  • Numerical simulation on marine wind and sea surface elevation was carried out using both three-dimensional hydrostatic and non-hydrostatic models and a simple oceanic model from 0900 LST, August 13 to 0900 LST, August 15, 1995. As daytime easterly meso-scale sea-breeze from the eastern sea penetrates Kangnung city in the center part as basin and goes up along the slope of Mt. Taegullyang in the west, it confronts synoptic-scale westerly wind blowing over the top of the mountain at the mid of the eastern slope and then the resultant wind produces an upper level westerly return flow toward the East Sea. In a narrow band of weak surface wind within 10km of the coastal sea, wind stress is generally small, less than l${\times}$10E-2 Pa and it reaches 2 ${\times}$ 10E-2 Pa to the 35 km. Positive wind stress curl of 15 $\times$ 10E-5Pa $m^{-1}$ still exists in the same band and corresponds to the ascent of 70 em from the sea level. This is due to the generation of northerly wind driven current with a speed of 11 m $S^{-1}$ along the coast under the influence of south-easterly wind and makes an intrusion of warm waters from the southern sea into the northern coast, such as the East Korea Warm Current. On the other hand, even if nighttime downslope windstorm of 14m/s associated with both mountain wind and land-breeze produces the development of internal gravity waves with a hydraulic jump motion of air near the coastal inland surface, the surface wind in the coastal sea is relatively moderate south-westerly wind, resulting in moderate wind stress. Negative wind stress curl in the coast causes the subsidence of the sea surface of 15 em along the coast and south-westerly coastal surface wind drives alongshore south-easterly wind driven current, opposite to the daytime one. Then, it causes the intrusion of cold waters like the North Korea Cold Current in the northern coastal sea into the narrow band of the southern coastal sea. However, the band of positive wind stress curl at the distance of 30km away from the coast toward further offshore area can also cause the uprising of sea waters and the intrusion of warm waters from the southern sea toward the northern sea (northerly wind driven current), resulting in a counter-clockwise wind driven current. These clockwise and counter-clockwise currents much induce the formation of low clouds containing fog and drizzle in the coastal region.

  • The gas-liquid counter-current flow limitation (CCFL) is closely related to efficient and safety operation of many equipment in industrial cycle. Air-water countercurrent flow experiments were performed in a tube with diameter of 25 mm to understand the triggering mechanism of CCFL. A parallel electrode probe was utilized to measure film thickness whereby the time domain and frequency domain characteristics of liquid film was obtained. The amplitude of the interface wave is small at low liquid flow rate while it becomes large at high liquid flow rate after being disturbed by the airflow. The spectral characteristic curve shows a peak-shaped distribution. The crest exists between 0 and 10 Hz and the amplitude decreases with the frequency increase. The analysis of visual observation and characteristic of film thickness indicate that two flooding mechanisms were identified at low and high liquid flow rate, respectively. At low liquid flow rate, the interfacial waves upward propagation is responsible for the formation of CCFL onset. While flooding at high liquid flow rate takes place as a direct consequence of the liquid bridging in tube due to the turbulent flow pattern. Moreover, it is believed that there is a transition region between the low and high liquid flow rate.

  • In the application of the RETRAN code to the analysis of very small LOCA one of main concerns is placed on use of the bubble rise model in the upper plenum, because the bubble rise model nay cause a numerical divergence problem and coefficients used to describe it are based on experimental results of large LOCA. In order to solve this problem, a method, which enables us to predict the mixture level in the upper plenum without use of the bubble rise model, was proposed. For this method the local void distribution in the core and upper plenum was derived by using a simplified slip model. It was shown that results predicted from the derived equation are in excellent agreement with experimental data. Additionally it was found that local void in the upper plenum has a uniform distribution unlike a linear distribution in large LOCA. Communication between the upper plenum and upper head was investigated. By introducing the concept of Taylor instability, it was proved that counter-current Hon between them is possible.

  • In the adjacent seas of Cheju Island, the oceanographic conditions show low salinity surface waters starting in May. This water flows from the southeast part of the China Coastal Water, which flows southeastward along the Great Yangtze Sand Bank until April, with the help of southeasterly winds and flows from the adjacent sea off Cheju Island. In May, the Tsushima Warm Current and the low salinity surface water fluctuate in short and long-term periods as influenced by Yellow Sea Cold Water, which flows to the bottom layer at the western entrance of Cheju Strait. Temperature and salinity fronts in the northeastern sea area of U Island are formed in the boundary area between the Tsushima Warm Current, which expands towards Cheju Island from the southeastern sea area of Cheju Island and Hows out from the eastern entrance of the strait. Seasonally, additional oceanographic conditions, such as coastal counter-currents, which flow southward, appears within limited areas in the adjacent eastern and western seas of Cheju Island.

