For the relationship between conformance cost and the individual elements of non-conformance, an analysis was made of the relationship between inspection cost and training cost and scrap cost. As a result it was explained that there was all a positive correlation between training cost and scrap cost, and between inspection cost and scrap cost. Like this, training and inspection cost and scrap cost have a positive correlation. Judging from the fact that the coefficient of inspection cost is lower than that of training cost in the comparison of the coefficient of each cost, it can be analyzed that the change in scrap cost is influenced by the change in training cost more greatly than the change in inspection cost. If doing so, it can be interpreted that scrap cost and rework cost do not still decrease in spite of increasing in education and training cost and prevention cost. This result may represent the problem as to whether education and training cost is effectively expended for prevention activity. Accordingly, to cope with this situation, it is thought that scrap cost should be cut by establishing the effective prevention measure for causing the increase of scrap cost.
The most important decision of process planning for the manufacturing system is the machine selection problem to minimize machining costs. Each machine has its own different machining performance indicating a different fraction of scrap, making the cost of scrap generated by machining is different for each machine. Therefore, when we decide on machine selection, we must consider the machining cost and the cost of scrap generated. This paper describes the statistical model for the fraction of scrap generated by machining and the machine selection algorithm considering the total cost including the machining cost and the cost of scrap generated.

Most of researches of tolerance optimization have used a simple sum of tolerance-cost functions with several constraint equations as an optimization model. However, if there is a machining sequence with more than one processes to complete a part, and machining failure, i.e., out-of-tolerance occurs at one of the intermediate processes, the tolerance-cost of this process should be added by the machining cost of all the previous processes already completed on the part. In this study, an accumulated scrap cost model(ASCM) is proposed considering the scrapped machining cost, and applied to a simple assembly example. The result of tolerance optimization using ASCM is compared with that of using a traditional optimization model to confirm its effectiveness.
The ship recycling or scrap is a phenomenon in the process of vessels life cycle has ended in the shipping industry. Scrap are greatly affected by freight rates due to ship demands. Not only that, environmental regulation and economic scale vessel demand are processes that must exist in the shipping industry as they obtain management for existing vessels. In the past, shipbreaking yard had tried to work without protection for poverty, without poor working conditions and facilities to prevent the emission of harmful substances. However, the issue of environmental pollution has been raised the Basel and Hong Kong Convention have been adopted, and a new replacement of the ship scrap that induces serious pollution is required. In this study, 165 countries were analyzed to confirm the importance of determining the ship solution. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the Environmental Performance Index, which is a measure of environmental regulation, is the most influential factor of ship scrapped volume. The determinant of whether lower labor cost can be secured is more correlated with population than GDP per capita. The implications of the results of the regression analysis mean that if environmental regulations for ship scrap of the future are strengthened, the status of Bangladesh and Pakistan, which currently account for half of the world's ship recycling, may change.

An optimal raw mix model in stainless steel making is developed. The key raw materials in stainless steel making are stainless steel scrap, steel scrap, and alloy materials like Fe-Ni, Fe-Cr. Among those raw materials, the alloy metals are very expensive as well as rapidly price-changing items. Consequently, it is very important to develop an minimal cost raw mix scheme while the produced stainless steel satisfies the required specification in it's composition. The linear programming model is employed to determine the minimal cost raw mix scheme. Compared with the method being used, the developed linear programming model gives much faster and better solution (lower cost raw mix plan). Together with the linear programming model, the database is also developed, which includes the following: 1) data for raw materials, such as compositions, costs, densities, available inventory levels, and so on, 2) the required specifications process. The developed optimal raw mix model will be implemented in VAX computer.
A type of titanium alloy, ferro-titanium, is the main material used to manufacture steel and stainless steel. Considering economic aspects, ferro-titanium ingots are intended to be manufactured using low-cost titanium scrap, and the best pretreatment process for removing impurities from recycled titanium scrap surfaces was studied here. Instead of ordinary acid or organic solvents, ecofriendly methods were researched and applied, and chip scrap materials were used. A high-quality ferro-titanium ingot was manufactured from titanium scrap after a pretreatment process was applied, and the impurities and properties were analyzed and compared with commercial material standards through a component analysis.

In 2005, the imports of titanium metals was about 22.8 million US$(7,700 tons) in Korea. New scrap produced was estimated to be 359 tons and the exports were about 352 tons. Generally scrap is recylced into titanium ingot either with or without virgin metal using traditional vacuum-arc-melting and cold hearth melting. In Korea, there is no titanium ingot producers(recyclers). In this paper, the brief summary of major titanium melting technology, such as vacuum arc remelting(VAR), electron beam melting(EBM), plasma arc melting(PAM) is given and discussed. In view of titanium market situation of Korea, the technological development of ingot production from scrap is big problem to be solved in order to realize extensive cost reduction for titanium products.

This paper presents a model that considers combinations of rework, repair, replacement and scrapping. Policy-Iteration method of inspection is proposed for a serial manufacturing system whose repair cost, scrap cost and inspection cost. when it fails, can be formulated by Markovian approach. Policy-Iteration stops when new inspection policy is the same as previous inspection policy. A numerial example is presented.
The steel industry, as the national representative strategic industry of our country, has played the motive power for the economic growth of Korea in 1970s as the positive support of the government and the management endeavor of the private were harmonized. However, in case of our country, we have mostly relied on import of the raw materials for the steel industry, and as the weight of the imported raw materials is heavy, the steel industry is the industry whose transport burden is big as it is called 'transport industry'. So, the transport rationalization will be the important task of the steel industry. This study has analyzed the economic efficiency per the transport route (container ship vs bulk ship) of the sea transport related to import/export of the steel scrap on the level acquiring the stable supply of the steel scrap. For this, this study firstly researched the status of domestic/foreign steel industry. And analyzed the world crude steel production volume, steel scrap consumption volume and world steel scrap trading structure. Also, in order to compare the transport logistics expenses between two transport devices, namely, container ship and bulk ship, this study calculated the logistics expenses per ton by using the traffic hours and traffic expenses items as the imported/exported scrap freights of 'D' company.
In spite of low energy requirement, and operation and construction cost, biofilters with soil beds have not been operated efficiently. Because of excess moisture in winter and rainy periods, saturated pores in the bed prevent passage and sorption of odorous compounds. Sometimes this results in septic conditions that release previously sorbed and oxidized sulfur. Therefore, an economical and effective alternative needs to be developed. The objectives of this study were to confirm applicability of the granular scrap tires with compost for treating odorous gas as well as to obtain optimum design parameters for proposed system. In lab-scaled test, multiple stage reactors had lower headloss than a single stage reactor and less headloss was occurred for the gas with higher moisture content. For practical purpose, pilot-scaled reactor was operated to remove odor from septic tank, manure and animal wastewater treatment plant and composting machine. According to the results of pilot scaled test, $H_2S$ can be always removed completely and ammonia/amine can be removed excellently when proper moisture content is provided. The results from lab and pilot test showed that granular scrap tire could be replaced with soil as supporting material for biofilter showed excellent drainage because of its ability to reject moisture.
