of thermal radiation, thermal diffusion and diffusion thermo are obtained here. The fundamental dimensionless governing coupled linear partial differential equations for impulsive movement and uniformly accelerated movement of the plate were solved by an efficient Finite Element Method. Computations were performed for a wide range of the governing flow parameters, viz., Thermal diffusion (Soret) and Diffusion thermo (Dufour) parameters, Magnetic field parameter, Prandtl number, Thermal radiation and Schmidt number. The effects of these flow parameters on the velocity (u), temperature (${\theta}$) and Concentration (${\phi}$) are shown graphically. Also the effects of these pertinent parameters on the skin-friction, the rate of heat and mass transfer are obtained and discussed numerically through tabular forms. These are in good agreement with earlier reported studies. Analysis indicates that the fluid velocity is an increasing function of Grashof numbers for heat and mass transfer, Soret and Dufour numbers whereas the Magnetic parameter, Thermal radiation parameter, Prandtl number and Schmidt number lead to reduction of the velocity profiles. Also, it is noticed that the rate of heat transfer coefficient and temperature profiles increase with decrease in the thermal radiation parameter and Prandtl number, whereas the reverse effect is observed with increase of Dufour number. Further, the concentration profiles increase with increase in the Soret number whereas reverse effect is seen by increasing the values of the Schmidt number.

  • 본 논문에서는 18절점 가정 변형률 솔리드 요소를 이용하여, 기계적 물리량과 전기적 물리량이 완전히 연성된 정적 문제를 해석할 수 있는 유한요소 정식화 과정을 유도하였다. 요소 결점의 축방향 변위 자유도 외에 전기 자유도를 추가하여 주어진 변위와 하중에 의해 발생하는 유도전압을 계산할 수 있다. 또한 가정 변형률 요소를 사용함으로써 박판형 구조물을 모델할 때 발생할 수 있는 잠김현상을 해소하였다. 유도된 유한요소 정식을 바탕으로 프로그램을 작성하였으며, 몇가지 수치예제에 적용하여 작성된 코드를 검증하였다. 본 요소를 이용하여, 여러 가지 변수가 THUNDER의 작동변위에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 이를 통하여, 특정한 재료와 곡률을 갖출 경우 THUNDER의 작동성능이 향상됨을 확인하였다.

Polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes loaded with silver nitrate for bacteria removal

  • PES UF membranes containing silver were prepared to impart antibacterial properties for waste water treatment. Asymmetric membranes for antibacterial application were prepared from polyethersulfone (PES) and silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$) (PES/$AgNO_3$=15/2 by weight) solution in N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) via simple wet phase inversion technique. These membranes were characterized by polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) of different molecular weights (1000 ppm in water) at room temperature and on operating pressure of 5 bars. It was observed that the water flux of PES-$AgNO_3$ membrane is slightly lower than virgin PES but still increased linearly with the increment of pressure applied. The morphology of the resulting membranes was examined using Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) coupled with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). Elemental analysis using EDS proved that silver is successfully loaded on the membrane surfaces. Due to the success of loading silver on membrane surfaces, antibacterial activities were evaluated via agar diffusion method against Escherichia coli (E.coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus) culture. By incorporating 2 wt% of silver nitrate, PES-$AgNO_3$ showed significant inhibition ring on both E.coli and S.aureus. Filtration of E.coli solution (OD 0.31) showed satisfactory rejection data with ~100% inhibition growth after 24 hours incubation at $37^{\circ}C$. Resultant membranes also exhibit better tensile strength (compared to virgin PES) up to 71% may be due to the suggested interactions. The residual silver during fabrication was measured using ICP-MS and result showed that the residual silver content of PES-$AgNO_3$ membrane was only ~1% of the original silver added in the polymer solution. These studies have shown that PES-$AgNO_3$ UF membranes are potential in improving the filtration in water treatment.

  • 면내 하중을 지지하는 면재와 면외 하중을 지지하는 심재로 구성되는 샌드위치 패널 구조물은 높은 비강도와 비강성을 가지므로 경량화가 요구되는 대형 구조물에 자주 이용된다. 그러나, 이러한 구조물은 필연적으로 높은 하중에 대하여 유연성의 증가를 일으키게 되므로, 이에 대한 구조 안전성 분석이 이루어져야 한다. 이에 대해 실제 풍하중은 거스트 영향 등을 비롯한 비선형성을 가지는 요소들이 고려되어야 하며, 구조물의 안전성 분석을 위하여 입력 하중에 대해 보다 실제 물리현상에 근접하게 모사되어야 한다. 이에 이 연구에서는 유체-구조 연성해석 기법을 이용하여 대형 등격자-보강 패널 구조물에 대한 구조 안전성 분석이 수행되었다. 입력하중인 풍하중에 대하여 보다 실제적 모사를 위해 불규칙 변동 속도성분인 거스트 영향이 고려된 랜덤분포 풍하중에 대한 유동장을 생성하여 압력-변위 사상을 통하여 연성해석이 수행되었다.

