  • Using Bacillus subtilis spore display system, with cotG as an anchoring motif, levansucrase from Zymomonas mobilis, was displayed on the outer surface of Bacillus subtilis spore. Flow cytometry of DB104 (pSDJH-cotG-levU) spore, proved the surface localization of CotG-LevU fusion protein on the spore compared to that of DB104. Enzymatic activity of DB104 (pSDJH-cotG-levU) spore showed more than 1.5 times higher levansucrase specific activity compared to that of the host spore, which is a remarkable increase of enzymatic activity considering the existence of sacA (sucrase) and sacB (levansucrase) in the Bacillus subtilis chromosome. The spore integrity, revealed by sporulation frequency test after heat and lysozyme treatment of spore, did not changed at all in spite of the CotG-LevU fusion protein incorporation into the spore coat layer during spore formation process. These data prove again that Bacillus subtilis spore could be considered as good live immobilization vehicle for efficient bioconversion process.

  • Ruthenium complex-catalyzed reactions often require highly qualified tuning of reaction conditions with substrates to attain high yield and selectivity of the products. In this review, our strategies for achieving characteristic ruthenium complex-catalyzed co-oligomerization of different alkenes are disclosed: 1) The codimerization of 2-norbornenes with acrylic compounds by new ruthenium catalyst systems of RuCl3(tpy)/Zn [tpy = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine] or [RuCl2(η6-C6H6)]2/Zn in alcohols, 2) A novel synthesis of 2-alkylidenetetrahydrofurans from dihydrofurans and acrylates by zerovalent ruthenium catalysts, such as Ru(η4-cod)(η6-cot) [cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene, cot = 1,3,5-cyclooctatriene] and Ru(η6-cot)(η2-dmfm)2 [dmfm = dimethyl fumarate], 3) Regio- and stereoselective synthesis of enamides by Ru(η6-cot)(η2-dmfm)2-catalyzed codimerization of N-vinylamides with alkenes, and 4) Unusual head-to-head dimerization of styrenes and linear codimerization of styrenes with ethylene by Ru(η6-cot)(η2-dmfm)2 catalyst in the presence of primary alcohols.

  • To get rid of cell assembly margin and have more process room of upper substrate, we developed truly COT (Color Filter On TFF Array) LCDs in that B/M (Black Matrix) as well as C/F (Color Filter) layer is located on TFT substrate. Novel B/M material is also developed for this COT structure. Difficulty in making contact hole through C/F layer was solved by making each C/F pattern isolated from others. We think this configuration will be core technology for prominent COT LCDs.

  • Background: Despite the existence of established guidelines advocating the use and value of chemotherapy order templates, chemotherapy orders are still handwritten in many hospitals in Lebanon. This manuscript describes the implementation of standardized chemotherapy order templates (COT) in a Lebanese tertiary teaching hospital through multiple steps. Initial Assessment: An initial assessment was conducted through a retrospective appraisal of completeness of handwritten chemotherapy orders for 100 adult patients to serve as a baseline for the project and identify parameters that might afford improvement. Choice of solution: Development of over 300 standardized pre-printed COTs based on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network templates and adapted to the practice culture and patient population. Implementation: The COTs were implemented, using Kotter's 8-step model for leading change, by engaging health care providers, and identifying and removing barriers. Evaluation: Assessment of physicians' compliance with the new practice (122 orders assessed) was completed through two phases and allowed for the identification of areas of improvement. Lessons Learned: Overall, COT implementation showed an average improvement in order completion from 49.5% (handwritten orders) to 77.6% (phase 1-COT) to 87.6% (phase 2-COT) reflecting an increase of 38.1% between baseline and phase 2 and demonstrating that chemotherapy orders completeness was improved by pre-printed COT. As many of the hospitals in Lebanon are moving towards standardized COTs and computerized physician order entry (CPOE) in the next few years, this study provides a prototype for the successful implementation of COT and demonstrates their role in promoting quality improvement of cancer care.