  • For the purpose of optimizing the counter current extraction process for separation of [Sm] and [Pr, Nd] group in hydrochloric acid solution using Cyanex 572 as an extractant, the theory of Xu Guangxian was derived for calculating the optimized extraction factors. From the basic batch test result, the separation factor of [Sm]/[Pr, Nd] was 14.59 at pH 1.75 in extraction process and 14.61 at 0.01 M HCl in scrubbing process. The process parameters can be calculated using a theory of optimum extraction ratio. From the result of calculation, the total extraction and scrubbing stage numbers at counter current process were 11 and for maintain extraction ratio the flow rate ratio of feed solution, solvent solution, scrubbing solution was 6.25 : 1.74 : 5.80 using 0.1 M HCl.

  • Experimental investigations on the removal of protein, total suspended solids and turbidity from aquacultural water were carried out by using three types of foam separator: counter current air driven type foam separator (CCADFS), high speed aeration type foam separator (HSAFS) and venturi type foam separator (VFS). The decrease of flow rate by CCADFS, HSAFS and VFS were $0.4,\;66.1,\;77.2 {\%}$ respectively. Protein removal rates by three types foam separator were decreased with the increased hydraulic residence time (HRT). Bellw 0.32 minute and 0.21 minute of hydraulic residence times, protein removal rate of HSAFS and YES was higher than that of CCADFS, respectively. Protein removal rate of VFS was lower than that of HSAFS at any HRT. As increasing the HRT, protein removal efficiency of CCADFS was increased, but that of HSAFS and VES were decreased. The changes of removal rates and efficiencies of total suspended solid and turbidity were similar to proteins.

  • The paper presents the effect of operating temperatures and flow rates on the distillate flux that can be obtained from a hydrophobic membrane having the characteristics: pore size of 0.15 ㎛; thickness of 130 ㎛; and 85% porosity. That membrane in the present investigation could be the direct contact (DCMD) or the air-gap membrane distillation (AGMD). To model numerically the membrane distillation processes, the two-dimensional computational fluid dynamic (CFD) is used for the DCMD and AGMD cases here. In this work, DCMD and AGMD models have been validated with the experimental data using different flows (Parallel and Counter-current flows) in non-steady-state situations. A good agreement is obtained between the present results and those of the experimental data in the literature. The new approach in the present numerical modeling has allowed examining effects of the nature of materials (Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymers, copolymers, and blends) used on thermal properties. Moreover, the effect of the area surface of the membrane (0.021 to 3.15 ㎡) is investigated to explore both the laminar and the turbulent flow regimes. The obtained results found that copolymer P(VDF-TrFE) (80/20) is more effective than the other materials of membrane distillation (MD). The mass flux and thermal efficiency reach 193.5 (g/㎡s), and 83.29 % using turbulent flow and an effective area of 3.1 ㎡, respectively. The increase of feed inlet temperatures and its flow rate, with the reduction of cold temperatures and its flow rate are very effective for increasing distillate water flow in MD applications.

  • This article deals with the development of a mathematical model for the finishing polycarbonate polymerization process using a horizontal rotating disk-ring reactor with counter-current gas sweeping and the performance analysis of the reactor system by using the model. Here we intend to propose a model describing the reactor system consisting of two phases, in which by-product phenol is removed from the polymer of high molecular weight compatible with the products of commercial grades. The vapor phase is represented by a tanks-ln-series model while the polymer melt phase is regarded as a plug flow reactor.

  • At steady state, the simultaneous transport of sulphuric acid and nickel sulphate through an anion-exchange membrane Neosepta-AFN (Astom Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) was investigated in a two-compartment counter-current dialyzer with single passes. The transport was quantified by the recovery yield of acid, rejection of salt and four phenomenological coefficients, which were correlated with the acid and salt concentrations in the feed. The phenomenological coefficients were determined by the numerical integration of the basic differential equations describing the concentration profiles of the components in the dialyzer. This integration was combined with an optimizing procedure. The experiments proved that the acid recovery yield is in the limits from 63 to 91 %, while salt rejection is in the limits from 79 to 97 % in the dependence on the volumetric liquid flow rate and composition of the feed.

  • This study aims at improving work reliability. It proposes a way to overcome the limitations of current scheduling methods by providing a new framework, CPAM(Construction Process Analysis Model) based on the lean principles. It suggests methods which improve work reliability and production effectiveness with variability control methods. Also it suggests methods which reduce inventories of materials and equipment and WIP(Work In Process) using two techniques; Lookahead Schedule and Weekly Work Plan. The contribution of this research also includes that it assumes planning as a process of reducing uncertainty and maximizing throughput, counter-posing plan reliability to resource redundancy as alternative strategies for managing in conditions of uncertain work flow.