Quantification of Total Mercury in Antarctic Surface Snow using ICP-SF-MS: Spatial Variation from the Coast to Dome Fuji

  • The total mercury concentration ($Hg_T$) of surface snow samples collected along a ~1500 km transect in east Queen Maud Land was determined using inductively coupled plasma sector field mass spectrometry to address the behavior of Hg on the Antarctic Plateau. Due to the volatile nature of mercury, measures were taken against Hg loss from standard solutions by choosing appropriate container material and stabilizing agents. Glass bottles with Teflon-lined caps were superior to Teflon and polyethylene containers in protecting against Hg loss, but addition of gold chloride ($AuCl_3$) or bromine chloride (BrCl) was necessary to ensure preservation of Hg. As Hg loss was also observed in snowmelt samples, our analysis may underestimate the actual amount of HgT in the snow. Even so, the measured HgT was still very low (< 0.4-10.8 pg $g^{-1}$, n = 44) without a signal of depositional enhancement accompanying photo-oxidation of atmospheric elemental mercury in austral midsummer. Moreover, the dynamic variation along the traverse implies spatial and temporal heterogeneity in its source processes.

  • 균열, 누수, 박락, 철근노출, 부식, 탄산화 등은 터널 라이닝 건전도 평가항목으로 그 중에서 균열은 주요한 영향요인이다. 1980년 이후로, NATM은 터널의 굴착방법과 링폐합의 지반공학적 개념의 보급과 함께 넓게 적용되었으며, 라이닝에 발생된 균열의 연구도 진행되었으나 종균열에 제한된 연구가 주로 수행되었다. 본 논문에서는 11개의 공용중인 NATM터널의 정밀안전진단 결과를 활용하여 공간적인 위치 및 형태별로 분석하여 터널별 공통된 7개의 균열을 정의, 원인 및 분석, 사례 등을 나타내었다. 종류별 균열은 CCD스캐너 이미지를 3차원으로 분석하여 향후 NATM터널 정기점검 및 정밀안전진단 시 유익한 사례가 휠 수 있도록 하였다.

Residues Analysis of Acetamiprid, Boscalid, Imidacloprid and Pyraclostrobin in the Minor Crop Mustard Green under Greenhouse Conditions for Evaluation of their Potentiality of PLS Violation

  • BACKGROUND: The demand for pesticide registration has kept increasing for minor crop cultivation in greenhouse since Positive List System (PLS) has been launched. Thus, much study on the evaluation of pesticide residues in minor crops is required to examine the demand. In this study, we evaluated residues of acetamiprid, boscalid, imidacloprid and pyraclostrobin in the minor crop mustard green to provide the potential data for their registration. METHODS AND RESULTS: Pesticide granule formulations of acetamiprid, boscalid, imidacloprid and pyraclostrobin were incorporated into soil and applied onto field soil surface at rates of 3 kg/10a, 6 kg/10a, 3 kg/10a and 6 kg/10a, respectively. The pesticides were also applied at the two times higher than the rates to compare the residues between the application rates. Mustard green seeds were sown 1 day after pesticide application and cultivated under greenhouse conditions. LC/MS/MS analyses coupled with a modified QuEChERs method were employed for determination of the pesticides in plant samples. The method limits of quantitation (LOQ) of the pesticides were 0.01 mg/kg, and the matrix calibration curves of the pesticides showed linearity with coefficient values of determination (r2) greater than 0.995. The average recovery values of the pesticides fortified in control samples at rates of LOQ and 10LOQ ranged from approximately 77.5% to 101.2% with relative standard deviation values lower than 14%. The pesticides in the mustard green samples cultivated for 53 days after sown were determined to be lower than the LOQ level. CONCLUSION: Acetamiprid, boscalid, imidacloprid and pyraclostrobin were found at a level lower than 0.01 mg/kg in the minor crop mustard green. Thus, their residues in mustard green would not violate PLS under greenhouse conditions.