  • Visible channel calibration method using deep convective clouds (DCCs) is developed. The method has advantages that visible radiance is not sensitive to cloud optical thickness (COT) for deep convective clouds because visible radiance no longer increases when COT exceeds 100. Therefore, once DCCs are chosen appropriately, and then cloud optical properties can be assumed without operational ancillary data for the specification of cloud conditions in radiative transfer model. In this study, it is investigated whether IR measurements can be used for the selection of DCC targets. To construct appropriate threshold value for the selection of DCCs, the statistics of cloud optical properties are collected with MODIS measurements. When MODIS brightness temperature (TB) at 11 ${\mu}$ m is restricted to be less than 190 K, it is shown that more than 85% of selected pixels show COT ${\geq}$ 100. Moreover, effective radius ($r_e$) distribution shows a sharp peak around 20 ${\mu}m$. Based on those MODIS observations, cloud optical properties are assumed as COT = 200 and $r_e$ = 20 ${\mu}m$ for the simulation of MODIS visible (0.646 ${\mu}m$) band radiances over DCC targets.

  • In a conventional opportunistic transmit (COT) cooperative relaying system, only the relays that receive signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) from the source and that exceed the threshold transmit to the destination. The COT system, however, only considers the SNR of the source-relay (S-R) path regardless that the SNR of the relay-destination (R-D) path is the opportunistic transmission condition. For that reason, it is not guaranteed that all the transmitted signals from relays exceed the threshold at the destination. Therefore we propose a double opportunistic transmit (DOT) cooperative relaying system - when both of the received SNR from a source and from a destination exceed the threshold, the relay transmits to the destination. It is shown that the proposed DOT system reduces power consumption by 6.9, 20.9, 32.4, and 41.4 % for K =3, 5, 7, and 9, respectively under the given condition of $P_{out}=1{\times}10^{-3}$ and $\overline{\gamma}_{SR}/\Gamma_{SR}$=30 dB, compared to the COT system. We noticed that the performance of the DOT system is superior to that of the COT system for the identical number of active transmit relays under the same condition of the normalized average SNR of $\overline{\gamma}_{RD}/\Gamma_{RD}$.

  • Multiple output converters can be utilized when various output voltages are required in applications. Recently, one of the multiple output converters called fly-buck has been proposed, and has attracted attention due to the advantage that multiple output can be easily obtained with a simple structure. When constant on-time (COT) control is applied, the output ripple voltage must be treated carefully for control stability and voltage regulation characteristics in consideration of the inherent energy transfer characteristics of the fly-buck converter. This study analyzes the operation principle of the fly-buck converter with a ripple generation network and presents the design guideline for the improved output voltage regulation. Validity of the analysis and design guideline is verified using a 5 W prototype of the COT controlled fly-buck converter with a ripple generation network for telecommunication auxiliary power supply.

  • Application of newly conceptualized Anti-Splash Devices designed for COT vent pipes were studied on a P/V valve located on the upper deck of an oil carrier vessel. Anti-Splash devices are used in the shipbuilding industry in order to avoid oil overflow and spray accidents caused by excess pressure and vacuum condition in the cargo oil tanks. These conditions are caused by the transverse and longitudinal sloshing forces that arise from ship motion during sea voyages. The main issue with existing Anti-Splash device model is flux at the outlet of the Anti-Splash Device, and so, new conceptual models for the Anti-Splash device were developed and compared to existing Anti-Splash device model using CFD analysis. Transient analysis was used to capture the flow and velocity of each model and a comparative analysis was performed between old and new-concept models. This data was used to determine the optimal design parameters in order to develop an optimized Anti-Splash Device. A Factory acceptance test was performed on the new-concept models in order to verify the performance and efficiency against their design requirements and other criterion. The final step performed was to apply the optimized Anti-Splash Device models for COT vent pipes to an actual vessel and verify performance through a seawater cargo operation during a sea voyage as per the ship owner's request. The patent for the aforementioned device was obtained by the Korean Intellectual property Office dated Dec. 18th,2014.