장축 실린더의 열변형 최소화를 위한 차열관 효과 해석 및 실험 연구 (An Analytical and Experimental Study on the Thermal Shroud Effect to Minimize Thermal Deformation of a High L/D Ratio Cylinder)

  • A barrel is a high length-to-diameter ratio cylinder that is influenced by environmental factors such as sunlight, precipitation, wind and clouds. Cross-barrel temperature differences caused by uneven heating or cooling lead to thermal deformation that degrades accuracy. Therefore, a barrel is covered by thermal shrouds to minimize the type of thermal deformation, "fall-of-shot". In this paper, an analytical and experimental study is presented to design the thermal shrouds for a gun barrel and to evaluate the thermal shroud effect. First, an analytical study on the thermal shroud effect to minimize thermal deformation of a gun barrel by sunlight and wind is performed. The coupled analysis of thermal fluid dynamics of the air flow between a barrel and thermal shrouds and thermal stresses of a barrel Is performed to clarify both the thermal shroud effect and the drift in gun muzzle orientation by thermal deformation. Second, experiments are carried out to test and evaluate the thermal shroud effect on the performance of a gun barrel. The drift in gun muzzle orientation against the solar radiation is confirmed by the experiments, and the results well agree with the analytical estimation. Third, three principal design factors that are presumed to have an effect on the performance of the thermal shrouds are also analyzed; sorts of shroud materials, wall-thickness of thermal shrouds, and distance of the gap between a barrel and thermal shrouds.

주간 활용 별센서의 별 감지가능성 분석 (Star Detectability Analysis of Daytime Star Sensor)

  • 이 논문에서는 주간 항법용 별센서의 실제 활용을 목적으로 주간 대기 조건과 주간 별 감지 가능성을 논한다. 주간동안의 대기 자료를 구하기 위해 표준 대기 모델(LOWTRAN 7)을 사용했으며 그 모델로부터 배경하늘에 대한 복사와 대기투과도를 구하였다. 대기 복사량을 감소시키기 위해 광학 필터를 장착한 별센서를 가정했으며 태양 복사 효과를 나타내기 위해 별센서와 태양 사이의 다양한 분리각을 설정하였다. 별센서의 FOV에 대한 고려로서, 하늘 배경 복사의 변화와 감지가능한 별의 개수 밀도를 분석하였다. 또한 요구되는 신호 대 잡음비를 얻기 위한 노출시간과 별센서의 주간 활용 한계로서 작용하는 CCD의 복사에 의한 전자 수를 계산하였다.

Compact 1×2 and 2×2 Dual Polarized Series-Fed Antenna Array for X-Band Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar Applications

  • In this paper, compact linear dual polarized series-fed $1{\times}2$ linear and $2{\times}2$ planar arrays antennas for airborne SAR applications are proposed. The proposed antenna design consists of a square radiating patch that is placed on top of the substrate, a quarter wave transformer and $50-{\Omega}$ matched transformer. Matching between a radiating patch and the $50-{\Omega}$ microstrip line is accomplished through a direct coupled-feed technique with the help of an impedance inverter (${\lambda}/4$ impedance transformer) placed at both horizontal and vertical planes, in the case of the $2{\times}2$ planar array. The overall size for the prototype-1 and prototype-2 fabricated antennas are $1.9305{\times}0.9652{\times}0.05106{{\lambda}_0}^3$ and $1.9305{\times}1.9305{\times}0.05106{{\lambda}_0}^3$, respectively. The fabricated structure has been tested, and the experimental results are similar to the simulated ones. The CST MWS simulated and vector network analyzer measured reflection coefficient ($S_{11}$) results were compared, and they indicate that the proposed antenna prototype-1 yields the impedance bandwidth >140 MHz (9.56-9.72 GHz) defined by $S_{11}$<-10 dB with 1.43%, and $S_{21}$<-25 dB in the case of prototype-2 (9.58-9.74 GHz, $S_{11}$< -10 dB) >140 MHz for all the individual ports. The surface currents and the E- and H-field distributions were studied for a better understanding of the polarization mechanism. The measured results of the proposed dual polarized antenna were in accordance with the simulated analysis and showed good performance of the S-parameters and radiation patterns (co-pol and cross-pol), gain, efficiency, front-to-back ratio, half-power beam width) at the resonant frequency. With these features and its compact size, the proposed antenna will be suitable for X-band airborne synthetic aperture radar applications.
